When I had my debit card refused at Costco a couple of years ago I phoned India Abbey. I failed the security check cos I couldn't recall the last transactions on my account, even though I could tell him how much I was paid each week, when it was paid in & who paid me and then the tw@ put the phone down on me!!!!  >:( >:( >:( >:(. I moved my mortgage from them years ago to Bradford & Bingley  :-? only for Santander to buy them too.
Every time I need to phone them I come off the phone swearing that I'll move banks but ....... that's as far as I get.  ::)

I have every sympathy with you TB!

I have been there, done that, worn the t-shirt with Santander, and Abbey previously! ::) ::) ::)

They are useless, robbing (if you let then) blighters, and I no longer use them as my main bank >:( >:( >:( >:(.   Just use them now to pay my DD's!! :D :D :D :D ;)  They do all the work for nothing! :y

Useless rather breakwits.

They claim to have no record of the transaction, but can see a declined transaction for that amount on their system...   ...now I know I'm not that bright, but how can they see it on their system, yet deny that the transaction was attempted  :-?

Their answer is because it worked earlier in the day, it MUST be a fault with the shop....  ....my reply about it reached their system, because they can see it (and the fact the clearing house confirmed it was a refusal) falls on deaf ears.

More worryingly is the £505 that I know nothing about, which they aren't concerned about...

That's the situation I ended up in. The bank said it was Costco, Costco said it was the bank or my card.
I dug my heels in in the end & managed to buy what I'd wanted.  :y :y

Complain to the bitter end and get compensation from the bank! Every tome a financial institution cocks up your entitled, take it to the ombudsman if you have to. Usually they (the bank) are so disorganised you win by default as they can't prove their case or fail to respond at all.

If my better half doesnt use her barclay card for a week the next transaction gets refused every time (but only on one account, never the other one).
I have never told them I am going away overseas and when I use it in afgan I can log transaction in 3 countries (Holland USA and afgan) in  less than an hour and they never question it.

They should be able to advise why the transaction has been declined in most cases unless the card payment system you are making the payment with is fubar, which happens sometimes and shows the payment declined because it can't communicate with the host bank and the attempt cannot be seen.
I hope that makes sense :y

I should point out, I don't bank with Santander. I'm not that daft.

I do, however, have an Asda credit card (for the 1ppl off fuel (was 2p when I took it out :()), which is run by Santander.

I bank with NatWest, who have been absolutely fantastic to me for the past 20yrs, I cannot fault them.

Got to the bottom of most of the issue now. After losing my rag with 3 offshored idiots who clearly do not understand how UK clearing houses work (or the fact they exist), or how their own systems work. Tosspots.

It is a sad state of affairs that after 90mins of them stonewalling me, insisting it was a fault with the retailer's till (remember, Santander could see the transaction, but we went in this endless line of because the card wasn't blocked, and there was still credit, it must have been the shop), I had to be very blunt, honest, and sadly rude, before they would put me through to somebody in the UK who could fine out why it failed.

All of Santander Credit Card processing system went down for about 50mins, so was declining everything.

Now why the hell they couldn't tell their offshored call centre that is beyond me, as it meant I spent 90mins on the phone, listening to a pack of lies/BS, and told such stupid things (more than once) of trying to make the purchase again tomorrow.

rather retarded useless breakwits, employing India's most stupid of people.

I think I've got to the bottom of the $505.16 (declined transaction), but their is a potential issue with the times, so just awaiting to hear back from the retailer.

BTW, I support the card processing system for a major credit card company, so have a pretty good overview of how the system works  :-X

I bank with Natwest & have found them helpful & pleasant on the phone or in the branch. One down south run unexpectedly changed from runnung home empty from Thurrock to a reload in Swindon the next morning & i did'nt have enough diesel. (we don't have cards) I went to a garage & tried to draw cash from one of those awful independant machines which promptly swallowed my switchcard. This was friday & on phonong the no. was told an engineer could be out by tuesday! >:( When i protested i was told it was'nt thier problem! >:( >:( >:( So there i was in Thurrock with 1/4 tank of denzil, a few quid in cash & no card. I phoned Natwest & explained the situation. They phoned me back after organising for me to go to the basildon (i think ) branch where i would be given cash over the counter. I dropped the trailer & bobtailed to said branch & whilst looking for somewhere to park the unit without getting ticket, saw a lovely lady parking warden who once i'd explained allowed me to park in a disabled/loading bay, would keep an eye & radio her colleagues. Once in the branch i was called into a room from the back of the queue (i stood out from the middle class ladies who do lunch) showed id & was given a £300 counter payment. On leaving i saw a florist & bought the lady traffic warden a red rose 'cos i'm a big tart but with a kiss on the cheek & a thankyou it made her day, she went redder than the rose!!
Sorry for waffling on but the moral is:- Why is there such a huge void between some folk being so bloody difficult & obnoxious to others being generally pleasant & helpful? Guy. :y

Probably made a welcome change from the abuse she usually gets from ignorant folk who are too bone idle to park legally & walk to the shops mate.
Some idiots think thier journey is more important than everyone elses. ::)
