I have (jokingly!!) remarked on the MV6 Criminal thread about it doesn't matter about a pre-facelift miggy being chucked around, with tyres burning, as it is a pre-facelift that might as well be used for a bit of fun in it's last year(s) (STILL joking!!!! pre-facelift owners!! :P :P :P ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D)
Anyway it got me thinking (for a change!) would you race a treasured classic, using it for its intended purpose as a car, but adding a rallying or racing element?
If you owned a Lotus Carton, a Sierra Cosworth, a Lotus Cortina (of any Mk), a 1968 Mustang, a Aston Martin DB5...........etc, and I think you have the flavour of my thoughts........would you race it; would you enter rallies, or would you burn rubber with it. Or would you keep it wrapped in cotton wool as a museum piece?
To open up on this myself, I would love to race a classic (assumming I had the money to do so) like the Mustang around a race track so would do so and risk a few dents!! ::) ::) 8-)

I would, however, definitely drive it on the public roads - I wouldn't keep it wrapped up in the garage (I know at least one person who does that and I just can't figure it out, definitely not for me!).

I think that is the key! ;D I imagine if I had pots and pots of cash, I'd feel very differently about it.. :)

Race a Classic?
I used to go along to the Coy's festival. Plenty of classics racing there. Ferrari 250GTO anyone? How much are they worth? It was about 3 or 4 million in those days and there were several of them bumper to bumper on one occasion, along with many other priceless cars that make a Lotus Carlton look like demolition derby fodder.
I saw a Mustang punt a 60's Ferrari off the starting grid on one occasion when one the Ferrari missed a gear. Both cars stoved to bu66ery. Drivers just got out and had a laugh about it.
Then again, what did you say about "pots and pots of cash"? The programme read like a music industry "all time greats" list.

Nick mason has a rather nice collection, and races most of them. He even lets other people race them. But then he does have more money than he could ever count so......
I would sell several organs for a drive in his ex Gilles Villenueve F1 Ferrari. :)
In the posh houses across the road from me, the one opposite has a gorgeous mK1 big arched RS1600 which he rallies and the bloke 2 doors from him races a beautiful Mk1 Lotus Cortina.

No offence anyone but these threads usually "decline" into the hugely expensive cars, Ferraris, Mustangs, Lotus Cortinas & Mk1/2 Escorts which are out of reach to most if not all of us. I'll add the original Mini Cooper S to said list as like the Lotus Cortina it was a giant killer.
On a more down to earth note being the classic Ford fan you all know i am i could shoot myself for some of the old fords i've killed on the oval raceway @ Angmering many years ago. They were just old motors at the time.

Many brilliant examples and takes me right back to frequently travelling in my future father-in-laws Westminster. They were, or are, beautiful cars and had all the top of the range features of a 1960s luxury car.
This one particularly caught my eye Guy, as it appears to have A40 Mk1 headlight and indicator chrome trim:

Would rather see these classic 'used' than sat in a garage gathering dust......And when they're finished with get them raced....We have a stockpile of classic inc MK1 granada coupe, MK2 Triumph 2000, XJS, XJ6 Alegro, minors etc and these are all waiting to be raced!!!!
Have just seen a westie that sold for £2000 and has been bought to be banger raced..which is a little bit excessive!!!

I would love to, but the cash required would be crazy. One of my highlights is watching the legends race at Brands.
After a few laps all the cars started getting too hot and locking up ...... At Druids a mini Cooper S was nearly taken out by a TR4 locking up and sliding straight towards him. I was close enough to see both drivers eyes (both were crapping themselves) and the gasps for breath from the crowd as it slid ever closer.
About 2" away (and nothing more than that) it stopped and they went around for another lap, the whole crowd cheered. You could see the drivers relief and how much they loved it :y
That mini though was spanking pretty much every exotic from the era right through to 80s stuff in the bends, but obviously lost on the straights.

I owned a couple of plastic pigs way back in the seventies ...A 600cc Regal....and the later 700cc Regal Supervan....which went like sh*t of a shovel....
Needless to say...... being only 17or 18 at the time ...I rolled the pair of them....Happy days.... ;D ;D ;)

For the rest of us how about one for oof members possibly under class e.g 2.5/2.6 and 2.0 and racing against a clock? also makin g it day out with other events around it.
Possibly insurance needs to be considered etc.

Understood Martin but as relative youngsters we did'nt understand that back then. Anyone whose done it will understand Banger racing is like scrapping with cars. To observe we're not going very fast & ooh he hit him & ooh he span out etc. When your'e in the car everything is magnified & the adreniline rush is unbelievable & addictive. I used to be dissapointed if i did a meet & had'nt rolled, it's the original exteme sport. Try as i might i could never put into words the buzz you get, from days before each meet to days after.
I'm older & calmer now & the 1966 Cortina est. will never meet such a demise. She'll be polished, shown & pampered.
PS, most of the cars we raced would've gone to the crusher if we had'nt raced 'em, at least they went out in style, Guy. :y

I do know how the Sunbeam's shift. A friend used to have a horrible old brown thing that was covered in rust and was generally falling apart..... He used to leave modern cars standing! No idea what tweaking he had done.

It was easy to get the 1600 up to about 120mph / bhp or use a Lotus slant 4 at 150 to 200 bhp

I sold one for the same I paid for the 1600.
Firepump engine
The 1600 was the Avenger short stroke lump and was extremely tunable I used to know of two. Avenger at over 200 at rear wheels and Sunbeam at rough 160 at crank drag racer and circuit racer.
