last night, an interesting piece from Paul Hudson on Look North.
During the coldest day in the recent cold snap (coldest on record for Yorkshire)
26,000 MW coal
23,000 MW gas
20 MW wind
(MW being Mega Watts or millions of watts)
We at Drax already are producing >500MW from renewable fuel. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, no mater what the weather and yet we are still be bad guys???
Tree hugers and nut munchers, do some research!!!
-
they were told it was ill advised. but still they plough on..
-
and when it was at its coldest, it was too cold for the wind turbines to produce power. So cold infact, that the turbines needed heating ..... from the grid! :-? :-? :-?
-
Trouble is, the majority of these tree huggers are so single minded, they just cant see the wood for the tree's.
They just see a massive fan turning in the breeze and think it's saving the world. They dont understand how much energy is used to design, develop, test, re-design, re-develop, build, re-build, buy land which was most likely farm-land, build, re-build, off-hire that JCB which wont be needed because the weather isn't right, re-hire the JCB because there is a break in the weather, erect the turbine, plumb it into the mains, use the 4x4 to get to the turbine once again to check if it is on, stay there for a couple of days with thousands of pounds worth of testing equipment to see if it is generating power, plug in a light bulb and call the local village across to applaud and celebrate when the bulb eventually glows before finally stopping the turbine because the weather is blowing a gale........ WIND TURBINES ARE UNSAFE IN A GALE! LOLZ> :-X

Yes, rather unfortunate that in the Winter; stable, cold, high pressure air in the U.K, means little or no wind to generate from......we are a nation a`top mountains of high quality coal reserves and a`float on wave-tossed seas, with some of the greatest tidal ranges in the world and we choose ignore clean-burn coal, wave and tidal generating sources, rather instead to back the (seemingly, three-legged) wind 'horse'. ::)
Politicians have their 'vision'......yet, they`re the most short-sighted and tunnel-visioned people alive. :(

you're not a fan then? ::) (no pun intended ;D ;D ;D)

Apart from being hopelessly inefficient in power output, windfarms also consume electricity:

:o I shouldn`t have read that.....I`m now angry; what a con! >:(

Ah, don't be angry, Debs.
We have many windfarms planned...unlike elsewhere:
- EVONIK, Walsum (Duisburg), 800 MW black coal (2010)
- RWE, Neurath (Cologne), 2 x 800 MW lignite (2009)
- RWE Westfalen (Dortmund-Hamm, 2 x 800 MW black coal (2011)
- EON Datteln (Dortmund), 1 x 1100 MW (!) black coal (2011)
- ENBW Karlsruhe, 1 x 800 MW black coal (2011)
- Trianel (municipality) Lünen, 1 x 800 MW black coal (2011)
- Vattenfall Moorburg (Hamburg), 2 x 800 MW black coal (2011)
- Vattenfall Boxberg (close to Leipzig), 1 x 800 MW lignite (2011)
The dates in brackets are the completion dates of the boilers (hydraulic testing and first fire).
In mainland Europe the German utilities are building the following units
- EON, Maasvlakte (Rotterdam), 1 x 1100 MW black coal
- RWE Eemshaven (NL), 2 x 800 MW black coal.
That is over 11 GW, coming on-stream this year or next, while we are doing our best to close down our coal plants. The bizarre thing though is that these are high efficiency plants, with a conversion factor of 45 percent, compared to British coal sets which deliver about 38 percent.
Replacing our current coal capacity with high efficiency sets would, therefore, save vastly more "carbon" than the savings that the entire wind estate – current and planned – will deliver.
Shamelessly stolen from elsewhere http://eureferendum.blogspot.com/2011/01/getting-there.html
So, don't be angry. Be incandescent!! ;)

I think there is no doubt that it’s all but impossible to make a sensible case for the widespread installation of wind powered generating sets.
Furthermore, I think there has been enough hand-wringing, brow furrowing concern demonstrated by the sagacious elite determined to salve their sullied environmental consciousness’ by dreaming up hair-brained schemes while expecting the rest of us to either pay through the nose or substantially alter our lifestyle to enable those tortured dreams to become reality.
This country is on the road to hell on an environmentally 'correct' handcart.

Sadly true, Zoo-Lou. :( :'(

I want Nuclear!

I want Nuclear!
:P Nuke`em, Bubba! ;D

What we really need is an Engineer deciding energy policy, not a career politician. They simply don't have the knowledge required to do the job (or perhaps any useful job).

They wont be going with wavepower then!

I hate Wind Farms, they look awful, ruin the countryside, kill wild life, devalue homes and cause a number of physical and psychological health issues....
I would rather A nuclear power plant next door than have a wind farm 10 miles from me... Sadly, I have a number of Wind farms within 10 miles of me and I still hate them with a passion.... Oh, did I say that the energy they produce costs the most money to produce it and that they are hugely inefficient????
