Title: just ordered an iphone 4
Post by: feeutfo on 02 January 2011, 18:26:47
on 02 business plan.
16gb iphone 4 for 117+ vat.

24 months, with upgrade after 12.
300 anytime/network mins.
500gb of data(easily increased with a bolt on any time)
unlimited texts and other 02 calls.
£29 a month.

Seems almost reasonable ?    :-/

So do I, and, better still, it doesn't exist so I don't have to try to use it. :P

I'm quite happy with my iphone4.  As you know, I drive up and down the country, overnight stops, trains etc etc and I find the ipod part very usefull.

Plug the phone into the car (later RR's have a docking connection to allow full car screen functionality) as well as call menu use etc.  Others are just a jack type plug in but still workable.

Call functionality is ample for what I need (thus far anyway) and I like the web/wifi connectivity.  Got the software to upload DVD's to it and thus able to watch films etc when stuck on a train for several hours.

Nope, reasonably happy with it as a device.   :y

Plus, being serious for a minute. I can finally get a decent sat nav app on a hand set.

Is tomtom still the one to have?

I bought nDrive, it was only a fiver!  :o

But due to legal issues thats no longer available, TomTom has come down quite a bit now, tempted to upgrade as nDrive is a bit flaky.

Belive his double gayness uses co-pilot

I use a seperate TT for navigating as it has various other databases on it that I also use but have a freebie on the phone as a backup.  Navfree UK and Ireland.

And no, its not just the speed camera databases....   ;)   ;D

I have Navfree as a backup too... Seems reasonable, although I wouldn't recommend it as a first choice as it's a bit "clunky" in operation ::)

Would the iPhone 3GS be of use? Cheaper, basically the same as the 4. Slightly lesser screen and camera. :-?

But what ever happens don't get an n900....

....actually, got one here going cheap in a couple of days.   ;D

I actually prefer the 3G-S, the 4 is just not as nice in the hand as 3G. With OS 4.0 on it as well, 4G was not offering much more except a slightly better camera and a faster chip.

Think I will wait for the 5G and blag one get one from work

Had both handsets together over Xmas. Every other bugger has one of some sort except me, but I found the 3GS and 4 side by side, far better screen and battery life on the 4 and I am absolutely certain I will be less likely to drop the 4 with its squarer edges.

Actually I found my 3G easier to hold on to with it's plastic back, where the 4 was forever sliding out of my hand (until I fitted a bumper)..

I think I might order one of these for it, though:

Very nice, the scene in the top pic killed my n900, magnet holding the kick stand at the back picked up a load of swarf, then the magnet came unstuck and slid across the back of the phone. Now it can't see the memory card, the sim failed, and a new sim reveals lost voice mail, fubar touch screen, and more failed calls than conections.

Still, couple of days and nice new iPhone.

Cases ain't cheap generally though are they...?

The 'bumpers' are pretty cheap - at the moment I have that and a gelaskin (from http://www.gelaskins.com) on the back with a transparent screen protector.. I rather like the gelaskins as they add no depth to the phone, but make it much easier to hold on to and impossible to scratch (well, almost!)

Those Vapor cases definitely are't cheap, though (actually they're hideously expensive bits of machined metal .. much like the phone  ;D )

Yeah I thought so. Best I could find, bro in law mentioned the business plan on 02 and I never thought for one minute a business plan tariff would be cheaper. WRONGGGGGG !

Only slight complaint is it's 24 months, but the upgrade after 12 months helps there. Had to be on 02 no matter what.

Now who can think of a really really good way to destroy an n900. Thinking along the lines of microwave/heat gun/oxy tourch/or something air bag related! ..... Wonder if it will fit in a clay pigeon shoot.       PULL..... ;D

:-/ Hadn't heard of that. My HTC Desire has not had any issue there, although I've only had it just over a month.
Any reported issues may have been a case of 'P.I.C.N.I.C'  ;D

Nah - if it was user error they'd have closed the bug report (that's been open since June last year I think it said) long ago ;) Also the screenshot in that article seems to show the problem - one name at the top of the screen and another in the message details popup..

As phones become more complicated, they'll have more bugs .. such is the nature of computers.

Had a go on me Mums HTC desire phone today. Bit random I thought, why does it need 3 different home screens accessed 3 different ways  :-? Or is it the way its set up? Very easy to press something wrong and it's away all on it's own and won't stop til it's finished. Most annoying!

Be careful going that on 3g - you'll get near you're 'unlimited' data quota ;)

If you have a MCE, look into Remote Potato - iPhone app out soon, I've been lucky enough to Beta test it. Will stream anything from MCE. To watch live TV, though, you have to tell Remote Potato to record it, then you can immediately start streaming it

I have SatFree UK, which works OK, once you get to understand the interface.  I also have TomTom Western Europe, which most will be familiar with once they get to know the iPhone's different layout. Then I had to get iGo, as that was the only one to cover Cyprus when I went in the summer.

Mrs TB has CoPilot, because that was the cheapest at the time.

All are much of a muchness, once you've learnt their interfaces...

Battery life, speed and screen (in that order) are enough to make the 4 a better phone than 3gs for me...

PULL..... ;D
Microwave is no fun, dies too quickly. Apparently ::)

Testing their susceptibility to ESD is always satisfying...

as is "What if the battery put out a few too many volts?"  ::)

Did it spend a ruh-heeeeleay long time backing it up, by any chance?  If so, no ;) (Mine did that the other day - hard reboot of the iPad, delete the backup file in iTunes and sync & backup again and it's back up to speed)

But yeah, all the same as the iPhone

iTunes is the weak part of the whole gayPhone/Pod/Pad setup. iTunes really is the work of Satan, and crApple should be castrated for managing to turn that buggy, useless, crapy piece of software into something even more buggy, useless and crappy.  And talk about bloated.

Needless to say, I try to avoid gayTunes as much as possible, and think the retard Jobs should be made to eat glass shards until he gets his company to fix the heap of shite.

I'm sure many a Mac owner has said this to you, TB, but iTunes on the Mac is nothing like iTunes on Windows - it's really quite decent on the Mac (has never crashed on me, doesn't seem to eat resources, and so on)..

Mobile phones are inanimate therefore cannot be stupid (or sensible, come to that!) But their erstwile owners can! :)

For some, a mobile phone is a lifeline but to others, nothing more than a fashion accessory.

If you are able to survive using Posty Pat, your PC for e-mail and your home landline and vanishing public call boxes, good on you.  I know I couldn't.....   :-[

Yeah your right it is. I'd increased the text size in settings and with more than one recipient added the keyboard then covered the plus sign. It wont take the number of recpients i want to send to afaict but its better than nout so far. I'll have a play at some point.

I don't have a social life ( I prefer it that way ), so I have a phone I can do stuff on!

Totally with you there though! Have you ever noticed when you're stood in a queue, people will get their mobiles out and fiddle with them just to give themselves something to do? Weird.

"My ringtone is louder and more whackier than yours!" They must think when their stupid bloody ringtone irritates our ear drums.

Little Johnny on the bus talking to his mam on his mobile about what he's having for tea! Eh? What did little Johnny do thirty years ago when we didn't have mobiles, especially 10 yo lads who earned, err, nothing!!

Hang on, I haven't been on a bus in years

Mine just rings, old fashioned ring ring. :)

Some observations so far. Browser is disappointing. But only from what I am used to. N900 browser was far easier to read. Why is the text so small on safari mobile?

Still miles ahead of the bug riddled maemo effort though.

Yep... But I've got good eyes so not really an issue... Plus zoom is easy to use :y Biggest issue I have (and it may just be me being thick!) is that if quoting text I can't get the cursor to the end of the text box :-?

Yes that is annoying, or I'm being thick as well. Or is it more that the box does not centre on the relevant area where the cursrer is? For instance on this page, quoted, reply page appears but the box is so small I have to zoom in, then two finger drag the text up to reveal the end of the conversation. Sometimes the cursor is in the fight place, if it's a lot of text it isn't.

I wondered about visiting the reply page on windows and dragging to box size to maximum, or at least bigger as suits, then leave it like so. Then, on my n95, the reply box used to appear much bigger. So more of the text would be visible, depending on what size the box was left.

Needles to say only windows browser seems to have the drag box size option.

Its not ideal, esp on long quotes, but I don't find it a massive problem TBH.  Its more of an issue in landscape and on a slow connection, then the screen estate is virtually fully taken up with keyboard and progress bar....

:P  in the grand scheme of things it's no biggy, but if memo browser was bug free it would be better.... But it isn't bug free, so that's that.

Increase text size is available for other functions, like mail, text, calendar and notes iirc. Maybe in v4.3.

I'll avoid quoting the biggest quote in existence ..

I find the text is very small - but much more readable than the 3G I had previously thanks to the screen.. But generally when I actually want to read a post I'll double-tap in the post area and let Safari auto-zoom in to the current 'cell' of the page..

Or I'll just pinch-zoom and then swipe around to read stuff, but usually double-tapping in landscape gets me the view I need.

Be thankful it's not a Blackberry - can't read a thing on that, and zoom is a case of Menu->scroll a bit->select zoom->press button a few times->scroll around..

Be thankful it's not a Blackberry - can't read a thing on that, and zoom is a case of Menu->scroll a bit->select zoom->press button a few times->scroll around..

;D ;D ;D You have too much time on your hands! :P

My favourite is when you have a quote like this, and people write their responses in the wrong place so you have to try and figure out where the new bit is.. (Granted I usually give up and go read something else at that point  ;D )
