Title: A very BIG Diesel.....
Post by: Debs. on 16 January 2011, 22:07:44
.....the EMD V20-710: 5,000 Bhp (3.7 MW.), displacing 11.63 litres (710 cu/in) in each of it`s 20 cylinders.

Used for power generation and in railway locomotives

Here`s one air-starting and running at load; what a  great sounding engine!

A mere toy compared to the latest version of the old English Electric lump

Now labeled MAN 28/33D basically a Ruston RK280

12,000 bhp from a V20

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Bc5XOZFZp4

And regardless of where it is now made a British design

If its got 20 cylinders and its a 4 stroke does that mean 5 cylinders going Bang at any one time? [smiley=shocked.gif]

For BIG, check out Wartsila-Sulzers ship engines. My favourite big engines include RR Merlin, the Napier Deltic engine, any Scania V8 and the Detroit Diesels, which I think sound fantastic!

But lets not forget the tiddlers too, lol

Nice looking piece of engineering with a compelling sound - no doubt. 8-) :y

I watched the worlds biggest diesel engine on tv last week. It is a South Korean job and is fitted to the worlds largest container ship. A massive piece of kit weighing 400 tons or thereabouts.

Hi Eddie,
The EMD V20`s are 2 stroke diesels (like the 'Detroit`s'). :y

You will struggle to find anything in common between the latest offerings and the EE's (thankfuly)

Started as the English Electric 6K shunter engine 10" bore 12" stroke, over the years grew more cylinders, turbo chargers, charge cooling, 4 valves up to mid 80s then they started boring and stroking now 280mm bore I think.

First was S6 300bhp
V16 1600bhp as 2 valve turbocharged
2000 as 4 valve
2700 as charge cooled
3250 as used more modern materials
3300 V12  with more tuning
S8 at over 3000 with the first overbore (RK270)
Next 280mm bore looking at over 9000 from a V16

Unfortunately the RK280 is no longer made here and has adopted a different name :( :(

The basic engine has been in about 2500 locos in the UK alone. Plus many in Portugal ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/dwbphotos/5273483905/ ), Australasia, South America, many in Africa, a few in Holland ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/peteredin/4225589124/ http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=194273 ) and France ( http://www.therailwaycentre.com/NewSite%20POD%202010/POD29-03-10.jpg  http://www.flickr.com/photos/adogriff/5242125612/ )

Same family, just advance upon advance.

And nothing wrong with the old EE lumps, very reliable quite a few 50 year old ones still running

Yes, advance on advance on advance until nothing left.....which is the case here.

Not even the basic engine config exists

As for the EE lumps, the biggest issue is poor combustion chamber design and the need to run silly low compression ratios in order to get the boost up to deliver the powers and remain competitive.

Hence why they smoke when cold, are a swine to start sometimes whcih is more evident on the higher power ones.

The chain driven cams are an absolute git as well, we have a 20 which is in desperate need of the slack adjusting on the cams (which is having an impact on running) but, there such a swine to get at it keeps getting put off!

I cant find the links at the mo Lizzie for the Deltics but there are some good ones out there of Deltics "working", what a sound!

Would love one of those mini V12s mounted on a table in the front room lol! Would also think the mini V12 would smell good too when running lol

 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D, and I would love a full sized Napier engine in my garage!   I'd start it regularly every Sunday morning at 0900; well I would say 0800, but that would be unsocial! ::) ::) ;D ;D ;D ;D ;)

I had the pleasure of a little trip on a c55 (in the cab) and a tour around the internals whilst it was on shed (but still running) at ELR last year.

Very interesting but not even room to swing a cat!

And a total loss oil system so if you have your head out the window and they throttle back, get it in quick!
