I'm getting a strong urge to buy a 911 :-/
It's a Beetle Del.... ;)......but a nice Ferrari perhaps.... :y :y :y
-
Not a fan of them, but would have to be a wide bodied turbo with a picnic table attached to the boot if I did get one.
-
depends, do you want a new one or a 90s one?
-
I'm getting a strong urge to buy a 911 :-/
:)I would love an early 70s 911 ,before they started to get a bit silly
-
New one 06 or later (997), but then again, I've been thinking, quick diesels are the way forward :)
-
I think this is a pretty little car. 8-) :-* :-* :y

You need to buy an earlier car, far nicer looking car, although technically they might not be as good. If they're good enough for James May ..... ;)
They still seem to fetch decent money though.

I like them because they are so ........ in your face. ;) :y
-
If it is accompanied by having your teeth whitened, visits to the gym, expensive jeans and some trendy new hairstyle then yes, you're having a major mid-life crisis. ;D

993 Turbo, for me - the last of the air cooled 911s. Unfortunately they tend to cost more than a much later model for just that reason; they're the one everyone wants.
Then again, after having a passenger ride in a friends 997.5 with the PDK gearbox around Anglesey circuit I could be persuaded by a newer model .. I have never been in such a competent all-round car. Faster cars, maybe, but not ones that will let you cruise 500 miles on the motorway in perfect comfort, then go 11/10ths around a race track, and cruise home again.

Yes, that together with the heritage, design ethic and build quality are, for me, all part of the allure of these cars.
I'm not particularly interested in sports' cars as such but the elegance and purposeful nature of the less flamboyant versions of the 911 (no spoiler or wide body to conceal oversize wheels) epitomise understated style, and as such I would gladly own and drive one. (Probably never using the full potential of its performance, except when overtaking)

can I have the 19 yr old mistress?
A 911 would be cheaper to run I would imagine. ;D :y

and it wouldnt need the bodywork refurbished every year ;)

Ah so you want to join the weekend warriors then eh ;D ;D
Sorry but I go Monday to Saturday and dont see a single porsche and then Sunday comes and they are everywhere.
Sorry but not my choice, if you want something that really commands respect then buy an Aston. :y

Brother in law has a 25 year old 911, which had a £12,000 bare metal respray/ restoration about 10 years ago. Its an absolutely cracking car. Even by todays standards, it is seriously quick, and the sound of the aircooled flat six at full chat is spine tingling. :y
Not keen on the interior though. :-/
They have always been the practical supercar. Reasonably good MPG, ultra reliable, even in the days when Italian supercars couldnt go more than 10 miles without falling apart. And have always been untemperamental to drive in town/ heavy traffic etc.

sweet :y
i read an article last year about a guy buying a beautiful 3 yr old 911 for 25k, running it a year and selling it for.......25k - only cost him fuel as the car was fully taxed and had new tyres when bought - cheaper to run in effect than almost anything on the road because of the glacial depreciation :y
now if i only had 25k spare :-/

god please dont mate. its just an expensive beatle.
if youre getting on a bit (dont know yout age) get a beautifully refined (and fast enough) jaguar such as this.....

Hardly in the same league as far as the driving experience goes, surely? (not to mention the "not turning rapidly into a pile of flaky brown dust" experience).

youre probably right mate.... but if youre getting on a bit wud u prefer a car that cocoons you in luxury or a car u have to be squuezed into.

I missed a vital part of the specification there. ;)
Hmm. Perhaps something with a less reclined driving position. A Cayenne instead? They must be useful for something other than blocking roads on the school run. ;D

Isn't that BMWs? Oops! There I go again! Sorry, Del. :-X

I think any version of the 911 is highly desirable, save for the ridiculous late 80's turbos - I think they look laughable.
I didnt understand the swoonery that goes on in most car circles concerning 911's, until, by chance and within 6 months of each other, I had the opportunity to drive (properly drive, not just sit in it and steer it along a bit) a Cayman, then a 996. The Cayman is a totally brilliant 'budget' 911, which I immediately felt at home in, and felt I could hustle it along way beyond my personal bravery limit. The 996 was just awesome - brilliantly engineered, ergonomically excellent, fabulously tractable, and again, I felt immediately at home.
I want one! Boy, do I want one!!
(Er, am I having a mid-life crisis too?? :-X
-
thing is the stuff we hear on top gear re handling is generally pointless. they have their own track and i will prob only go on a track once if not no times at all.
so in the real world we want straight line speed.
the jag i suggested is still a 0-60 in 4.5 seconds which is rapid enough.
imho :)
-
With you on the desirability of the Jag, Webby - I intend to buy an earlier model XJR late in 2012 8-) I have some reasonably serious dosh coming to me then, and they're just so bloody tempting, aren't they? £12K buys a mint '98 / '99 / '00 with full Jag s/h and low miles....£12K gets you the very best, and £6K / £7K buys something presentable and usable on an earlier plate. Fabulous car, seriously desirable, very reliable if well-bought - in terms of bangs for buck, unbeatable IMO...
No meaningful comparison can be made with a 911 tho - different cars for different markets.
-
with u on that mate.
i spose my point is this.... a porsche is made for an environment that aint real world. :)
-
if a mid life crisis brings a porsche, ok I can have that crisis ;D ;D ;D :y
must warn you tough, those cars dont excuse any senior moment.. :-/
-
I've no idea about Porkers, never driven one of any configuration. Obviously by thier nature they may be expensive at times but you'd expect that. If you want one & can afford it the get one mate. I can only advise you to pay more for one with full history & a reasonable mileage. If you like & keep it it'll serve you better & if you decide it's not for you after all you should get your money back. Guy. 8-) :y
While we're at it how do you all pronounce Porsche?
"Porsh"?
or
"Porsher"? I say "Porsh". ::)
-
But thats the beauty of the later-variant 911's, Webby - they ARE real-world! No other car has been engineered to deliver what it can - a docile town car with enough luggage space for a (smallish) weekly shop or a reasonable size suitcase, long service intervals, real-world pricing on most parts, unfrightening fuel consumption even when being given the beans (and the toast too ;D), and - it's a genuine, unarguable supercar that delivers performance and road or track mastery that is almost unsurpassed.....
Even if you dont want one, dont like them, hate the drivers of them, you (I think) have to admire the concept, and the realisation of that concept - it truly is engineering genius (and as someone else mentons earlier, that flat 6 sounds incredible when being rowed along hard.. :y)
-
hahaha ok fair enough.... id still rather have a jaguar ;D ;D ;D
i pronounce it porsh ;)
-
Del,
think hard mate, cos if you buy a porsche yes very nice( I have the use of a 911 targa here from the year 78 approx, nice to drive its a nice handling car etc etc
BUT!!!is it you?
no matter where you leave it some dork will have a jealousy fit and vandalise it, i actually thought you lived in the smoke but see you in ashford, dont know what the area you live in is like but there are bound to be some idiots around ;D and porsche paint is horrendous not to mention spare parts and insurance, you would be better off going and hiring one from the specialists
for a long weekend, then you will know if you really want one or not? you might just save yourself a few grand and a few headaches!! must admit i was really looking forward to driving the 911 but somehow it was a disappointment? i owned a Martini 924turbo years ago and that drives better than the 911 in my opinion!
jm2pw mate :y
-
If you want one & can afford it the get one mate.
I'm from the above school. I have never understood the thought that if someones of a particular age wants a certain something, and is treating themselves to it, why does it have to be a "mid life crisis"
For me it will be the the XJ6 or BMW 635.
-

Had an XJR that shape already, brilliant, but averaging 6 mpg at one point wasn't good :o

yeah but if you own a jag or a porsche, mpg shouldnt be a concern.
thats why im waiting til ive saved loads of dough b4 i buy one...... and i promise u i will ;)

-
ok, lets do a TG comparison of the bmw, porsche and jag (xkr).
0-60 is 4.5 secs in the xkr - whats the porsche and jag?
:) :) :)
-
BMW 635d is the best bet I think, plenty of horsepower, DMS remap will get it too 348 BHP and give me about 40 mpg so I'm looking at those, then agin I may not bother with the coupe car, too impracticle.
-
well im 41 now got the itch as well
and was due a nice insharance payout. so what do i spend it on :D
thort about the ushal mid life coke and hookers choice.
but decided on a harley davison instead lol
just waiting to it warms up a bit
for the car im happy with my omega for now
-
porsche 911 turbo and bmw 635 belong to different leagues.. however if you want to compare similiars , M6 which belongs to that league is 4.5 secs..

Charlie & naughty girls sound good to me but i've been drug free for years, not even a spliff. I visit too many docks that can give random swab tests. What did George Best once quote? Something along the lines of..

and another fact, on a curvy road ,porsche will beat all even with less hp..
-
hahahah yes thats my point... sure it will beat most cars..... but whats more desirable - in mho its a jag ;)
and id like to point out the xkr is fabulously fast and a great handler (according to TG hahahahahaha ;D ;D ;D ;D

Absolutely. A mate of mine has just bought a mint 1983 one. Not a mark on it. Bodywork immaculate, interior immaculate, 20k miles on the clock.
What's up with me? I'm lusting after a BMW. :o

Absolutely. A mate of mine has just bought a mint 1983 one. Not a mark on it. Bodywork immaculate, interior immaculate, 20k miles on the clock.
What's up with me? I'm lusting after a BMW. :o
Kevin
I would certainly agree with that.
I would also mention the 840 as being a BMW that one could justifiably seek and maintain some semblance of dignity.

The old 6 series was a lovely car. ......
This has been sat here for the past 4 or 5 years http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Grane+Road&aq=0&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=13.52256,43.286133&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Grane+Rd,+Haslingden,+Rossendale+BB4,+United+Kingdom&ll=53.718958,-2.425919&spn=0.026411,0.084543&z=14&layer=c&cbll=53.718869,-2.425629&panoid=gJiYPYJTlcNTI2C6fwUKIQ&cbp=12,86.14,,1,13.36
and I saw when I drove passed it last week it last week that some low life has put the passenger door window through. :'( :'(. It looked immaculate when it was first parked up. :(

The 840 right now is ridiculously cheap - if you can afford to buy a good one (and £10K easily does that), keep it garaged and well fettled, it will surely give you more than your money back in ten years time. The 840 is a fantastic, laughably under-valued motor, but the trouble with them is that they can now be bought in rough-ish shape for £4K or less, and are thus attracting the crew that are trading up from modifying E36 3-Series, and thus diluting the appeal.... ::)

I'm getting a strong urge to buy a 911 :-/
Are you, erm, how can I put this? of the same ilk as Graham Norton?
What about something a little more manly? Something handbuilt and British? Something that kicks sand in the faces of those feminine little Krout cars?

If you're going to buy a TVR you might as well buy a kit car. They are one and the same IMHO. ;)
