you can probably turn the accelerometer off on the phone if you want to take corners at "speed" :y

depends on the app, you can set it in the iPhone OS not to rotate, belive some apps, have individual setting. :y

Turn as in follow the road, or turn landscape/portrait? The compass & GPS should be entirely separate from the accelerometers .. though the GPS might have a harder time 'guesstimating' your speed & direction if it loses a GPS lock without them.
Double click the home button, scroll left on the bar at the bottom and you'll find the 'lock orientation' button (rotating arrow in a box) .. just in case you didn't already know :)

Don't suppose you can alter it like you can in WinMo.
TomTom kicks off with a custom OOF load screen on mine.

Freenav (or is it navfree) is a decent freebie satnav app, once you've got your head out of 'tomtom mode', and learn its simple (but different) interface. Mrs TB uses copilot (as it was cheapest at time), again quite good.
No idea if these stop rotation, as we use mounts...

How good are the audio instructions? The nDrive App I have has great visuals, but useless on the bike when I need audio. It quite often gets the exit on round-abouts wrong.

I never look at the screens. Ever. I think the visual parts should be disabled, or made pictorial (or safe screen on old fashioned tomtom speak). Distracting, therefore bloody dangerous.
But then the world is a made place - I can fail an MOT over a bloody dingly dangly, but the police turn a blind eye to a windscreen full of gay gonks stuck all over it.
Every satnav system I've had, the audio alone has been good enough. I think one of the keys is to use it even when you know where you are going, so you get to know what its telling you to do. Then when you are in an unknown area, you understand the instruction more clearly.
I would say copilot does chatter a lot... ...like a running commentry ;D

I think the 3d displays are excellent personally, they get alot of info on the screen not possible with a 2d display, and I find them very useful for reading twisty B roads when the exit of a bend is not visible. Helps with those "tightening up" moments.
Certainly can't fault Navfree so far. But yet to use it on a new route or see how well it re routes etc.

my mate has an iphone and the tom tom app he has is just as good as my tom tom xl.
i personally look and listen to my s/nav. but i do make sure i have it as close to my line of view as possible. :)

See, different priorities... ...mine is for the last mile. Most people, even the wet earred kids, know how to get from town to town.
So even if mine is on, I tend to ignore it until I really need it...
I notice, sadly/worringly, that virtually all new versions have lane guidance now. If you can't work out what lane to use, time to stick the rather L-plates on again >:(

More senior members will undoubtedly know that is a pet hate of mine. I think any shite half heartedly stuck to the windscreen should be bloody well banned, just like mobiles.

also the other problem is that people are now reliable on them. e.g. people who have only been driving a year or so will insist they cant get somewhere without using their tom tom.... like they cant live without their mobile. or faccebook.
