Since mid yesterday afternoon I have had problems with my AOHell broadband.
I can access many sites .. but there are just as many that I can't.
There is no error generated by IE or Firefox ... it just sits there saying "loading ........" and never gets anywhere.
Initially I thought it was https (secure) sites .. but its not .. I can access HSBC and Natwest but I can't get to Birmingham Midshires or Paypal.
I can get to here .. but I can't get to Bt.com
I don't believe it to be my computor as the same occurs on this one, the lapto, and the phone on WiFi. I can access all sites using the phone on "mobile".
This leaves just AOHell servers or my wireless modem/router. I've checked the settings on the modem/router and all look good. I've flushed the DNS caches on both the laptop and this computor
As you can imagine ... AOHell representative on the phone ... I believe speaking from Delhi, assures me there is nothing at all wrong with AOHell and will not progress the problem any further as I use an "unsupported modem" .. and suggests I ring Belkin. As I don't think its the modem I have not done this.
Anyone any ideas on :
a) What else I can do from this end to check/fix the problem ??
b) Which ISP I should tell AOHell I am changing to
c) How long it takes to change ISP from AOHell to one that works...
BTW .. I have been with AOL many, many years and until they became part of "talk, talk" (well named as they don't listen, listen)I was well happy.
:(
-
You with Sky? Broadband from them is actually very reliable, I had a line installed in my bedroom at home, connection was hammered, stayed stable!
That said BT which is in the office at home was bullet proof in reliability, we maybe bounced that modem once a year!
If your on a monthly subscription, it should be fairly instant to switch, just cancel the contract and go with BT or whoever.
Tried a hard reset of your modem/router?

I'm looking to move away from Pipex for about 2 years (but been too lazy to get on with it ::)), ever since they were taken over by Talk Talk (or more to the point, Carphone Warehouse whom I detest).
Trouble is, I live in the sticks so any of the advertised offers don't apply, due to the rubbish exchange, except BT. Now I get a reasonable speed with Pipex (1.5meg) but all others seem to be quoting .5meg :(
Zen is a good contender at the moment, although they are pricey, or back to BT
Should add... I wouldn't touch AOL with a bargepole as their software is almost viral! ::) ::)

But you are part of AOHell .. as AOL are part of Talk,Talk, who are part of Pipex who are part Carphone Whorehouse .... .. :(
AOL without their software is very simple to setup and use .... especially using a wireless router .. :)
-
sounds like a dns error, have you tried pinging the sites or tried a different pc?
I assume you have deleted browsing history (cookies etc)
try this:
Open a command prompt. To open an elevated Command Prompt window, click Start, point to All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.
At a command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
ipconfig /flushdns
-
I would try a different modem and a different lappy which is not yours..
and try "tracert www.somewhereelse.com" from cmd line
will show you where it hangs

tried a ping or traceroute to a site that does not work?
-
tried a ping or traceroute to a site that does not work?
tracert (short syntax of traceroute)
-
If you have a possible DNS issue then use a free DNS such as 4.2.2.2
-
Done a couple of tracert to 3 different sites that don't work ... they all time out at some point .. but the IP's are different for each site .. but always the same for THAT site .. if you get my drift ...
BT times out at 62.172.57.218 - 11 steps
Paypal times out at 194.25.208.10 - 9 steps
esavings times out at 62.172.57.2 - 11 steps
:(
-
They probably would due to firewalls.
Only thing to note is that they are getting to the router pre the firewall. Thus you'd see something like xxxxxxx.ukcore.bt.xxxxxxxxxx for the BT site

dns:156.154.70.22
alternate dns :156.154.71.22
try those dns adresses (will need reboot)
and try opening closing your router to change ip
and also test with safe proxies
-
dns:156.154.70.22
alternate dns :156.154.71.22
Sorry cem .. what do I do with that info ??
Ok will do thanks .. :)
-
You use manual DNS on your network settings and use those instead or as I originally suggested 4.2.2.2
-
dns:156.154.70.22
alternate dns :156.154.71.22
Sorry cem .. what do I do with that info ??
this is another free dns.. that routes you ..
also try reaching same destinations with safe proxies..
I'm curious what causes that ?
from network settings (sorry)
-
OK .. understand now .. :) Just stuck them in the router and rebooted .. off to try now ..
Don't understand the free proxie bit mind .. :(
EDIT ..
No change .. BT, Paypal, etc still don't connect and doing a tracert they time out at exactly the same IP
I guess its something to do with the AOHell BB line ??? The ones that worked before .. still work ... the ones that didn't .. still don't .. :(
-

free proxies hide your ip (not sure will work for your case) but may use an alternative route
also I ckecked the ip's from

also you can leave the router on the same dns ip but you can change the pc's/lappies dns.. :y

Proxy (Caching) servers simply cache pages to speed up browsing. Similar to your Internet Exploiter cached pages.
-
No need to alter the router, change the Host DNS entry (PC)

well I've just tried the 4.2.2.2 ... same result :( And I can't use that WHOIS link as its one of those that won't connect
Guess its another conversation with India tomorrow .. and a new ISP fairly soon

We were with Freedom 2 Surf, who got taken over by talktalk, etc. Service was steadily getting worse with time. We changed to "Be", and downloading is considerably faster. Mind you, some sites like Ebay take a while to finish downloading pages. I wonder if its BT at fault ?. If I understand correctly, the signal has to go through BT's exchange and computer before reaching your ISP's network, so if BT's stuff is slowing things down, you are stuffed. Could they be giving preference to their customers in terms of bandwidth ?.

Right, you're all quick to blame the ISP, but it might not be (directly) their fault.
The ISPs only run small networks with links generally to the large hubs such as Telehouse and Telecity, and rely on larger transit providers, such as Level 3, from there on.
The transit providers tend to have resilient links, but as with all IT, generally relies on all the equipment cooperating properly. As always with IT, under failure conditions, reality doesn't always match the test conditions when the infrastructure was designed and tested. Been there, done that. Enjoyed it so much, its almost a weekly pleasure :(
Entwood - if the names are resolving to IPs, that (almost) rules out DNS issues. You need to study the traceroutes to see if they are all going via the same transit, and stopping at same point.
Additionally, remember virtually all infrastructure routers will prioritise real traffic over icmp echo-request and icmp echo-reply, making ping and tracert less useful than some people believe.

AOHell used to be through Virgin at one point (I know route shows BT) but try setting MTU to 1450 which may sort it.
the issue looks to be setting on the pc or router rather than connection. Did you try another pc on the connection? also is it wired or wireless?

TB .. thanks for that ... I'm now completely bamboozled .... I thought I'd be clever and type up some that failed and some that worked ...
Example of those that fail : ...using tracert www.bt.com it resolves to
tracing route to www.bt.com [62.239.237.2] then does 12 hops and fails at 62.172.57.218
and it will do that everytime without changing, even after rebooting both router and computer, dns flush whatever
tracert www.moneyfacts.co.uk resolves to
tracing route to www.moneyfacts.co.uk [213.121.201.156]
does 11 hops and fails at 195.99.110.182
I then thought I'd do omegaowners.com as its a site that works .... but tracert failed after 11 hops !!!
So tracert doesn't seem to be telling me anything accurate .. :(
EDIT :
Only common feature is the fact they fail after 11/12hops .. that make any sense to anyone ??
EDIT2 : Young lady in India informs me that I'm the only person in the world with this problem. She has no idea what the problem could be and is 2escaliting" it .. but it could be 48 hours before I get a response.
Going to try a factory reset on the router. :(

I think traceroute is giving you a 'red herring' Entwood.
I tried the same tests as you....
www.bt.com failed at the same point for me as well (altho their website works fine for me)
www.moneyfacts.co.uk also failed at the same point (again their website works fine for me)
omegaowners.com tho did work for me.....it got a timeout at hop 10 but then succeeded on hop 11
Points to note-
traceroute on www.bt.com and www.moneyfacts.co.uk both failed on a bt hub at birmingham/ilford on hop 11.
Pinging these sites doesnt work either.....so i suspect these web servers are set not to reply to pings.....and using traceroute, hop 11 is the actual web server and therefore not going to reply.
-
Makes sense TD .. but where to go from here ?? Done a full factory reset on the router. .. no change.
Next thing I'm going to try is using the phone a s a wireless point, see if the computer gets to those sites that way .... if it does its router or phone line ..
Probably ring you in 30 minutes or so asking to visit you and collect a router !!
:)

failing that i`m sure TB wil let you borrow Sammy sledge..... ;D ;D ;D
best solution ;D ;D ;D
-
imo well explained and may be of some use
http://www.exit109.com/~jeremy/news/providers/traceroute.html
however, really using a different router and pc combination may give more hints.. if they fail also the supplied connection is definitely faulty..
seems you will be expert soon Entwood ;D :y
-
Sorry for being so long... but latest attempts ...
Factory reset of router - No difference at all
Connect router to computer via ethernet cable - No difference at all
Connect Computer via USB tethering to phone - works perfectly
Connect laptop via USB tethering to phone - works perfectly
Connect laptop via phone Wi-Fi hotspot - works slowly but OK
Connect computer via phone wifi hotspot - get asked to supply a certificate all the time when trying to set up WPA (TKIP) which is what the phone is set to.
Move the whole caboodle to the front door and plug directly into the main BT socket - no difference
Seems to me the only things left are the router itself or the line.
About to phone Dave to borrow a router .. :)
Any more ideas gratefully accepted. I can't even do a "proper" search for an alternate ISP at the moment as half the sites I try I can't get to !!

Entwood , lastly you can make a test
with "Remote Traceroute Tools"
try back tracerouting your ip from australia , russia etc
but it seems to me that there are some firewalls or special setting at BT that stop trace route.
http://www.traceroute.org/#United%20Kingdom
there are many country sites that provide back trace..
you can get your ip from
http://www.whatismyip.com/
also a network analysing tool (trial for 10 days)
gives good info
(http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x80/mecdv6/pathanalyser.jpg)
you can download from here (if you can reach :-/)
http://www.pathanalyzer.com/download.opp

Thanks Cem .. downloading now .. :)

Entwood - what is your current IP - if its a new range thats recently been allocated, a lot of routers on the big, bad internet will not route it. Just one of those things.
-
Oh, and....
C:\Users\me>tracert www.omegaowners.com
Tracing route to www.omegaowners.com [217.155.56.220]
over a maximum of 30 hops:
1 <1 ms 1 ms <1 ms 217.155.56.220

Dynamic IP so a new one every router reboot .. present one is

gateway : 92.6.92.1
primary DNS server : 92.31.241.20

no probs , any temporary ip is ok (they remain same until you close the router).. important part is try those sites that you cant reach.. you can ping them with their names and find the ips..
ping www.somewhereelse.com so you can find the ip
also you can test with different dns ips we gave yesterday

My personal experience of similar symptoms (apparently random failure to connect to some websites) was caused by a fix I had applied years ago and forgotten about.
I had been struggling to get DNS working automatically and had entered manual settings for the DNS servers. It had worked fine for years but I assume that after my provider (Nildram) was absorbed into the Tiscali/Talk Talk/Opal/CWH
empire they eventually switched off the DNS servers I was using. I updated the DNS server settings and it seems OK now :y
In my case I am using a Linux box as a home gateway so the details are different but the cause may be the same.
-
The DNS servers on AOHell are set to automatic .. but I've been trying the alternate ones given above ... no success so far .. :(
Given what TB said earlier .. if I put a www......... into the system it gets resolved to a dns number instantly .. so I'm guessing the DNS servers are OK ... it all seems to collapse with the routing .. as tracert starts but runs out before connecting .. :(
EDIT ..
Even tried these ...

It will do as you will inevitably hit a firewall at some point that will more than likely drop ping traffic.
You can prove the site connectivity by telneting (Assuming you aren't using Vista or Win7) to it on port 80 or 443 for secure.
You can also use nslookup to find out which DNS server you are really connected to.

Well ... seems I was wrong .... or AOHell have fixed it in the last 2 hours !! :0
Been to Taxi Driver's (Thanks Dave) and picked up his spare modem/router .. connected it in (presently by ethernet as the wireless config seems to be unhappy ... it wants to use a 10 digit key, my system wants to use a 13 digit one !!) and all sites now work.
I'll try the belkin again later (got to go out for a couple of hours) but looks like it was the modem/router all the time .. :(
Thanks again to Dave for his help :y :y :y

Just rechecked my Belkin .. nah .. must be FUBAR .. :(
As to WEP .. my wireless card on WEP demands 5 or 13 charcater code .. yours give 10 or 20 !!! still do do some research .. but presently working fine as unsecured ... :)
Just waiting for the queue of OOFers outside trying it .... might sell a few hotdogs/coffees you reckon ???
Very grateful for all the help and advice. I'll go to ebuyer and order a new one when I get home ... off out for a few hours .. (router will be in OFF mode .. :) so please keep the queue orderly until I return )
:)

Wouldn't worry about WEP being encrypted, should take the average script kiddie about 10 mins to crack a WEP code.

As far as the wireless problem.....remember the router can only do WEP encryption....so to temp solve the wireless prob, i suggest turning off encryption......promise i wont pull up outside and start downloading dodgey sites ;D ;D :D
:)
Before you do.....you have swapped the splitters about??....assuming you used the one attached to my router.. :-/ just to check you havent got a duff splitter...

I is back :)
Dave .. splitters changed a long time back in this saga .. :) and all rechecked using your router ... all good .. :)
WEP has been sorted, just changed from the ASUS wireless to a Belkin PCI card .. now all good. I know WEP is pretty poor but it's better than nothing as it will, usually, just show as encrypted on a scan ...
Now to order a replacement ... :)
Anyone any suggestions ?? I'll probably stick with 802.11g as both PCI card and the laptop USB thing are g ..
