Title: Bargain or nightmare?
Post by: Nickbat on 20 May 2007, 00:23:40
Don't know what to make of this:

http://dealerservices.autotrader.co.uk/72866/stock.htm

1999, 3.0 CDX, dual-fuel, 58K....£350?

.....NO KEYS! :o :o

Post by: Markjay on 20 May 2007, 00:37:56
For starters, it's not a 'proper' CDX because there is no climate, no sunroof, and only front windows are electric, rear are manual...

It has HIDs, which is nice for parts (though one washer jet is missing)....

99 should have radio controls on steering wheel me thinks?

The white colour (and suspicious-looking hole at front of roof) suggets maybe ex-plod?

No mentioning of MOT

If it is LPG converted, I can't find any evidence for it in the engine bay?

Car has been stood for a while, note leaves blocking the scuttle drain

Oh and there was never a 3.0 CDX model made.  ;)
Only MV6 or Elite.... and that looks suspiciously like an ex plod car.

Worth £200 for parts, if it runs....

Looks very odd ex plod anyway - no sigh of any LPG kit, no evaporator injectors or mixers in evidence

You know dam well its worth more than that in bits......how much for the cams, how much for the heads, how much for the LSD, how much for the gearbox setup.....etc etc

You could always get a key and security pass and turn up with a Tech 2 :y

LOL, you sound almost tempted.  I could lend you a spare Tech2 ::)

I think, at £350, there is no money in it to get it working to sell - lots of broken/missing trim etc.  And, tbh, there are cheaper non runners for breaking, eg cambelt failures...
Title: Re: Bargain or nightmare?
Post by: Admin on 20 May 2007, 09:52:57
I know it is worth more, if the bits are in a serviceable condition.
With no keys, you have no idea of what is inside the engine, and what shape certain components are....

My comment is based on what I would recommend someone offering a dealer for it, in its current condition. :)

I'd be b*ggered if I would pay a dealer more than £200 for a car with no keys, no log book, no chance that it has done 58k and no idea of what has been done to it (and I'm pretty sure you would do the same!  ;)) .

defo ex-plod! It has the calibrated speedo i saw in one pic.

I am tempted by this, could have it off him for £300 i rekon if you bargin hard?

I'd clean it up and sell clearly as ex plod, should make near £900 depending on millage.

Humm shall i....  ::)

Edit: - just saw ad said 58k miles? - bull. looking at the ware on the steering wheel its more like 158k

Investment and return Tunnie...  :)

Only look at buying that for parts as you have no idea about so many things.
Bargain well enough and that will be had for £250 easily at which point there should be good profit.

I have just finshed Uni, and next week going to the Lake District, got to work on the Senator, following week, £0.02 trip to Milan, then following week i show my project at Made in Brunel, then I move out of my Uni house....

I think i can fit in a ex plod project   :D

Seriously though how am i going to get it started? Can tech2 start a car? Or do a James and rip off the steering column and jump it (immobilizer issues?)

High Wycombe is on my way home too  ::)

AR35's will always be sort after.... also I think James put in a AR25 in his 3.0 Elite? He should be needing on soon  ;)

Could be worth a breaker this one, as DTM mentioned LSD... heads, cams, although no toys like cruise, dash ect... got HIDS though.

Probably worth more to get running as lpg, but don't like the look of the passenger side front wing on closer inspection of the pictures... looks like its had a nock there.

You don't need to fix a car to make money from it.....

Pay the right amount and there is profit in that.

I agree, no money in this to make it a runner, all money in breaking - if his parents don't mind the driveway being a scrapyard for a week or 2...

go on Tunnie !!

Get £50 off it for an inaccurate addy, £50 do get it to you and you have a T plate 3litre to break.

If you have some storage places take everything off it nd get rid of the shell ( ive just sold a rear passenger window for a Rover this morning for £25) so thnk beyond the engine and trim  :y

not sure what Mother & Father tunnie would have to say about storage.... not got the space really, got 4 cars as it is! and if the other garage is taken up with bits, it makes the driveway very full with 3 huge barges on it...

I did ring the seller, no reply. Tempted to call by on my way home, point out, no cruise, no lpg... try and get him ultra cheap.

No sign of filler, injectors, but extra wiring, some mess in bottom left of the picture.

No switch either.

Break it

Checked the reg at the DVLA and it was first registered on 29/06/1999, so tax and MOT are due shortly. No mention of dual fuel.  :-/

Have you been in touch with the seller, Tunnie?

I just rang the dealer selling it, he said he lot the keys when moving house.... he reckoned it was ex Met police, hence London city miles and not motorway  :-?

I reckon i could have a few quid off him in the price, (he had it 6 weeks)

It does have some damage to the passenger front wing, but the previous MOT does state 58k miles, however very suspicious of that!

Wondering if it is worth a punt this one  :-/

Tricky..  without the keys, you'll have to take the seller's word that the engine actually truns and that the autobox is OK....

Still, he shouldn't realy advertise it as CDX, and he should have mentioned it was ex-plod, so don't know how trustworthy he might be...

You're right, Markie, you can't be sure it's the same, but given that it's a white T reg with the same alloys (not usual ex-plod) with exactly the same mileage and the disappearing High Wycombe ad.... Well, it makes you wonder.
