I have just become aware of that new airgun law comes into force on 10 February. In essence one will be liable for a fine of up to £1000 if you don't lock up your airgun so it cannot be available to kids (means under-18s).
Details are on the home office website http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/media-c...s/lock-and-key . Difficult to believe this new legislation appeared on their site on 27th Jan and the law comes into effect 10th Feb . BASC are supporting the move it appears: http://www.basc.org.uk/en/media/pres...5D9C42CCD1DAE7

Links not working?
Mine are kept under lock and key anyway, and have been for a long while :y
Although it's a very useful "heads up" for those who don't. But, it was always my understanding that it was recommended that they were kept in a safe place away from young hands, as oppose to being mandated that they were locked away? :-/
-
Surely that's a good thing? The fine should be alot more. I think there should be alot more controls and they shouldn't be removed from a shooting club.
-
I thought you could have an air gun at 14, have I missed something....?
-
they shouldn't be removed from a shooting club.
How about for folk who use them legitimately for pest control - on farmland over which they have permission to shoot - which doesn't necessarily require a firearm for humane dispatch (i.e. rats, rabbits, pigeons, etc)?
-

That was the law - but firearms law seems to be constantly changing.
Last I heard, no-one under 18 could purchase an airgun or pellets, but somebody 14 or over could receive one as a gift - as long as they were under the direct supervision of a competent adult of 21 or above, on land on which they have permission to shoot
-
My house doesnt have children in it.... certainly nobody under the age of 18......... nobody under the age of 28 for that matter.
Just another 'TV license' tax.

Not working here either... ::) ::)

An airgun is a firearm. Like I said, I don't think they should be removed from a shooting club. As for pest control, what do you define as a pest? It's the animals planet as much as it is ours. From my experience the vast majority of people who possess airguns are people who seem to enjoy inflicting unnecessary violence on animals and people. They should get a hobby instead.
I'm generally anti legisltaion, but I think they should be banned, they're bloody stupid.
-
IMHO, the best way of reducing airgun-related incidents is education, not regulation.
As a young child, I wasn't even allowed a toy gun. Once I was old enough, and had had firearms safety drummed into me so it became second nature, my dad started to take me out shooting with him. I've done the same with my children.
As the old adage says - a gun will not kill anybody; it's the person behind who does.
As I say - educating people about firearms safety is the key element.

Exactly!
Next we'll have to lock our kitchen knives in a cabinet, and the Chain Saw, Hedge Trimmer, Ball Point Pen.............................
Once again, common sense is being removed from our young. I sincerely hope there is a revolt of massive proportions soon! I'm a very peaceful man, but this kind of thing boils my piss.

I can think of more important things that would 'boil my piss'.
Common sense dissappeared along time ago. That's why there's so may arrogant 'only care about myself' selfish bastards out there.
Yes, you might behave in the correct way, but there's an increasing majority who don't. As always they spoil it for the rest. Some people are incapable and unwilling to be educated.
Society makes laws to protect people from themselves and each other, and being young and fit myself, and having being shot a number of times, it hurts, but as said, I'm young and fit so can still defend myself. More vulnerable people can't. These are the people society needs to protect from our resident idiots.

Correction - they are classed as Low Powered Air Weapons, as long as they are below 12ftlb in power (for rifles), or 6ftlb (for pistols). A Firearm is classed as a rifle being above 12ftlb in power, which makes it a Section 1 Firearm, and so requires a Firearms Licence. (Pistols being above 6ftlb are Section 5 Firearms, which are banned).
I'm not being funny Geoff, but have you actually ever been shooting before?
The reason why I ask is that many friends of mine enjoy playing cricket. I've never played it myself, and have never wanted to. But, I don't tell my cricket-playing friends to (and to quote you) - "get a hobby".
Each to their own mate. And if you've seen first-hand the damage that animals such as rats, rabbits and pigeons can do to farmland, crops, and hence livelihoods, then you wouldn't question the practice of pest control :y
-
They are fire arms. I have seen the damage so called pests can do, and yes I bloody would question their use as pest control thanks very much. Like I said it's their planet aswell. We arrogant humans seem to think it's acceptable to kill animals for our own convenience.
Have I been shooting? Are you having a laugh? I've fired more guns than I care to remember. I can strip them blindfolded and re-assemble them after cleaning and oiling them. I've shot and been shot at, and not for retarded blood thirsty 'sport' reasons either, thinly veiled as pest control or not.
Look, I can do a smiley face aswell :y :y :y :y :y :y :y :y :y :y :y :y :y :y :y :y :y
Edit to add
Incidentally, when pests try and destroy all my crops, I don't bloody shoot them. So to that end, how do you justify shooting innocent animals who are trying to get food for themselves and their young?

Funny you should say that Broomie... We have a motorhome, and us motorhomers when in transit, have to ensure that the kitchen drawer (with the cooking knives in) is securely closed at all times
Once again, common sense is being removed from our young.
Defo Broomie - it's all about good parenting. Good parenting nationwide removes the need for a nanny state! And a crack round the noggin off the local bobby if little Johnny steps out of line! ;D

If you were to check, gun crime has significantly decreased (nationally) over a couple of decades.
Knife crime peaked just over 5 years ago (decreasing slightly since).
Wouldn't we be better of sticking the Kitchen Devil's in a locked cabinet?
I wont go into detail, because it's my business and I dont talk about that stuff, but I've had several thousand rounds of serious ammunition, including missiles fired at me and my colleagues. Thankfully, I dont have any physical wounds to prove this.
On another note, shooting animals or pests, vermin, whatever is actually a good thing when done in a controlled manner. DOnt forget that us as humans introduced (example) The Grey Squirrel. Kill 'em all!

Knife crime, as some sort of comparison is irrelevant. It doesn't matter if gun crime has dropped. One gun crime is one too many. And as for people saying about good parenting etc, if we had good parenting across the country, we wouldn't be in the lawless state we're in.
I don't care if we introduced grey squirrels or not. What then is your justificaation for killing them?

My point exactly - it's all about educaton, not legislation!!!!
Look at handgun crime stats as a case in point. Since they were banned, crimes involving handguns have sky-rocketed. Which just goes to prove - the criminals of this world can, and do, continue to hold them, whereas us law-abiding people cannot.
Do you think that's fair Geoff??
And as for your comment about about "killing arseholes who shoot animals" - my family and I enjoy a nice rabbit stew, pigeon pie, and pheasant - basically, anything I shoot which we can eat, we do eat. Is that wrong? Or would you sooner us buy it from a butcher, who's bought it from another "gun", who shot it in the first place? :y

If, as your previous post suggested, that you'd done time in the Services, then you'd know what "field-stripping" is ;) I you haven't, then apologies for the assumption on my part.
Field-stripping is taking down a rifle (or pistol for that matter), and cleaning/servicing/oiling it before re-assembling it.

My blood pressure isn't rising. I'm superfit! So shall I take that as 'no, you can't justify killing innocent animals'?
I take it you're a vegetarian then? Ever been to an abatoir?
I shoot animals, it's a more humane death than you will find any meat on our supermarket shelves has been through. I also eat what I shoot because I have practically and unintentionally feeding what I shoot (they eat my home grown veg)
Eating what I shoot is better for the environment, free (less the cost of the pellet) and legal. This law is just enforcing what air gun (not firearms) owners should be doing anyway and is good news.
The OP is right, education is the key to firearms control. He came in here giving a heads-up on a new law which many havent heard about and you pile in to him about using firearms? I for one am glad of the OP's contribution.
Oh, and we dont call it field-stripping in the forces. We refer to it as stripping a weapon. :y

Or electrocuting it in an abatoir, with them all lined up in a queue?
I could do with an air-gun actually, take out the pigeons on the roof opposite

I did some checking, I need the permission of the landlord in which the building/house the pigeons are.
There is a notice in my flat lobby saying not to feed them, as they are pests/rodents. I suspect it would be easy to get approval to shoot them :)

A tongue in cheek comment Tunnie I know :y
But the other laws on airgun usage are quite clear:
- You must have the land-owners permission to use an airgun.
- The pellets cannot leave the boundaries of that land.
- You cannot shoot over a public right of way
- You cannot shoot within a 50 feet of a public right of way.
Shooting ettiquette, some of these are covered by cruelty laws:
- Ensure that the weapon is properly zeroed
- Ensure the weapon is suitable for the task. ie you have enough power (muzzle velocity) for the type and size of animal you are to dispatch.
- Ensure you are not too far away so as to cause the pellet to loose sufficient power.
- Ensure you are able to dispatch the animal with a clean and accurate shot so as to cause minimum distress to the animal.
- Follow-up each shot animal as soon as possible so as to ensure quick dispatch.
Oh, and who mentionned rabbit pie? mmmmmmmm :P

Interesting, as I have no kids in my house I wonder if just leaving it in an unlocked cupboard would be suitable? No kids have access to my house so keeping the doors locked when I am out should be sufficient according to that link?

Could easily be arranged, Pigeons are known to be a pest, and the managment company of the building don't want them. Nor do Orange/T-Mobile/O2 who rent the roof.
- The pellets cannot leave the boundaries of that land.
This is the only stumbler point, I guess they could easily leave
- You cannot shoot over a public right of way
If I shot in direction of the shops yes, but, behind the flats the land is owned by Network Rail, so I can shoot in that direction!
- You cannot shoot within a 50 feet of a public right of way.
Does that include a vertical 50ft? I am on the 5th floor of 6.

Just spoke to the Home Office and he directed me to this HO Circular on the new law:

Interesting, as I have no kids in my house I wonder if just leaving it in an unlocked cupboard would be suitable? No kids have access to my house so keeping the doors locked when I am out should be sufficient according to that link?
I was having the same thoughts... It doesn't actually say it must be kept locked up, just out of the way of children :-/ :-/
Won't change how mine is kept though... I know it's safe that way ;)

I could do with an air-gun actually, take out the pigeons on the roof opposite
A tongue in cheek comment Tunnie I know :y
But the other laws on airgun usage are quite clear:
Shooting ettiquette, some of these are covered by cruelty laws:

I think in your situation you would need a vermin control certificate and even then the preference would be to use deterence rather than shooting in this instance.
-
They are fire arms.

I also have an air.. and see what damage it makes on wood and other things.. :o extremely dangerous .. ( I didnt know before I buy) and must never be used on animals..

I think the question of safe custody may come in here G.
Any firearm (including air weapons) must be secured when not in use (sensibly).
In the event or any holder leaving a firearm in those circumstances I would imagine that the Firearms Certificate would be revoked.
Where the circumstances involved a person under the age of 18 unlawfully breaking into your premises and discovering the unsecured weapon (irrespective of the offences he/she/it commits) then the amended S 46 could apply to the holder of the weapon 'permitting' by way of not securing it. (In the generally accepted sense of the legislation)

Given the new directive .. you would have to argue, in court, the "reasonableness" of your decision.
The new directive does NOT stipulate how you must secure the weapon .. in fact it is at pains NOT to do so ..
2. Section 46 inserts a new section 24ZA into the Firearms Act 1968, which makes it an offence for a person in possession of an air weapon to fail to take reasonable precautions to prevent someone under the age of 18 from gaining unauthorised access to it.......
and
6. The new offence requires people to take ‘reasonable precautions’ to prevent unauthorised access to an air weapon by young persons aged under 18. What will constitute ‘reasonable precautions’ will depend on the particular circumstances in each individual case and it is therefore not possible to be prescriptive. However, the simple steps set out below are a useful starting point. ......
I actually think some common sense may (?) have crept into the drafting of this legislation
In your example .. it could be argued that the kids would just have to break a window to access the weapon, so the precautions were not reasonable. If the weapon was also in a locked cupboard then more reasonable precautions had been taken .
Don't know .. would need to be argued in court.

I have wondered that too Zulu :-/
Also, even though an FAC is not required for an air weapon rated below 12 ft/lbs muzzle velocity I think should you be found wanting of this and you had an FAC as well you may risk losing it

Yes G, even though the prime legislation doesn't seem to prescribe how weapons are secured in these circumstances. (That I can find anyway)
Home Office advice, as interpreted and applied by the Chief Officer of any relevant constabulary (through local Firearms officers) appears to the operative factor when controlling the issue of certificates and control of weapons held by members of the public.
I would think it's a case of Entwood's common sense being the governing factor - sensibly, as individual circumstances will always vary.
And yes, should an unsecured air weapon fall into the hands of someone under the age of 18 (relevant to the op) or indeed any person (who used it in prohibited circumstances), then I would imagine that if the holder of that weapon held other weapons on a Firearm Certificate the local FO would certainly look at the holders suitability to continue holding weapons.

My blood pressure isn't rising. I'm superfit! So shall I take that as 'no, you can't justify killing innocent animals'?
I take it you're a vegetarian then? Ever been to an abatoir?
Indeed, whats the difference between shooting a cow with a gun (would never see it coming)
Or electrocuting it in an abatoir, with them all lined up in a queue?
I could do with an air-gun actually, take out the pigeons on the roof opposite
You'd have issues though as you would be breaking the law on several counts ;)
I did some checking, I need the permission of the landlord in which the building/house the pigeons are.
There is a notice in my flat lobby saying not to feed them, as they are pests/rodents. I suspect it would be easy to get approval to shoot them :)
Pigeons don't have teeth Tunnie

But they are classed as pests :y
Used to do a lot of Pest Control work when my old man was in the business, included licensed shoots.
Was rather worrying one night though when the message somehow didn't get to the Police who dispatched a firearms unit :o :o

Pigeons are legally categorised as vermin and thus fair game. They are also quite tasty roasted, well the big fat woodies are anyway not sure about city vermin :-/

leave the pigeons alone.. they have enough enemy and problems living in the city anyway.. :(

They shouldn't even be in the city. They are lazy animals, only there because we are stinking filthy animals who deliberately or accidentally give them more than enough food to eat rather than be in nature where they should be :y

no..
they are half domestic animals.. they are used for communication for ages.. so they get used to live with humans for a long time.. now you cant simply turn your back.. also they they are trained here for some contests and many people like them.. and I'm glad not everyone is in your idea, because once we start to hunt and eat them you cant find even one :(

Aye, I've done my fair share of field-stripping too!
Can I ask, if you don't mind, how you deal with pest contol on your farm?
And what's field stripping?
I haven't got a farm.
I've answered your question, now you answer mine.
What would make you think I have done time in the 'services'? If by 'services' you mean 'forces', yes i have been in the forces.
When you mention 'field stripping', after having just talked ahout crops in a field, one would think you're using the term 'field stripping' in terms of a field with crops. If by 'field stripping', you mean the correct term of 'battle clean', then yes i kow exactly what that is.

As you wish! :)
edit: You would claim a life for killing a life. So, is it eye for eye in your eyes? I'm so glad I wasn't trained in your camp, sir.
(I called you sir as I guess you are older than me 1970 being your birth date?)
Anyway, I'm to bed. I have work in the morning. Sweet dreams.
Alot of assumptions there, wrong though

Yes i am a vegetarian. Whether or not I've been to an abatoir is irrelevant, but yes I have.
Just because shooting animals is, as you say, more 'humane' than another form of death, does that still make it right? Is poisoning someone more 'humane' than beating them to death? If it is does that make it ok? Your justification seems flawed.
You say about it being within the law. Laws are made by man. There are many things you can do that are wrong that are not against the law. So this is irrelevant.
Why, just because we are more intelligent (some of us), and have more sophisticated methods of communication than animals, do some people think it's OK to treat animals badly? Imagine you're going shopping one day for food for your family, someone shoots you, your half dead, then they rip your guts out and throw them on the ground, you're definitely dead now.
You best tell Damon about the correct terminology.
Can you explain what you mean about piling into him? Whatever meaning you give to this, I think you are wrong. We have had a reasoned debate, with each putting their point across, so no I haven't piled into him.

I think your comment on Page 2 of "I say kill all the arrogant arseholes who shoot animals" could be construed as "piling in".

Well. Look how many experts we have here regading fieldcraft & country life. Firstly i'd like to make it clear that i have no military experience of real firearms or said combat. I admire the bottle of those of you who have but could'nt comment. I do however have a 22 Webley Xocet carbine barrel rifle with BSA sights that can easily drop a bunny from 60 yards & is legal pressure. I only use super H point pellets. I only shoot on land with a friend who has shooting rights on said land. Otherwise it stays cleaned & in it's case, it's not a toy. I eat most of what i shoot. Is that any worse than a fisherman taking his dinner home?
I've never posted my shooting in over 4 years because it was bound to offend some bleeding heart or other & i get into enough rows on here as it is. I shoot with gamekeepers. If we did'nt foxes would kill more than we do.
Somebody killed the roast dinner many of you will enjoy on Sunday, bacon sarnies, stews, sheppies pie, spagbol etc. If you are veggie then fair go that is your choice but by evolution we are hunters & carnivores, top of the food chain. That's just how it is, get over it. ::)

i'm gonna ask two really daft questions , basically cos its what i like to do lol
question 1, if i keep an air rifle locked in my cabinet downstairs , and an air pistol repeater upstairs in a lockbox say , in my wardrobe . if a burglar breaks in can i shoot the git and claim i was taking reasonable precautions to prevent a firearm etc failing into the wrong hands , i mean its the law afterall .
2nd , this is for geoffr70 , i can't help wondering if you live in a house on a housing estate and drive on a road and shop at a supermarket or local grocers etc ??? cos in my view mate unless you live in a bleedin prehistoric forest in a tent made from flax and coted in moss and eat only forest vegetables then your a hypocryte , do you have any idea how many animals were killed just to clear the land you live on ? or how many pests are killed just so your veggies dont get munched before they reach you ? how many ickle wickle badgers and foxes and bunny wabbits got squished and how many birds flattened by the bulldozers to build the roads you drive on ?
i know , your gonna tell me you only eat what you grow and you cuddle the slugs not kill em , i cant win an argument with you , i just dont have your conviction , find it bloody weird you were in the forces though , whats the deal ? its ok to kill humans but not animals , the words 'take your head for a wobble' spring to mind .

I have not and never will shoot any animal just for the fun of it..Ok with the exception of a rat. One day i come face to face with a pheasant.. Could have killed it no problem, but, i fired into the air to give it a fair chance, still couldn't shoot it. But, if i came face to face with an enemy and it was him or me, air rifle or not, i would not hesitate.
Just for the record i am not a vegetarian, i do eat meat, but do not shoot animals only Targets.. Air rifles can be a dangerous weapon but only if the holder is a dangerous person.
I can't shoot a bunny they are too cute.. :) And besides, what did he do to me.... :P

Cem. You are a kind & good hearted man, i enjoy your posts & value your friendship but we are going to have to agree to disagree on this one...call a truce if you like. I understand your views but will still shoot & eat meat. Sorry, Guy.
Seconded... Guy, you are a man after my own heart. I shoot the rabbits/Pigeons for food... I never let anything I shoot suffer and it is always eaten. It ids, as you say, no different to a fisherman in reality ;)

We can only equate this to nature. No matter how well intentioned none of us are going to stop the big cats killing thier prey, birds eating insects & worms, crocodiles attacking wilderbeast as they drink etc etc.
Vegetables are alive until we crop, peel, chop, boil/fry & eat them. We ALL have to eat.
