i play the guitar and he was one of my hero's .. i learnt parisien walkways from him R.I.P.
-
He was 57 or 58. Grew up about a mile down the road from me. was left handed but played guitar right handed (as do I).
Was in Thin Lizzy ar least twice, but left because he hated the drugs.
I saw him live at a private gig in a tiny little hall in Sheperds Bush a couple of years ago ( 200 people filled the place) and stood right at the front of the stage about 2 feet away from him. I watched his fingers on the fretboard for 2 hours trying to work out how he did what he did. In the end the answer came to me - god given talent, some people have it, the rest of us wish we had it.

So Lissie does not know who Gary Moore was? She is a member of a large club, as I had no idea either.
She simply posted here rather than ask Google,
Its much the same if i said Alex Trimble was a great singer, bet you don't know he is.
*but i'll bet you'll go off and google it ;)
-
Bloody hell, can't we try to be a bit more accomodating of other peoples views/knowledge/opinions, rather than constantly jumping down everybody's throats.
Jeez >:(

Thread tidied.

Saw him live years ago.
My favourite album is Rockin' Every Night Live in Japan.
Got it for £8 when LPs were normally £4
very sad news :'( :'(
-
sad news.. no chance to listen his music from his voice (live) anymore :(
-
Still in shock, can't believe this.
Seen him 4 times most recently last year at Wolverhamton.
Hero of mine and only 58.
Got to get the video player out the loft now as 'Live Blues' only on VHS.
Guess what I'm watchin' all night.
-
Despite being a lover of guitar rock the bleeding heart scream out crying style was'nt for me.. a bit too deep.
Still the man was always top of his game & an undeniable talent who will be a sad loss to many.
-
My Tuppenceworth..........
Gary Moore was to me (as I am sure many others) an inspiration.
I too, am left handed, but play right handed, and have been playing for over 45 years now, being taught at age 5, and have played semi professionallly for over 30 years, performing on the same stage as him on two occasions. (no bull****)
The mans attention to detail is astounding, being so afraid of not giving value for money and a great performance that he worries at the end of a gig that he played "good enough" (!!!)
The late Phil Lynott paid him the ultimate compliment........saying "if Jeezus himself had a rock band, he would want Gary for his guitarist!"
Well, he has him now.
I will always remember "Parisian walkways", "out in the fields" and his rendition of "whiskey in the jar" for his faultless tuneful sustain, and his attention to detail. Scott Gorham said he was simply "the man", and I totally agree.
Gary, your Les Paul will scream in Heaven, as it did on earth.
God bless you, and R.I.P. :'(

Just found out in the last half hour. :'( :'(

Its so sad when ANYONE passes away....I did not know the chap from Adam. Watched the posted vids, but not my style....
But fella....R.I.P. for what you gave to those who followed you and your stlye of music :(

not heard of his death before now! Am a bit taken aback to say the least. 57 is no age and wasnt aware of any health problems. As someone else on here who plays guitar I can say he will certainly be missed. Some of his 80s tight jeans/big hair stuff wasnt for me but he was a great guitar player who certainly had the sensibilities of a blues guitarist as much as a rock player and a great feel for both melody and tone. As for his famed sustain you only have to watch clips from his live shows when he walks to the predetermined spot on the stage and hits THAT note during "parissiene walkways" ...RIP
-
Gulp, another of my heroes gone.
-
Two of heros have died this year now,Gary moore and Mick Karn. That super group in the sky must be making some great music. RIP guys.

No - he will be in a group with Phil Lynott
-
Well I must admit I loved some of Gary Moores songs and to play an instrument is a gift in my view, but in Still Got The Blues the guitar almost sings......
I believe it was Albs that told me that Gary Moores Guitar was given to him by Pete Green from Fleetwood Mac and so the history of that Guitar has been extra ordinary talent in deed. Be great if it could carry on that History.
God Bless Gary you will live on in many a household and mind :-*

Sad news indeed another great talent gone RIP Gary

talking of peter green, anyone watch the documentaries on bbc4 last night on him and fleetwood mac? The perils of acid eh, but a reminder of what a great player peter green was. BTW, the guitar that green used for "albatross" was looked after and set up for that recording by my late uncle who was later to make and refurbish guitars for several bands inc led zep and slade. They played "albatross" at his funeral as it was one of his favourite tracks as well as a sort of tribute. Was this the same guitar that passed to gary moore I wonder?

Albs will more than likely know, but I have looked on wikipedia or whatever its called says
During this period Green sold his 1959 Gibson Les Paul sunburst guitar, which was associated with his music of that time, to Northern Irish guitarist Gary Moore.
I am sure though Albs said Green gave his guitar to Moore....

Apparently he stopped holding the note so long as he'd grown tired of some fans timing it on a stopwatch. ;D

The problem with Wikipedia is that anyone can post on it.
I could go into it now and modify it to read 'Darth Loo-Knee arranged the sale'. ;D

Peter Green gave the guitar to Gary Moore after a particularly hard drink and drugs session, saying "you'd better have this, don't think I can play it much longer......."
Gary agreed to just "look after it until he asked for it back", but unfortunately Peter died later that year, and "Blues for Greenie" was released soon after with a promise to keep it played.
The Gibson Les Paul sunburst guitar has been refurbished several times and refretted twice, but still would fetch over £125k should it ever go on sale because of its provenance (history).
Gary's family want it to go on permanent display somewhere, so sale is unlikely. His Fender Stratocaster and many of his other guitars will probably be sold though.....................form an orderly queue behind me, I would like to add it to my own burgeoning collection along with my signed guitar from Aerosmith, and my signed Carlos Santana PRS guitar.
I've got so many now that they are spread around 3 houses!!! ;D
-
Peter Green is alive and (sort of)well and is gigging once again on a regular basis. ;) ::)
Gary Moore sold the Les Paul, approx. 5 years ago. It was rumoured that he sold it for $500,000 but he denied it was as much as that. Apart from its history, it was a very special guitar because the pickup windings or wiring had somehow been wired/wound wrong at the factory which had given the guitar a unique sound and sustain. Its secret was only revealed when Moore let Gibson take it to their custom workshop where they dismantled and inspected it. They then made him copies of it which he used thereafter.
Blues for Greeny was released in the 80,s. Greeny gave Moore the guitar in the early 70,s. ;)
Gary Moore signature Les Pauls can be purchased from Gibson, if you have deep enough pockets. :y

Thats a very interesting piece of history Jerry. Im pretty certain it would have been the same guitar, as Im pretty certain he only had one Les Paul. The case he kept it in was given to him by Eric Clapton, as the Les Paul he used on the beano album was stolen and he was left with just the case. This album was of course, the one which brought the Les Paul (which had previously been largely ignored in this country) to the attention of everyone and popularised the sound of a Gibson played through an amp turned up full to give deliberate distortion, which gave us the "rock guitar sound" which survives to this day.
When Green became seriously mentally ill, he gave the guitar (or possibly long term loaned as sixstring said) to a young teenage lad from Belfast, who Green had spotted as having a lot of talent. The rest as they say, is history.
Btw Jerry, I did watch the documentary on Green at the weekend, it was excellent. I think those who say he was better than Clapton though, are being a bit silly tbh. ;)

I read an interview with Gary Moore where he spoke about the sale of the guitar. He said that he had stipulated that the sale had to be to an individual and not via a middle man for someone who wanted to make money from it. After the sale was completed, he recieved info which suggested to him that his terms had not been adhered to. He felt as though he may have been conned, and was taking legal advice as to the possibilty of reversing the sale. I dont know if anything came of it, but afaik the guitar hasnt resurfaced since. Could well be sat in a vault somewhere as an investment piece.
He also used a red stratocaster (1961 ?) quite often throughout his career, and Im sure this will be a sought after intstrument.
I do know his son plays guitar, so he may want to keep his dads collection ?
-
Thanks Albs for your info......
Gary's son does indeed play the guitar, but as Gary had over 150 guitars, he wouldn't be short of an axe to play.
BTW, the '61 strat is also a special one, its rumoured to be one of Buddy Holly's, made by Fender as a "thankyou" present.
"Blues for greeny" was released as a tribute to Peter Green, and although it was in the 80s, it was a genuine "last tribute" cos PG was so poorly at that time, it was expected he might just pop his clogs!!
Luckily, he is still around, and has actually played some pretty good music recently, but in my humble opinion nowhere near the standard of earlier years.
There is a train of thought that suggests that in the industry there will be a tribute concert and some kind of bursary in his memory to G.I.T (guitarist's school) and also Eric Clapton is rumoured to be arranging some kind of memorial.
Maybe somebody can find something in the music industry press that will confirm this??? (NME/Guitar Player etc etc) 8-)

A comment.
The day he died I did a search on him to see what happened, a certain gutter press toilet paper rag named after the nearest star claimed drink binges choking on vomit ect. >:( >:( >:( >:(
It come out as heart attack.
Can his family sue that gutter press for defamation
-
I will mention I never click on links to the paper with the same name as a computer manufacturer - this was in search results.
