As most of you know, I'm a mobile Electro-Mechanical engineer who travels the country repairing and installing things. This entails huge yearly mileages, and carrying large loads.
My poor Miggy estate has borne the brunt well, and has carried things that should never be carried in a luxury leather seated estate car, and now is the time to get myself a "work hack" and keep the Miggy for what it was designed for....a family car.
To this end, I have looked at a Renault Grande Espace 2.2dti, and with all the back seats removed it will carry all I need, and still give me a "car" to drive, and not pay all the double price tolls for commercial vehicles....eg £5.70 for a car, but £10.90 for a small van on the Severn Bridge!!
This Renault is only a W plate, but will just be for work, and if it lasts a year.......will think of a permanent solution on a similar vehicle. Can anybody tell me of any pitfalls/faults/drawbacks on this vehicle, BTW its a manual 'box, and a "base" model for very cheap money (£600), with tax/mot and towbar, and full service history.

If you find a good reliable one they are quite a nice drive, sadly finding a reliable espace is difficult, I had the older version(97) a few years ago and had no problems at all but the newer version is plagued with electrical issues which can cost a lot to fix

Forgot to mention, its one owner from new, full service history, and apart from a radiator hole, has had no problems with the last owner, and 10k service intervals.
COULD be a good one? or am I just going to get all the problems now it should have had on the first 90k.............LOL!

Potential head gasket problems looming, oh and its french. :D :)

vw s are reliable,seats in the back and room for a toolbox or two. should save you a few quid on the crossing too..

Had to read thread to ascertain whether it's of any relevance or I have anything useful to contribute. It isn't and I haven't, but I'm here so I'll contribute.

Once upon a time, there was a little girl named Goldilocks. She went for a walk in the forest. Pretty soon, she came upon a house. She knocked and, when no one answered, she walked right in.
At the table in the kitchen, there were three bowls of porridge. Goldilocks was hungry. She tasted the porridge from the first bowl.
"This porridge is too hot!" she exclaimed.
So, she tasted the porridge from the second bowl.
"This porridge is too cold," she said
So, she tasted the last bowl of porridge.
"Ahhh, this porridge is just right," she said happily and she ate it all up.
After she'd eaten the three bears' breakfasts she decided she was feeling a little tired. So, she walked into the living room where she saw three chairs. Goldilocks sat in the first chair to rest her feet.
"This chair is too big!" she exclaimed.
So she sat in the second chair.
"This chair is too big, too!" she whined.
So she tried the last and smallest chair.
"Ahhh, this chair is just right," she sighed. But just as she settled down into the chair to rest, it broke into pieces!
Goldilocks was very tired by this time, so she went upstairs to the bedroom. She lay down in the first bed, but it was too hard. Then she lay in the second bed, but it was too soft. Then she lay down in the third bed and it was just right. Goldilocks fell asleep.
As she was sleeping, the three bears came home.
"Someone's been eating my porridge," growled the Papa bear.
"Someone's been eating my porridge," said the Mama bear.
"Someone's been eating my porridge and they ate it all up!" cried the Baby bear.
"Someone's been sitting in my chair," growled the Papa bear.
"Someone's been sitting in my chair," said the Mama bear.
"Someone's been sitting in my chair and they've broken it all to pieces," cried the Baby bear.
They decided to look around some more and when they got upstairs to the bedroom, Papa bear growled, "Someone's been sleeping in my bed,"
"Someone's been sleeping in my bed, too" said the Mama bear
"Someone's been sleeping in my bed and she's still there!" exclaimed Baby bear.
Just then, Goldilocks woke up and saw the three bears. She screamed, "Help!" And she jumped up and ran out of the room. Goldilocks ran down the stairs, opened the door, and ran away into the forest. And she never returned to the home of the three bears.

Yes Turk, but you neglected to mention what Goldilocks was driving? It rather spoilt the story for me i'm afraid :( ;D ;D ;)

you want a motor with grills on the windows if the forest of dean has bears in it.

Mate of mine has had 2 of them. first was a 2.0 petrol and it died at about 113k, then he got a 51 plate 2.2dti with 201k on it now on 243k and going strong.
He goes through tires quickly if i remember correctly ;)

The line She went for a 'walk' in the forest may be a bit of a giveaway regarding her mode of transportation. Although I have it on good authority her regular drive is a Renault 'Grande Merde' 2.2dti.

Dunno if it's the same as the grand scenic, but watch out for the rear suspension if you're gonna be carrying any sort of weight.
The scenic has torsion bars instead of proper springs.
They are VERY difficult to change if it breaks (and they do if you carry 400kgs of books in the back then hook up
a 1T trailer :( ) and not cheap.
why not buy another omega? maybe a diesel GLS ?

Thanks for all the input fellers, its a W (2000) plate, and he wants £600, but I'll pay about £500 with haggling, I think.
Would get another miggy estate as a hack, but need the height inside, and also the fact its a "known" car and has only had a 60 yr old owner from new, meaning its not really been abused (much).
Will use the time to get LPG sorted on my miggy!!

good luck with it :y,if its one thats been cared for properly with the niggles taken care of as they have occured should be good for many more miles,at least it won't rust ;D
