I am due an upgrade at the end of the month and I and interested in getting a decent smartphone. I have the E71 at the moment which is ok, but not brilliant.
I do not want any crApple products.
Although I am very tempted by the Galaxy Tab, I fear it would be too big for everyday usage. Plus I think it is just too big for my coat pocket. I have the usual requirements of web browsing, email, games and music etc but I also have a specific requirement of using it for sailing navigation aid. You can get quite cheap e-chart like software for smartphones now and as I have a small boat on which a full chartplotter would be rediculous this is a perfect solution.
So I have whittled it down to 2 phones, Galaxy Wave and the HTC Desire HD. Both similar contracts and price. I would almost lean toward the HTC for the bigger screen which is HD thus affording better clarity on the marine charts but I am wondering if it is any good to use generally.

Up to personal preference really you say you don't want an apple I phone but I didn't really want one but now I have one it does everything I want it too :y
-
Whichever you choose you cannot make an error.
Personally I would choose a HTC.
Not sure about Galaxy but samsung phones always had one problem and that was legibility of the screen under direct sunlight.
Both are great phones, both are pretty big also.
Screen size and resolution can make a big difference if used as navigation software.
I have an old htc diamond which is used only as a gps and is way better than my friends dedicated garmin gps device.

nope.. new samsung models (both galaxy and wave )have amoled screens which is superior than anything around now.. (unfortunately wave 2 is not amoled)
in screen comparison I dont see any phone thats better..

Thanks for correcting me.
I really have no experience with the recent samsung phones
-
Actually the direct sunlight is an important factor I have not thought about :y

Sorry mate but go to a shop, cover the Apple logo on the iPhone 4 and compare it to the other crap available. After the iPhone all other phones feel cheap, hard to use and boring.
Personally I think they are fantastic phones and provided you dont mind buying your music, vids apps etc etc through Apple (I dont mind!!) there really is no other choice.
Never got the whole "I hate Apple" thing that alot of people have.
Its a great product, a real quality experience and in many ways far far ahead of the opposition.
:y
-
I dont hate Apple, I just dont want to be restricted to what they say I can do with or put on my phone :y

Fair enough, I know alot of mates who share the same thoughts

You could always buy an older device running windows mobile (crap to use but can be manipulated relatively easily.)

No, fixed to an Android due to the sailing software. It wont/cant run on Windows Mobile because it's cr@p not suitable

i have the desire..my wife has the desire hd...both excellent phones and i would argue that the desire hd can do everything the i phone 4 can but with a better processor better camera and larger screen..i have played the a galaxy s briefly and found that to be a good phone with a better camera than the desire but not as good as the desire hd
..just checked android market and there are a few marine chart apps :y
-
either galaxy or htc are very good phones..
and not worth to pay for the iphone imo..

Assuming the Galaxy has the Amoled screen and is running Android, then I would go with the Samsung, if it is running BADA, then go for the HTC...

no.. android..
but as a bada user, I can say its robust and failsafe.. I never witness op.system hangs :) ..
to my surprise I could even install complicated network and server certificates on it :o

HTC Desire is not the best in direct sunlight apparently, not sure about the Desire HD.
I say apparently as I've only had it about three months, so I've not seen much 'direct sunlight' as yet.
Apart from the speaker sound being a bit 'tinny', the Desire gets a :y from me.
Although not the HD version, here's a HTC Desire 'direct sunlight' video.

There are a couple of things with which my Desire HD really winds me up.
1 - The battery life is horrendous. On standby it will last forever but once you start to use it, and you will cos it's a smartphone, keep your charger handy :o
2 - All the guff apps that come with it, facemong and twitter to name just a couple, that you can't delete >:(
The screen size/quality does go some way to redemption especially when iphone users are about as they quickly put their phones away ;D

Don't know these work on a Desire HD .. but they certainly made a difference on a "normal" Desire.. might be worth a try ..

my 8 month old uk wave is bada. which is no good for your charts..
the reason i bought it was once all the toys are turned off the battery is good so you can use it as.. a phone.
-
My HTC Desire has been 'off charge' since 8am and after a day of light to medium use the battery is now at 64%.
Running 'JuiceDefender' and 'Advanced App Killer' and I keep account 'Auto Sync' off.

I generally turn off all services, 3G which depletes the battery (only when I need something I turn on) , navigation (thats really a battery monster)
edge is more than enough to take my mails anyway..
nearly it stays 7-8 days until it needs charging :)
so well pleased with it..
but looking at the news next phone will be definitely nokia again as they agreed with microsoft for software..and I dont care if it hangs or not ;D
-
I like to keep all services on on my phone - thats the point of a smartphone. I'm just in the habit of charging it every morning for about a hour...
...I'm an email junkie :-[, the second somebody hits send, I want my phone to alert me I have mail. Sad.
-
I'm in front of a huge and smarter phones whole day anyway ;D ;D :y

Cheers for that. I'll have a go at the battery doubling trick at the weekend when the phone can have a good charge.
