Title: I got pulled over today.
Post by: Del Boy on 18 February 2011, 17:01:55
There I was driving home earlier from a little drive around, anyway Hawkeye (Police Merc Sprinter parked in a lay-by), obviously it was that which picked me up, anyway I get further down the single carriage way, see a police Skoda stopped in a little junction to my left, as I passed him he pulled out.

Anyway he gave it some to catch me up, and then slowed when he got behind me I was on the inside he was on the outside,  then slowed and pulled in behind me. Now I've had a lot of dealing with the Police lately so I thought shit what have I done? Anyway he flashes his lights and I pull over, woman copper (Very nice  :-*) got out and said your van is coming up as untaxed! Anyway I said well it shouldn't do, it's taxed until the end of February, she had a look at the tax disc, and said "it's ok, probably just our system out of date, all your insurance and everything checks out fine".

So then I got let go, my youngest son gets on his phone to check a site which tells you when it's taxed until, it says: Tax Status - Unlincensed since 01-09-2010. I bought the tax, the day after I got the van which was in September from the DVLA office of all places. Anyway I paid by card, which they also charged extra for I might add.

The only thing I can think of is, when I did get the tax they charged me the full amount, plus money for paying by card, but about a week later they said the cashier didn't charge me the £2.50 admin fee, I thought her mistake I'll leave it. Never had a problem until today though. So technically every ANPR camera I drive by will ping and I'll get pulled. Also it needs tax at the end of this month, I'm hoping they don't try and back date it, but if they do it'll be going to court.

They charge for using a credit card but not if you use a debit card.  ;)

If you pay by debit card you can avoid the admin fee. :y

..and the rest sounds about right for a public sector IT system. ::)

.......... and they took their time to get their act together for debit cards. My road tax used to account for one of a handful of cheques I wrote in a year.  ;)

You should have had a tax reminder through the post by now if it runs out end of this month, if not, i'd say contact the DVLA as soon as possible to make sure they're aware you are taxed

Scary stuff. In the world we are heading for you would have been stopped (by surface missile) your vehicle remains scrapped and you thrown in prison.

Your embedded chip would show up forever as a criminal with no right of removal as even the European Court of Appeal has been abolished.

Good old civil servants and they will give themselves a financial pat on the back for genuinely working so hard.

At least they were truthful when they told you why they were pulling you, I half expected when you mentioned that your boy was checking on his phone, that the tax was up to date and the reason for pulling you was a load of bull..

..as I suspect a lot of pulls are  :-X

That is a very good point, the reminder should be with you, if not I suspect they will want to charge you from September and the van is not SORN...... :( :-/ :-/

I suspect it is a wheel clamp for untaxed / un-sorned cars.

Back in days of yore when paying for your tax by cheque and the amount exceeded the card guarantee....

..... a bounced cheque resulted in a tax disc being declared void by DVLA.  When the ability by Police to check PNC with the earliest of info from DVLA, there was a marker placed against the car reg asking for disc seizure and return to DVLA.  And the car driver getting nicked for no tax.

As things have moved on LOTS since this time, could be a similar scenario as the 'admin' fee is still outstanding and, on the day of the stop, upto date info from DVLA was not available....

sending a reminder out by post is not guaranteed to everyone though dont forget, this is just a service they provide to as many people they can so you may not necessarily get one

as you've shown on an ANPR as not having tax then its possible they have it as voided, meaning you're still in possession of a tax disc that you know is legal and appears legal, but to them now its just a piece of paper

the other worrying thing is, if indeed DVLA have your van down as untaxed, you may get a penalty through the post for failing to SORN it. i would ring them immediately if you haven't already done so, and if needs be, produce receipt from the card payment at the time

Van tax costs £110 for 6 months, I got charged £135.00 on the 23rd of September by DVLA Maidstone. So they've had the money and taken an extra £25 for paying by card.

Paid by cheque for mine at the local dvla office it took them four weeks to cash it, better than any credit or debit card i say, :y

Fair enough.   :y  I was referring back to your initial post regarding the 'admin fee'.

Yes mate I know :y I was just clarifying the £25 extra, do you think they would void it over the £2.50? Saying that it has come up taxed before because I checked, and that letter was ages ago now  :-?

£25 was for paying by card, but thinking no it wasn't. Actually, I did get a new log book that's what the £25 was for. The £2.50 is the extra for the card  :-[ Yes I feel thick now, but anyway, that's the only thing is can be is £2.50.
