Saw the company Quack again today... Happy that the movement is now much better but won't let me back to work until I've got that movement with no painkillers in my system.
Signed me off for another month :o :o Although if I've been off the painkillers for 7 days and feel better he'll reconsider letting me back before.
TBH, my short return to work and the resultant relapse has really knocked my confidence and I'm not going to be pushing to go back this time. If it's better I'll go see him but only if I'm 100% confident.
Just so fed up with it all... And to top it all off, the place that did the MOT work on my car have introduced a rattle/vibration which is driving me potty... I'll be popping back in there this week ::)

Sorry to hear that Paul, how long do you get before your company starts thinking about an alternative positions? ie driving a desk....Been there..... :(
-
Lots of time on your hands is only a good thing if you have loads of money and good health to make good use of it ime.
Otherwise, it can be tedium. Had 10 weeks off after major surgery (to my leg - where else!) in 1988, got so bored I ended up cleaning a century of grime of the bricks and repointing the whole house, and of course, did further damage.
Consultant threatened to amputate if I didnt promise to go home, sit down, and watch TV for at least a month. ;D ;D
Hope it clears up soon for you LD, there are some around who would love the chance to sit about doing nothing, and play the system etc. but for someone who,s obviously a worker........ :y

Thankfully, because I don't normally take time off, they are being very understanding :y
I've been put onto the Ill health Policy which will expire in July... If I haven't returned to full duties by then (or there's no sign of it) then I'm Medically retired, although re-deployment is offered as a first option.
Thankfully I have enough sick pay entitlement to see me past then so just have to wait it out. When I do return it will most likely be reduced hours or light duties for a few weeks
-
Even if its offered, not everyone can take to driving a desk. I tried it - had the job title, status etc, reasonable salary - hated every minute of it, checked the time on the clock every 5 minutes. Jacked it and went back grafting, until I couldnt do it any more. Then they sacked me. ::) ;D

That is a good length of time.... :y Medically Retired is something I keep getting told / threatened with, though not been off for a long time for 4 years. :)
I take little notice of the vailed threats, having a disability, that I did not have, brings some security and they know it. Company director is fully behind me, some years ago I was given a desk job, but it soon drove me up the wall so I now have a compromise, still a lot of time in front of a computer but some real work, supposedly protected I have never been so busy..... ::) ::) ::)
-
As I found out, having a disability doesnt necassarily give much protection. They can dismiss you if - your not capable of doing your job, and they can demonstrate that they have made all reasonable efforts to find you another job within the company.
I was instantly dismissed after 20 years.
They didnt go about it the correct way though so, I won my case at tribunal. Trouble is, I have no legal way of getting the £15,000 I was awarded by the tribunal. :'(

Agreed, and been there with the desk job, now have a compromise... :y Most people in my situation are on long term incapacity benefit, it is my choice not to be so, i am able to do my Job, but have bouts of longish terms of sickness... :( I now work with disabled children and am in my element at sorting out, at the moment schools, for the benefit of my young people....... :y :y

Sounds like very worthwhile/ rewarding work Mike. :y

It is, I love my Job.. :y The problem is that I have a good reputation, as a result I have people expecting me to sort out more and more problems, seems I am Superman... :-[ :-[ Been working today for a London situation, getting sucked in......Long story and Yes I am a Social Worker.... :y
-
I had sort of guessed you were in that line of work. ;)
Sounds like you are to a certain extent a victim of your own success. Perhaps they should get you to train others up to do it your way, so a lot more can also end up with a good reputation. :y
LD - sorry for the thread hijack. :-[ ::)
-
Sorry LD just found out about your back troubles, easy for me to say I know, but this advice still holds good,Don't let it get you down, just keep smiling through it all :) :y :y
-
Thanks Cliff :y :y
This is bloody ridiculous though... Just emptied the boot of my car (not been done since I did my back in so had all the winter weather gear in it) and re-loaded with stuff for the upcoming meet as I was feeling pretty reasonable this morning... Less than an hour, no heavy lifting and in agony again :'( :'(
Time for another dose of painkillers I think ::) ::)
-
Been long and drawn out this one :'(
I know when I was suffering with my chest, I'd think it was fine, try a little work, and set it off again.
Rest, rest and more rest seem to be the order of the day.

Yes to all!
Been long and drawn out because I tried to go back too soon... Like the Dr said, I now need to get full movement without painkillers before he'll let me back. Trouble is, like you say, it feels fine until you start to do something :(
-
You have got it bad LD! :( :( :( :( :(
Nothing worse, so I hope you start feeling a lot better soon! :y :y :y :y
-
TBH, It sounds like the help of a very good consultant/ specialist may well be required, which might involve going private. A "normal" bit of back trouble would be well on the way to getting better by now imo. :-/

Unfortunately my job isn't the best for a weak back... Once rested again I'm confident it'll get better (as are both the Doctors I've seen and the Chiro) :y
I just need to remember that when it feels better I need to give it another week-10 days before I start doing more normal stuff ::)
-
Get well soon,
you have some boxes to lift for me this week :P
-
Hope time cures your back Paul. At least you work for a large company who can pay you enough sick pay to live on. We're only a small firm, i know some of the rates my gaffer gets barely cover the wages & diesel so only get SSP & no other jobs for me to do. I'm still ok & on container work only though.
Hopefully your relatively young age & fitness will see you through, although i know back problems don't discriminate. I sometimes forget i'm 48 (nearly) not 28, it's bound to all start falling apart now!!!
REST UP!!!!!!! :y
-
As Amigo says, I find mine is no longer usually better in a couple of days. I also find with age that much more screws me up - even silly things like someone adjusting my chair at work.
-
Unfortunately I am starting to realise that I'm not as healthy as I used to be and being rather unfit doesn't help much either :-[ :-[
Still... Hopefully we're getting a Pup later this year (depending on when our friends breed theirs) so my fitness will definitely improve ::) ::)

You have my total and absolute sympathy .
I'm suffering severe back trouble just now and attending Chiropractor for manipulation and acapuncture .
I've never had back trouble but will be a lot more sympathetic to sufferers in the future .
I sincerely wish you well with a speedy recovery .

And to you :y
Did you do it doing something as silly as me? Lifting the Teapot?
One thing I have learnt though... Must give it plenty of time, even after you think you're fine ;)

Some simple physiotherapy does help.
I was on silly strength pain killers for 3 months roughly when I had my fall.

Been there with the sore back I was born with a deformed lower vertibrate(crap speller).
When I was 20 the doctor told me to give up the joinery or i'd be in a wheel chair by the time I reach 50
I find sitting doing nothing is more painfull then keeping active mind you the tramadol helps ::) ::).
God ive love to have a pain free week but nothing can be done.
the guys at work call me the smartie tube ;D ;D

How correct you are ....
You know I was raking some tree twigs off the front lawn three weeks ago and later that evening I was in agony. Last week it gradually went away and then yesterday I lifted two 40Kg bags of coal and pulled the other side of my lower back.
I had an appointment with the Chiropractor penned in for today so when I arrived and said it's fixed but I've got another wee problem he just shook his head .
At 6'5 it would seem that my back is prone to strain when slightly stooping and I just have to be aware of that to avoid future problems.
Ho hum ..... ::)

As I said to the Doctor on Monday, the relapse has really knocked me for six and I'm not at all confident doing anything physical at the moment :(
Time will heal though :y :y
