>:( Getting sick of bloody virgin media and it's crappy internet service,it runs slowly EVERY weekend ,when i complain i get the same old guff about "peak traffic times" worst of all i'm paying £37 a month for this "service", then the sods have the nerve to offer me an upgrade for a one off payment of £ 30 >:( anyone reccommend a better provider ?

How much more of your contract have you got to go?
Keep calling them each time it is poor so there is a record against your customer number. Give them some stats each time like Speedtest.net.
Then you can politely try saying you have been looking elsewhere and you don't want to leave them but xxxyyy offers........you may find they do the upgrade for nowt. What is the upgrade? A line in data done by a techie at a desk or does it involve a house visit? they would be mad to lose you for that £30. Costs more than that to win a replacement customer.

Which service are you on, and how much do you download & upload generally?
Anything under the 50Mb service is very heavily traffic shaped at various times of day based on your downstream & upstream usage - it's very easy to end up with your traffic shaped down to single digit speeds.
50Mb is only shaped based on your upstream (don't get me started on that one!) - which is better than the others if not ideal.
Oh and where do you live? Mine varies from 50MB (weekdays) to ~25MB (Sunday evenings seem worst).
How much speed you get from any alternatives mostly depends on how far you are from the exchange - if you live in the wrong place you might end up with 0.5MB no matter what time of day ;D

If you're on virgin cable, then there are no alternatives :.(
If you are on BT line broadband, then I'd recomend Plusnet's business service (tell them you're selling stuff online if they ask about what business).
business broadband is on a 20:1 contention ratio instead of 50:1 for home use (so you share your internet speed with 20 other business users, instead of 50 houses).
costs me £32 a month for unlimited (proper unlimited - no "traffic shaping", or slowdown) and up to 8mb (which is about 1.5mb usually).

It just means paying £99+VAT to have a BT (or LLU) line connected to your house and whatever line rental is a month (£15?) :D (And there's no guarantee what speed you'll get over that copper ADSL - but BT are obligated to provide a voice circuit where at all possible, IIRC)
Suddenly the price of Virgin seems more attractive ;D

virgin cable (in my limited experience) is at least 5 or 6 times faster than BT landline broadband (whatever it's called), and potentially 10-20 times faster.
depends what you;re using it for, I s'pose.
browsing probably no difference, streaming or peer-peer definite difference

If its Virgin media it seems odd you are getting issues at weekends, I have no issues at all and am also ex staff.
are you connecting wired or wireless?
If you are wireless ensure your MTU is set to 1450 :y

Hi everyone,I,ve the same problem only with Orange,suffered slow speeds for quite some time but put it down to my cheapo desk top. Anyway got a laptop for xmas,fully loaded with all the goodies (don,t know what half of them are for) but got the same kind of speed,about 1.5 mbs but last week it bottomed out at 1.65 kbs,bloodly useless.
I phoned talk talk my phone line provider to check for any line faults,all ok. So then phone orange,customer services tried to fob me off,but I insisted to talk to someone who could sort the problem. Got to talk to someone in the brains dept,he
phoned me back to explain that BT had DOWNGRADED my line at their exchange to save them some space?.He would sort it,and I would notice improvement within 48 hrs.ell itshot up to 8.1 next day,but is back at 1.8,I think that I shall be soon looking for a new broadband supplier.

just upgraded to virgin 50mb unmetered broadband.
whooooo whhooooo lightning fast,
have to have it that way when i have my kids here with their ps3, my ps3, pc and laptop running at once lol.
