Title: System Tools Virus
Post by: Elite Pete on 27 February 2011, 18:14:02
I've just had the System Tools Virus on my PC and it was a pig to get rid of. I've got AVG as my Anti-Virus and that didn't stop it but doing some reading and the Mcafee is no good as well so just be careful ;)

Not the first time you've had a virus on your tool I'll wager.

Had to sort this mendacious little app out a couple of nights ago on a friend's PC - it's very similar to the Security Tool download.  It took a bit of finding as the app hides itself away, but by booting up in safe mode with networking, then rip out the executable in Explorer (named jdaacjk06300) and some associated .pf files seemed to do the trick for me.  :)

Strange the laptop has got exactly the same thing today. Affects the wife's log in but not mine (I wonder what she's been looking at :-?).
Still trying to get rid of it now.

I had that a couple of weeks ago . I Googled it and there were several methods of removing ,one inc a very good video but I just couldn't get rid of it.
I eventually went into Safe Mode and reset back a couple of days and that fixed it.
Had no problem since , but you're right it was a little swine.

Time to recommend getting Avast.  It seems to stop everything that is throw at my PC and it uses fewer system resources than AVG which appears useless against port scan attacks.

You can get it off www.download.com  :y

some of the pc's i look after have been nothing but trouble with AVG lately, things seem much better with Avast.

If you want me to take a look, just drop it round (just need base unit, no screen  / mouse / keyboard etc)

Been using it on all ours for a while now and it seems fine, not too obtrusive, updates come in via windows update and seems to catch drive by installs as they happen.
Best of all it's a freebie. :y

I moved over from Symantec to MS SE at the beginning of the year.  It's been much less resource hungry and coped fine with the usual wandering round the Internet that I do.

I must be one of the very few who actually renewed the norton which was pre-loaded. £40 for a year and it's been great.

I use that too, on mine and my wifes computer...  She still managed to pick up the system tools virus...

Easy way to get rid of it is...

Step 1.  Get hold of a program called RKill.com http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.com

Step 2.  Download Malwarebytes Anti Malware (free version).  http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Malwarebytes-AntiMalware/1186760019/1

Step 3.  Restart the computer in safe mode WITH networking.

Step 4.  Install Malwarebytes, launch and update.  Run a quick scan.

Should sort the problem...

The problem is system tool isn't really a virus. It's a program designed to panic the user into thinking they have an infected computer and then divulge their credit card details to try and remove it. Therefore it doesn't matter which AV program you've got.

In my case it attacked my wife's account on the laptop but left mine untouched so I was able to use task manager on my account to stop the program running and then used malware bytes to remove all traces of it.

If we didn't all run with administrator priviledges, this would not happen. This is not a virus, its a piece of malware that spreads via social engineering.

Problem solved.

Will this bridge be completely bug-free, as my computer is? ::)
