I have two petrol stations within a five minute drive, asda and an independent. The price of both petrol and diesel has always been within a couple of pence at both. Since the price of oil has rocketed (say the last month) the independent has put his prices up by 5p. Asda has kept it the same. The forecourt is virtually empty and he tells me, if it carries on, he will have to close.
Every cloud has a silver lining.....for someone.

Of course they will win, they play on human nature. Sorry as I feel for the independent guy, I still buy my petrol at asda. ;D

Yep, the big guys can hold out that little bit longer, then, when they have no competition left, you'll be screwed. ;)

If only the Asda near my work would sell LPG....

I thought this was going to be a thread about us Omega owners having an opportunity to get rid of our gas-guzzling cars, seems I had STMO all wrong ::)
-
Tesco near to us is more expensive than anywhere else. Greedy Bas*ards.... >:( >:(
-
Thankfully they still have it right in Spain with the price of fuel being pretty much the same everywhere. Two supermarket chains have started the 5 cents a litre off if you spend 50 euros or more milarky. Thin end of the wedge.
My nearest station is 5 miles away and the next after that is 25 miles. Nearest offer supermarket 40 miles! It would be grim for our rural community if the local guy closed.

I am a poor, misunderstood soul. ;D

It would be grim, I agree. But rural garages in England are no more than thieves. They know they've got you by the bowlocks so they charge what they like. Supply and demand of course, but providing a community service they are not.

I thought this thread was going to tell us how to profit from oil.... Sadly disappointed :( :-/ ::)

Yes Mo, I find it difficult to be sympathetic tbh, it's supposed to be about competition, currently the competition seems to be who can fix the price highest, price fixing being illegal surely?

Rural garages arent necassarily greedy, they cant buy fuel at the prices supermarkets buy it at, so they cant sell it as cheap.
Our local garage closed several years ago (and it used to sell LPG), I know the owner quite well and he told me that Asda were selling petrol cheaper at the pumps than he could buy it wholesale. ;)
-
Local Tesco to me say they do a price check within a 6 mile zone and aim to be the cheapest for fuel..
5 miles away is a total garage and it's 5 pence cheaper than Tesco at all times.. I do remind Tesco of their price check policy as often as possible.
If Tesco was 10p cheaper than anywhere i still wont buy fuel from them or any other supermarkets..
I hate Tesco's with passion...

But they manage it in Spain. The government have an input as they quite rightly realise that"so called competition" would just end up with a two tier system. Supermarkets and less and less but more expensive ordinary garages everywhere else. Sometimes I think Britain is fixated on competition on stuff like petrol. Next all the rural shops will close as the supermarkets undercut them.

I think its probably a lot to do with big business donating to parties and having very highly paid/influential lobbyists in parliament and elsewhere.
Our system is utterly corrupt imo. :(

the first people to moan about the loss of their local high street shops, handy local garage etc are those that moan its a bit more expensive as they climb into their £50k range rover and set sail for tescos ;D ;D
5p on a loaf of bread, packet of fags, or a pint and most of us wouldnt notice - i buy 20 fags nearly every day but i couldn't tell you what i pay - £6 something? with fuel its so price sensitive because the price is put up on huge signs you can see from the road so 5p in the scheme of things is nothing but it'll drive people to go 10 miles down the road to save 1/20 th of a pound per litre - mad - personally i'd much rather have a local garage and pay a fraction more than rely on big supermarkets - our local garage closed a few years ago and i still find it a pain in the rear having to make a 10mile round trip to fill up :(

I agree, I endeavour to support local traders first and foremost.

Likwise. Our local garage used to sell LPG.Now I have an LPG car the nearest staion is 10 miles away. It would have made life so much easier if it was still there.
The proprieter used to take great pleasure in watching people walk up to his pump with a gallon can to fill up for their lawnmower - "where do you fill your car up with petrol?" "Sainsburys of course, they,re cheaper than you"...."well break of to sainsburys and fill your lawnmower then" and if necassary frogmarched them off the premises. ;D
I saw one bloke ask to use the airline one day, he was told he would be charged " a pound per pound. "its free at sainsburys" "break of to sainsburys then"......a bit of a character. ::) ;D
He was also the quickest driver I have ever seen on public roads when he thought conditions allowed. Iirc he was the first British formula Ford champion in 1971.
