If so how do they afford it?
My game was about 5 or 6 times that amount and I get a handfull a year*

People usually start when they are young/stupid/invincible etc. By the time they realise its smelly, disgusting and very bad for their health they are addicted to one of the most addictive substances known to man. Stopping isnt usually easy. ;)
-
...."they are addicted".... Which, when i smoked and was addicted myself, gave me the reason to give up, because ....."i was addicted"..... >:(
-
i used to smoke and i can tell you it aint easy giving up.
you start in school cos its ''cool'' and before you know it youre waking up at 4.30am to go for a snoke.
horrible habit and if the government really wanted to help they'd ban it and give everyone free patches but they wont do that cos they make too much money from selling them >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(
-
people allways go on about smoking, but smoking dont get you put in prision like drinking every night and and going to far, that is nearly £6 a pint,
and pubs banning smoking has killed more that half pubs off.
if they ban smoking as law were will they get there money from??? Tax+
more people die from engine smoke and dog farts than smoking, if you want to live for ever dont eat dont drink dont breath or some one will say it will kill you.

Totally agree with above, will all the non smokers be happy to pay massively increased taxes if tobacco is banned ?
-
nicotine is similiar both in molecular structure and behaviour on brain receptors , so must be accepted as same class with "others" >:( >:(
and we pay for it >:( >:( >:(

Strongly suspect we have the "defending the indefencable" smokers reply here tbh.
And yes, obviously i am happy to pay extra Tax to keep you alive. :-*

Not at all. Just remember smokers/drinkers/drivers pay massive tax. If you ban any of them they will need to raise the cash through general taxes payable by all. Plus the smokers/drinkers contribute far more than they use, there life expectancy is shorter so less pension to pay etc etc. :) Non smokers should be more than happy that certain people want to pay more tax and die early, they help to maintain our NHS keeping people employed, why shoot the golden goose as it where.

I smoked from around 15 up to being 40. Giving up was one othe hardest things I've done, I had loads of half hearted attempts to do so. Although I'd love a cigar every now & then I know I couldn't because I'd soon be back on 20 + a day. But I don't harp on to smokers about not smoking near me etc. :y
-
i smoked heavily for years, and when i decided to give up i went to see a hypnotherapist*. £40 later and i havent smoked since. excellent. a few of my friends went to see the same guy, all gave up straight away. marvellous. money well spent, and if we're talking about the monetary cost of smoking, well i saw the benefits of my £40 investment within a week.
(*not to be confused with a hypnotist!)

Dead right! :y :y :y :y
That is why smoking will not be banned! ::) ::) ::) I know a few years ago it was said that tobacco revenue brought in £11 billion, but only £4 billion of that had to be spent by the NHS to tackle smoking related illnesses.
A result I'd say for us non-smokers!! :D :D :y :y :y

I used to smoke about 20 a day for close on 20 years. Then I had a health scare that I'll tell you all about.
One day (at the age of 36) I was talking as normal to my wife when I suddenly got the most fierce pins and needles in my left forearm along with a lack of movement. I started rubbing my arm and my wife asked me what was wrong. When I tried to reply I found that all that came out was a jumbled mash of sounds with no relation to the words I was trying to get out.
Fortunately for me I happened to be sitting right by the phone and with my right hand was able to dial 999 and pass the phone to my wife.
I think it took 8 minutes for the paramedic to arrive and by that time I had my speech back and the pins and needles had moved into my stomach, then into my leg while talking to the paramedic before finally disappearing altogether. Diagnosis was that I had a Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA) also known as a mini stroke and I've got to tell you it was the most frightening thing that's ever happened to me.
Needless to say that it gave me the motivation and the will power to give up smoking and I am now a completely smoke free zone. :y

Bloody Hell, I nearly started again after watching that! ;D ;D ;D

if you read you will find that people that have stoped smoking arethe worst at making other people to stop smoking,, you have hart attack or coffing up blood. but the fact's are that more people that drink & smoke go after there 100 birthday, were as the health die in there 40-60,, so who is trying to get rid of who. we make the choise to smoke or drink not other people,,, every one is a follower of life, some one dose somthing for the first time then more follow.
-
Im an ex smoker, but I still believe that adults have the right to choose how they wreck their health/ kill themselves, whether its by smoking or any other method. I have always been sceptical about the whole passive smoking argument as well.
It is though an undeniable fact that smoking causes lung cancer, heart disease etc. and it is highly likely that you will die sooner if you smoke, than if you dont.I have seen several members of my own family die in their early 40,s from cancers caused by smoking.
Freecall, if you want to smoke, its up to you mate. But if you think it isnt doing you any harm, you are kidding yourself, your living in denial. ;)

The facts are actually the complete opposite of that. There will be exceptions to the rule, and people will sometimes use those exceptions as justification to carry on smoking.
Imo there are a few genuine reasons to smoke imo, which dont involve lying to yourself.
1. Addicted and havent yet summoned the strength to conquer it.
2.Aware of the fact it may well kill you before your time, but having thought about it you genuinely dont care.
3.cant think of a third. :D

Standard answer from anyone trying to defend the undefendable - blame it on someone else, then make out the cost is negligible ;)
I would certainly find better uses for that £140pa you waste on games....

Haven't smoked for probably 18 years, have no plans to start again, however if someone handed me a cigarette I could probably smoke it before I even realised.
Each to thier own as I couldn't really care to be honest, If people want to smoke I have no problem with it and I certainly wouldn't complain if they stood next to me smoking.

Indeed not a single sign of any Iron Oxides.

Mine are closer to £7 pound a pack which is expensive but not as bad as the current price of my preferred smoking material.
-
This is a topic that really in my opinion has no end....
My Grandad smoked Park Drive all his live but didn't pass away because of smoking....
But to the question... Smoking is very expensive so why do it?
Because they perhaps want too... the same reason we go and fill our Omega's up with fuel and the person filling up behind you with there Corsa 1.2 that does 56mpg thinks "Why on earth do they have a car with such a big engine?" :-?
-
somebody previously mentioned about it being the nicotine thats no good for you.
can i just point out that nicotne is actually good for you. whilst being addictive it does relax.
it is TAR that is the bad part of cigarettes. so do sa i do.... just get addicted to nicotine patches instead ;D ;D ;D ;D

At last a voice of reason & from a non smoker. I buy smuggled tobacco because our government have to over tax us on smoking, alcohol & petrol to recoup thier break ups.
OK. I'll give up smoking, drinking, sell the Beastie & the Cortina to save the carbon footprint & buy a some daft leccy hybrid just to to keep you whinging idiots happy.
Be careful what you wish for. If we all gave up what you think we should your taxes would increase bigtime as the goverment recouped from your income/council tax so stop sitting in judgement, shutup & THINK.
I'm sick of condescending know it alls. I'm sure some of you are starting to get sick of me too if you hav'nt already.
FINE. This forum has declined into such ridiculous posts & for me is becoming tiresome. I don't go out any more because i can't smoke & now it's here too. No wonder i hav'nt signed up for any meets this year. I don't meet such crap on my classic car forums.

Hang on a minute Guy, pick up the toys and take a big, deep breath!
Nobody is saying that you shouldn't smoke... Just asking the question why?
I haven't answered but will now...
1) Because I want to!
2) Because I enjoy it!
3) Because I don't want to give up yet!

Not sure the Heated Debate Area is a good idea... In my opinion the General Car Chat is not a great idea this is an Omega Forum not a Skoda/Escort/BMW Forum or whatever... Creating a heated area could end up in tears for some... perhaps joining a Boxing Club maybe an idea eh??
Guys a quick tempered ode bugger but cuddly on the inside :-* :-*

haha yeah fair point daz... maybe a disclaimer saying that if it spills in to off-screen violence OOF wont be held responsible?? ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
Be careful what you wish for. ....
Sage words indeed. I used to smoke. I could have given up driving fast cars, drinking alcohol, flying gliders, etc. instead. They all risk damaging either me and/or the environment depending on who you believe. Right now I can honestly say I don't miss smoking at all. If it had been one of the others, I know I would be pining for it big time, so, from that respect, smoking was a waste of money and an unnecessary health risk for me.
However, back to being careful what you wish for. All of the above are under threat from the increasingly prescriptive state in which we live, not to mention many other people's pastimes. Ask anyone who used to enjoy hand gun ownership, or hunting with dogs. I try (and don't always succeed) to respect the path others have chosen to take through life, even if it's not my cup of tea. You never know who'll be next up against the wall.
First they came for the communists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.

£6 a pack - unless it lasts all week it is a lot of money.
Where did I criticise beyond the financial side?

The average Omega smoker will, most likely, spend more on ciggies than petrol in a week, month, year etc...tis their choice...... :y
I am one of the lucky ones, Lung cancer at 44 and survived, so far....... :D :D :D well if I don't then the option is.... :'( :'( :'(

Lung cancer is one of the risks, along with many others. I know that, as does every other smoker :y
Of course... They have already proven that cancer is genetic. If the gene isn't present then you won't get it ;)
I have every sympathy with ex/non smokers and try to be considerate... I don't even smoke in my own car with them unless they have given me the OK :y
I know it's a disgusting habit, creating smells etc, but I enjoy it :y

Saw it in some documentary years ago... It was a gene that doesn't necessarily show for long periods or something :-/ Although I can only find reference to Breast/Prostate/Colorectal/Ovarian cancers online so perhaps I'm confused :-[ :-/
I do know that said gene increases the likelyhood of any cancer though.
That said, I must get my head around the idea of giving up... The extra money would come in handy :y I still put more money into the LPG tank than I do into my lungs but the extra money would be nice... Especially if we both gave up :y

i generally dont comment on such things as cancer as theyre very emotional subjects (my nan died of it and the images are haunting!!!!!)
but my understanding was that all males have cancer gene inside them but to suffer from cancer it has to be triggered by something for instance by smoking, constant inhalation of dust particles in certain jobs etc????

We have moved away slightly though from the Smoking is Expensive question.... Children Martin are expensive but we don't notice it do we? a friend of mine always seemed loaded with money when we had the girls and he had no children. Then he had a daughter too and is always complaining on how much money they cost and he cant afford now to run his brand new BMW...... we get used to spending the money out until will dont notice it or something else takes a back seat if that makes sense :)
To Cancer.
My Dad has Cancer a good friend of mine also has cancer we all know someone how has been hit by this horrible thing, but were they all smokers???

My wife has had cancer twice.
With the luck of the chap in the big seat, looks like we are looking not too bad now, thanks very much.
And she has never smoked a one in all her life.
Firsthand.
But her dad smoked rollys all his days.
For him, amongst other things, cancer of the blood.
Bit of a bugger that was when it eventually happened..... :'(

I was more of a social smoker really could take it or leave it, but when Mrs Loo knee packed in so did I. She saved the money that we spent on fags only then did we realise how much we spent, when you can actually see it there in money over the year that could take you and your family on a good holiday.....
But who are we to judge someone else?
I like my Pink Frilly Underwear am I bothered??

That's how a mate of mine did it, he threw all the cash he would have spent on cigs into a jar. It bought him a pc after a few months and he hasn't smoked since.

My best mate had a bit of a scare, probably not caused by smoking, but certainly not helped by it. His missus also put his 'Fag Money' in a jar, and that money is now his 'treat moeny' - buying himself little luxuries, and funding our Friday nights out in town.
It amounts to a reasonable amount of cash, but then as he says, his rollups where his treat/luxury before his illness....
-
I'll never be able to give up smoking. I might have the willpower but the craving would never leave me, stuff living with that. I enjoy my roll ups & agree it's an expensive unsociable habit & an incredible health risk but you can die of anything anytime so i choose to take my chances. I spend all day on the road, if another truck hits me i could be history.
I used to banger race, very few deaths ok but you get the idea, jogging causes all sorts of damage due to repetitive calf/heel damage. I don't have a sweet tooth & am doing really well lately moderating my food intake, volume & matter. I could do with a little more cyclig & walking but i still get more excercise than those who only leave thier desk to visit the water cooler & i breathe fresh air all day every day & night, windows open all year round.
That said although i'll never be an ex smoker i do wish i'd never started ::)
-
It took me 25 years to stop Guy. I had many times when I thought I could never do it. That first one with a cup of tea in the morning........
Never think about it now tbh. ;)

I actually don't mind the smell of roll ups not much smoke from them.

True. I respect my non smoking friends house rules but they love my curries so i'm usually allowed to smoke in one room, usually the kitchen with window open.
They have said that with roll ups the smell's gone next day whereas tailor mades linger longer.
Tailer mades have saltpetre to keep them alight & other stuff that rolling tobacco does'nt. I know i still should'nt do it though! :D

i used to say things like ''i know i shouldnt'' as if to kind of get away from the whole ''you shouldnt smoke'' conversation
if you wanna smoke mate you jolly well smoke ;)
i still have the occasional deck of 10 when im p*ssed lol

Sorry to you smokers, but IMHO its a disgusting, smelly, harmful, and totally anti-social habit (unless you are also a smoker, and like huddling out in the cold and snow outside a pub puffing for all you are worth to get back into the warm again) and I find it completely off putting in a woman, and brown fingers and yellowing teeth with ashtray breath a complete turn-off, even if you have a stunning figure and fascinating personality!!
Sorry...........................rant over, i'm going now.
-
My mate finally decided to give up smokingby using the patches and an nasal spray type thing. He's now more adicted to the nasal thing than he was the actual cigarettes, he does want or need a smoke but get this, it costs him £20 a day for the inhaler and he has to ensure he has enough of them with him if he's going away anywhere! He now understands the meaning of addiction lol!
And heres a belter! The new term for those standing outside having their smoke is "Snoutcasts" ;D ;D ;D
And yes, I am a smoker, lol! There, I've said. Its out now and I feel better, lol!

You are 100% right. It's a ridiculous waste of money, health risk & downright unsociable habit. That said your opinion is hardly new. You've got what you want. We can now no longer go to pubs, restaraunts, hotels & those in offices/buildings are outlawed at work (i'm not, i'll smoke in my truck whatever...break 'em) but i hope you & those who share your opinion are happy now you've put many pubs out of business, i hope you feel good about that. ::)
-
i feking hate walking behind a smoker, what they breath out, and you breath in as you walk behind is all the crap they exhaled, i often just stop and wait to get some distance between me and them, or I walk faster in front.
-

Well of course we paid for the tabs so we'll keep the good stuff for us ;D ;D ;D
-
I'm nearly 48 & smoked before some of you were born. So much has changed. Pubs smelt of pubs, just walking past as a smoker you could pick it up. Respectable hard working family men took their families to the pub on a sunday lunch, noon til 2pm back then, the kids were happy with coke & crisps in the car, down a few pints then drive home for roast dinner, (please spare me the drink/drive/kids in car comment) Quite right but i've heard them over & over, all i'm trying to say is some of us come from another time so try to bear with me if i get a little impatient. I don't drink drive ever nor do i condone it but i get a tad miffed when after smokers being outlawed in pubs, cinemas, eateries, work Tunnie even wants us to stop smoking in the open air???
I know it's unpleasant for non smokers but FFS you've owtlawed 90% of our lives, be happy with what you've got & stop being so damn selfish! :(
-
Tunnie even wants us to stop smoking in the open air???
To be honest, yes. In the States, smoking is banned with 100meters (if i remember correctly) of any hotel lobby/office doors with an over-hang. Which means in NYC most of the streets its banned.
I was in Tokyo last year, again, smoking on the street is banned, there are special areas on the streets outside shops, where people can smoke, but its strictly enforced. But its contained, which is great. You can walk down the street and not suddenly inhale the smoke from someone in front /passing you.
Hated coming back to London streets trying to dodge it all again, sorry Guy its not an attack on you, many of my friends smoke, but I personally want it banned in public.
-
I have to say, our local pub (which I don't visit very often, for the following reason) always used to be full of guys watching the footie on a Saturday afternoon. Most smoking, all drinking, and not just the odd pint.
Nowadays it's tumbleweed. The odd die-hard propping up the bar but I do wonder where all those punters are now? Probably in their own living rooms, smoking, drinking and watching the footie. Their kids are probably sitting on their laps instead of in the pub garden playing with the other kids and getting some exercise and fresh air. It does make me wonder what has been achieved by banning smoking in pubs?
I suppose the natural reaction of our leaders to this would be that we need to ban smoking in our own homes next? :-X
Kevin

I can see where Tunnie is coming from as I now find the smell horrible and often think did I smell like that .... I know its only 2 months since I stopped aswell ;) ::) ::)
-

That's fair enough. For the purposes of argument I think motorcycles are dangerous and noisy and I want them banned in public.
Doesn't matter a jot to me if they ban both. I currently neither smoke nor ride. ;)
As said before, though, be careful what you wish for. If you back the current (IMHO) overly prescriptive nanny state you need to be comfortable with what the eventual conclusion might be. One day it'll be a pastime you enjoy that gets canned on the whim of some do-gooder. ;)
Now, how bad an assault is it really to pass a smoker in the street? Any worse than a noisy bike? Would you put up with one to indulge in the other?
Kevin

Absolutely. Its where they draw the line, they might say kit cars are dangerous too...
As it happens bike sales are down, the Yamaha dealer in town where I did my DAS has gone bust, as did the Harley dealer up the road... :(

Firstly to set the record straight i like Tunnie. He's a cracking lad whose done & will continue to do very well for himself. When i was 18 i was rushed into hospital with acute appendicitis, it nearly burst...peretontis....bad news, so we could all die of anything at any time. After a week in hospital some friends bought me clean clothes washed/dried in the usual way. They fricking stank. I had'nt smoked for a week & the "clean" clothes smelt rancid. Not of fag smoke but a really unpleasant ammonia smell, it was horrible.
Point is i know where you non smokers are coming from but you've already changed our lives beyond repair, try to give a little & cut us some slack please.

I was pleased when the smoking ban came in, being tall, in small pubs smoke would always rise to the top, and like you said clothes no longer stink.
However what I did not think/realise, is its wider effect. As the rule stands, I believe your truck cab is now classified as banned for smoking? :-/
I'm never likey to get into someone elses truck, so the do'gooders wanting smoking ban, means people like yourself can not have a quick smoke to ease tensions of London traffic :(
Its odd, I like the smell of a cigar but not cigarette :-/
-
I smoke, and drink a lot, not too bothered when the smoking ban came in, in fact quiet support it, cleaner environments, non smokers get to enjoy there evenings out better, my biggest s pet hate is having to go outside the Pub to smoke, leaving your pint inside cause breaches some Pubs licencing laws, then find on your return that your pints gone walkabout because some dopey Bar person has chucked it!
Just wish they would hurry up and ban Alcohol in Public Places so I drink and smoke outside a Pub in peace.
-
Yup. I should'nt smoke in my cab in case a non smoking fitter has to work on it! I,ve never known a driver to be prosecuted for doing so though. Maybe the police have more constructive ways of spending thier time, they've never bothered me.
To sum up would it be fair to let Landlords decide whether they run a smoking or non smoking pub or differing bars?
I'm sure this way we could keep everyone happy without having to impose our habits/views on eachother? :y
-
....

That sounds a sensible idea ........... obviously why they didn't go along that route. In Bury town centre, before the blanket ban, there was just one pub that was a no smoking pub. This was the pub that was empty, no bugger went in. :-? :-?

IIRC MP`s decided it was legal to smoke in bars.......as long as it`s only the "members" bar at Westminster

I believe they did look into that one, but was ruled out due to potential 'Discrimination in the Work place' ie a smoking Landlord running a Smoking Pub would probably not employ non smoking Bar Person, or the non smoker employee moaning about thier working environment.
I believe in Ireland they've back tracked a bit and have allowed so called smoking rooms in Pubs that meet a certain area or room size requirement.
