I so miss Aberdeen Rowies. :'(
They're like a cross between a pastry and a scone ,flat and round with a salty flavour.
Story told by my Dad ,who came from Aberdeen ,was that they were originally made from the stale or previous days bread with fat and salt added and then gently baked. Delicious with cheese ,jam or best of all Herring and new Tatties....
In all my travels I've never ever found an equivelent anywhere , only Aberdeen.
For more than 15 years I used to go to Aberdeen almost weekly on business and used to bring literally dozens and dozens of them back to Lanarkshire to ex pat Aberdonians ,it got so bad I had to call the one shop I used to order as I cleared it out each time .
I don't think we've got any Aberdeen members have we... ?

The choccy 'knob stands proud and erect in a swathe of indifferent alternatives. :-* :P :P

Mcvities digestives, buttered and then double deckered - dunked in hot sweet tea, laavlee.
Tunocks chocolate tea cakes - not strictly biscuits, but I love them with a cup of tea. Trying to wean myself off them due to developing a belly. ::)

Please please please help me with putting on weight... ::) ::) ::)
-
My downfall Mike is that I drink too much fizzy pop, am a bugga for drinking Diet Coke. If I dont drink pop I lose weight, If I drink it I gain.
Used to be minium 2 litres a day, now is 2 litres in 2 days.
have a 3 litre orage bottle , with some robinsons Lemon Barly water concentrate, and diluted it with 2 lires of R Whites Lemonade, will last me 2 to 3 days, but wont help the weight. Neither will the chocy biccys or sweets.

I remember it well son - when things got down to this level it was only a matter of time before the innocent lyrics would be rearranged to cater for a more imaginative audience. ;D

Boxes of broken biscuits was my favourite, which we bought at the Home & Colonial stores for one! :y :y :y :y
It was always a lovely surprise to find what biscuits you had. It was like a pick & mix of your favourite biscuits :-* :-* :-* :-* 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-)

Aah I remember that very well indeed Lizze - it's just brought back memories of Annie Lennox's corner shop.
Salter weighing scales, Berkel food slickers, sides of proper bacon (covered in stockinette ) vast pieces of cooked ham covered in yellow crumb and lines upon lines of sweetie jars containing treats such as clove rock, brandy/aniseed balls, Army and Navies, sherbet bombs, Riley’s toffee rolls, flying saucers, Victory V lozenges and on and on.
Robbie the Co-Op milkman who was able to carry several pint bottles of milk by their necks between his fingers, Reggie the Baker and the very long trays of freshly backed goods pulled from the back of his electric van and a legion of other traders who brought their wares to the door step.
Memories of a time within a vastly different country.

Indeed Zulu, what lovely memories we can share 8-) 8-) 8-) :y :y
These include the wonderful (to me as a 4 year old, and still to this day!) Sainsbury's, pre-supermarket age, in Tunbridge Wells. With all marble counters, meat hanging up, cheeses, canned, along with packeted foods, in neat piles on them, and the staff in their smart white aprons, plus many things that amazed me as a kid at the time. All long gone in the name of "progress"!! :'( :'( :'( :'(
The floor was also so clean and marble like, with "Sainsbury's" stamped in it at the entrance.

That paints a vivid picture and brings back many memories from childhood Zulu. Particularily of visits to my granny in Sandy Row, where I would be sent to the wee shop around the corner which was just like the one you describe.
The usual reason I was sent as a 6 or 7 year old was to buy ciggys for grannny. 60 gallahers greens was the usual daily order ::).......and some sweets for myself. Also used to get that well known ice cream woman (whose name escapes me) on her bicycle contraption with the big ice cream box on the front. If I,d "been good" I would get bought a "slider".
Happy days and simpler times indeed. :y

trouble is, few people are willing to pay for it and would rather buy the cheap stuff tesco's et al churn out rather than a decent piece of meat - i've had steak from tesco's that literally tasted of nothing :o now when i get a steak its from the local butcher- lesson learned - i fear nowadays kids'll grow up not knowing what an apple or tomato tastes like as independent grocers cant compete with vastly inferior and far cheaper goods :(
-
Agreed. supermarket meat is usually vile. No flavour and its like trying to chew an old bicycle tyre.We use the local farm shop or a butcher a few miles away who has a great word of mouth reputation. The meat of all types tastes like I remember meat used to taste when I was a wee boy. :y

Quite right BJ.
I think many will rue the day that they preferred the out of town centre or the supermarket to the local trader. :(

That sweetie shop was quite renowned A, it got business from far and wide.
The area has changed so much now I can't remember if it was on the Row itself or in one of the streets leading through to great Victoria Street at the Boyne Bridge end.
There was only one place to get ice-cream - Sammy Desano's on the Newtownards Road (although many preferred Fusco's).
The pale yellow delight was kept in 1 gallon stainless steel pails in the cooler counter. They also sold hot peas, which people greedly consumed drenched with salt and malt vinegar.

I remember well one of the many Italian ice cream van operations in the 1950s. "DeMatio's" (I think I spelt that correctly!) were the operator around High Brooms, Tunbridge Wells who played the tune Lily Marlene when touring around in his Austin ice cream van :-* :-* :-* 8-) 8-) 8-)

Just flicking through this thread and the 90M lottery thread.
To use a modern term – this is a no-brainer.
Quite obviously one would fund an intensive advertising campaign in the continuing battle to have prostitution legalised, have free regular Tech 2 investigations for all members, ring-fence finance for a professionally made series of video productions covering the more common aspects of Omega maintenance such as cam belt and do-nut bush changes (all performed by scantily clad females – with one male to cater for the more exotic members of the Forum - and have the darker arts of intimate behaviour - such as cake-sitting - taught to all (not just members of this Forum) who expressed any interest whatsoever. :-* :-* :-* :P :P :y
Seemples
Might nip out to Derbyshire or the coast.
Dug out a picnic blanket - Vodka - Wine - Jaffa cakes -
Got to nip to tesco for squirty cream - sponge cake
Have I missed anything from above?
The sun was out early this morning so hoping it may brighten up again later, if not then it looks like fish n chips or a pub meal, hope we end up having a nice day one way or the other. ::)

The most important thing to add is a generous supply of wet-wipes and some nice soft towells. :-* :-* :y
