Any plumbers on the about? Whats actually required for one of these?
I've been in my flat for 6 months now, feels a lot longer! Just had a full years invoice for Thames Water come in, and its jumped from £28/m to £41/m :o
Just made me realise how much I am paying & I am on the wrong tariff.
£41/m is tad steep considering I live on my own! So rang them up, was told I could significantly reduce my bill (almost half it!) with a meter fitted.
I've looked I don't think I have one, (can't see anything which would resemble it) I can see the water feed coming in under the sink, its like any other house with a water pipe in and a valve to close it.
They said if one could not be fitted I would be put on a special contract, but hoping one can be fitted.
But whats actually required to fit one? Did a bit of research most of them are just propeller based, and just put on the main feed pipe?
Assuming something like this is bolted in?

There is plenty of space for one to be put in, any other special requirements?
My flat is in a 1930's building if that makes any difference :-/

I'm guessing the water meter would be outside your flat if one were fitted. That would probably depend how the building was plumbed, though, and where your supply diverges from the feed into the premises.
Mine is at the stop cock in the manhole cover under the pavement.
But I would say it's a no-brainer to have one. As a single occupant it will almost certainly be cheaper.

Hummm poking around under the sink what I thought the main feed, is not. I can see another stop cock right at the back quite well hidden, can't see how a valve could be fitted there.
On the upside they only put people on a 'single occupancy' tariff if they confirm one cannot be fitted. Not sure if that would be cheaper or not than a meter :-/

A water meter is ideal for a single man such as yourself. And remember ........there is no need to flush every time you take a piss...... :y
Water butts in the garden are a good idea too.... :y

Ahh yess the 'Garden' humm bit lacking in that department!
I only use the dishwasher about twice a week on average, and flushes are skipped sometimes as there is not always a need. It has a 'short' flush feature too, which uses minimal amount of water.
Washing machine only gets about used once a month too ;D

Actually no, I managed to figure it out.
Mobile TV encoders? - No problem
Text TV Broadcast Clusters? - No problem
Slate Broadcasters? - No problem
But I did have to read the manual on the feking washing machine :-[ ;D

I'm with Thames Water.....and asked for a meter to be fitted last year.....as my un-metered bill had got to £340...Blokey turned up to inspect....im on a shared main (bit like your flat) so it was dismissed putting one outside....onto the kitchen....blokey asked where the stopcock was, i said behind the dishwasher.....ahh problem....h&s prevents them from lifting/moving anything.....so his report concluded water meter not suitable. Then got a letter from TW saying my bill had been reduced by 50% to £170 :y
I'm happy with that, washine machine is on about 4 times a week, dishwasher on nearly everyday. And during the summer months I dont care how much water i use watering my veggies :y
So i guess thats what they will do in you case , tunnie ;)

I thought that might be the case, cheers for that :y

Funny this post have just ordered one from anglian water free of charge. The promise with them is if within two years my bill is not cheaper i can resort back to the old method.
Just a thought tho T is my brother lives on his own and has a meter and he pays £98 per half year. :y :y :y

If you're on assessed usage I think you may have to declare things like hoses, swimming pools etc. so's they can bump it up.

I did, years ago.....apparently according to 'blokey' thats the norm......they 1/2 the bill if its uneconomical or against h&s rules to install a meter.....one of his comments was, you will get it half price and you can use as much water as you like ;) :y

You love it Debs :P :-* :-* ;D
In my defence, as I live on my own and I have so many jeans and t-shirts it takes me ages to work my way through them all. I don't have to wear a shirt/tie or smart clothes to work, so just go through the millions of t-shirts I have!

If you get one then you MUST make sure that your insurance covers you for loss of metered water as you are laible for this if there is a failure in the pipework after the meter.
We had a leak coupld of years back and lost well over £1000 worth of water.
Insurance paid up.

If you had a meter fitted the M3 usage would show on your bill.
Water board fit them but they will survey the site (your flat ) on request to give advice.
Genrally you have 1 years grace as to whether to keep a meter once fitted or have it removed if the bills dont reduce.
Any home with an existing meter it wont be removed.
Newer meters are neater than the pic you found.
