Title: New tits
Post by: Nickbat on 03 April 2011, 12:58:15
For the past 10 years or so, my birdbox has consistently been the birthplace of blue tit families. Over the winter, I installed a video camera inside and, this morning, the first nesting material was taken in by.... a great tit. :o

Fascinating to watch them flap their wings and do a sort of dance to get the material to intertwine (at least I think that's the purpose of their actions :-? ).

Looking forward to seeing the eggs and then the chicks.  :y :y

My dad did this a couple of years ago. A couple of blue tits nested in the box and we watched then build the nest, look after the eggs, nurse the chicks and counted them out as they flew the nest. All of them made it out of the box, although the "runt" of the litter was well behind the stronger ones.

It was fascinating to watch day by day, but became a bore when he started taking his "blue tit DVD" everywhere. ;D

How are you lighting the box?

Kevin

We have a pair of great tits that nest every year in an old ceramic water carrier (only one entrance - the spout!). Last year we watched them fly and the runt actually landed on Mrs Varche's head before continuing its journey.

A camera watching inside must be fascinating. :y

Well done Nick it's always nice to see the new recruits. 8-) :y

As an aside, the fragrant mother of an old girlfriend used to refer to these divine little birds as teats. :-?

Unfortunately, due to the location of the box, the cable only goes to the kitchen TV (without a recorder attached) and my PC is on the other side of the house. I'll look into it, though.  :y
