I wanted to get some miles under my
arse belt on the bike, as I have a couple of big trips in next few months. So while weather was nice and following on from thread other day, on Thursday I decided to go over to Church Stretton / Long Mynd area to get some decent miles done in one day.
I wanted to try and cook some camping meal packs in my jetboil which I had not done yet, I tried soup mix in water before, worked fine, but messy!
After a late start I found myself a spot to park up and start cooking:

This was meal I chose:

Added water first to see what level would need to be with pouch in the jet boil....
I sparked it up, got it boiling, popped pouch in and left it for 8 mins.

It actually turned out very nice!

Needed a bit of bread to pad it out, but slow release energy worked well, I could live on them, which is what I would need to do on my trip(s)
Peace was soiled by one of them sport tractors, impressive driving through Narrow gap!

Also another chance to run the bullet camera, as this time it was fully charged, and I wanted to test charging it on the go. It performed really well, I recorded my whole run back with storage space and battery to spare.

Yeah, I'd have found a greasy spoon, personally. :y

Regarding Food.....
1) I'm on a budget, greasy spoon on way up, but cannot afford one every day
2) Doubt i'll find a greasy spoon in Scotland when I want one too..
3) Banana maybe for lunch, but come on, Scotland? Rain? Cold? Err Hot Food? Yes please! ;)

Joking aside a banana is a good idea :y
Not something I considered, and if i see them at a Petrol station as they are often built with supermarkets these days, tis a good idea :y
This test was to see what those meals were like, could i live on them for dinner / snacks. These things have to be tested :)

I did wonder about getting some canned food which is a hell of a lot cheaper and bag it up, but its mess & hassle.

I was going to suggest that ::) ::) when I used to do a bit of walking I used to carry a tin or two of sausages in beans or the breakfast in a can etc, much cheaper.. :y :y

I guess the problem is that you'd need some sort of sealable bag that you can boil. I reckon you need to have Mick Dundee and Kate following you with a different curry each night.

nice trip Tunnie.. :y :y
I like this kind of areas as I'm fed up with buildings and search for an open blue sky.. :)

I have tried tinned food, the problems I found were:
* Storage on the bike, can't take many.
* Weight, they are a considerable weight when there are a few of them
* Mess, this is key after putting food in, jet boil needs cleaning. (so have to bring plate washing stuff
But it is cheaper, not sure I would trust DIY bags of food in boiling water for 10 minutes :-/
-
Get one of those little vac sealers, tin of beans and saus sealed in a thick bag would save you a fortune at those prices.

Not sure if they could take being boiled? :-/
Also not sure how long food would last after being opened then sealed, still good after 10 days? :-/

True, might try it here though, as if one does explode in cooking pot I can pop it in the dishwasher!

Wonder if freezer bags would be man enough to be boiled :-/

Although none of us could kid ourselves that beanz & sausage could be considered finest cousine I used to quite enjoy them on toast, that was till I worked so closely with them. ::) ::)
Just imagine a tinned sausage after it's spent a week or so lodged inside a filling machine. :o :o :o ::) Sad photo'ing them but I felt that it had to be done! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

There are some things we are better off not knowing, particularly in food processing / factories etc..... ::) ::) ::)
Many years ago I had to do some work in the VILLA Pop factory, ever bought anymore of their make again.... ::) ::) ::)
KP factory was OK though..... :y

Anyway, it's Scotland not Outer Mongolia. I doubt you'll be going 10 days between food outlets.

Popped out to Tesco, worth while little trip, spotted these Curry pouches:
Does not say its boil in bag, empty in a pan and heat for 5 mins, but the plastic is very thick, as good as the 'special' camping meal i bought other day. Should last 5 mins in boiling water easy!
A bargain at just 50p each! :o - On offer!
Going to try one at home, in case they explod in a big mess! I decided to stock up as at that price still have them at home if they don't boil well.
Boil in bag rice too, 80p for 4 packets!
So 70p for a camping dinner, if they work, back in student mode :D

Not a bad idea, the other pouch did not have one, that was just warmed for about 7 minutes or so. :-/

50p !! That's more like it. ;D :y
I've seen other similar products in Tesco. I think Thai Green curry is one.

And for 50p it tasted much better than the 'special' camping meal, good news is they work!
First I boiled the rice in its bag for 15 mins, they carefully popped in the sauce packet. I was half expecting it to burst as its not boil in bag branded, but just 5 mins, and it was nice and hot!
Put in 2/3's of the rice...
Tasted delicious! Good chucks of chicken, which did not taste rubbery, really good flavour, much better than Wayfayrer 'special' camping pack, this was much more filling and was 80% cheaper! :D

Yeah, £3.50 will buy a fry-up at most truckstops, and you don't have to supply the gas.

Can your daft cooker directly cook whats in a tin - an all day brekkie in a tin is around a quid.
Certainly when I first left home, I had to heat stuff in the tin...

Whilst it is a bit of a wilderness, do you think that everyone up here eats raw grass or something?? ;D
There are assorted bakers, cafe's roadside vans as well as tourist trap heather/tartan/shortbread/bagpipes places...... ::) ;D

Despite a rather pants web presence, the green welly shop at tyndrum is an accepted mecca stop for those passing up or down the area. Very very busy with bikers at the weekend...

Didnt forget, he wants to keep it quite. Might have Johnny foreigner invading from South of the wall, causing diminishing supplies. ;) ;D

Fer Christ's sake Broocie, show him how to stalk a haggis so he can catch his own grub when he's up your way.

I don't want to go sodding shopping while on the trip, I hate going in Tesco when I bloody need to! These packets are light and small, I can carry two weeks supply in one go.

Pheasant, gutted, stuffed with some dairylee slices, wrapped in tinfoil then onto one of the heads of Herr Schicklegrubbers finest 2 wheeled Panzervaggen for a hundred miles should do it.... ;D

Nice bit of veal if you can hit one hard enough, Hurts on a bike, mind.
-
Joking apart Tunnie, why give yourself extra weight? Pop into a Spar or corner shop and get a tin of sausages and beans if thats your favourite dish.
Used the wayfarer stuff frequently. Its not too bad, TBH but wouldn't want to live on it for a couple of weeks, especially lugging it with me for every mile....
Better still, grab a fresh cooked fish supper sometime? Whilst not on every corner as per Londinium, there are shops and takeaway places up here too.
Just don't go looking for one in the middle of Rannoch Moor!! ;)

I fail to understand you sometimes - you dont want to carry weight, but want to carry a shitload of tasteless, overpriced boil-in-bag shite :-/
I don't recall Ewan McGregor doing that, maybe I missed that episode...

Just don't go looking for one in the middle of Rannoch Moor!! ;)
My aim was to replicate those wayfarer packs, but for less. They are zero mess, just boil in water. Use water afterwards for a cup of tea....
Eat from packet, job done, no cleaning, no mess.
I intend eat cheap some nights, but others have a nice pub meal. I've got a lot of trips planned this year !
-
its just a compact gas powered kettle, whats daft about that? I could just boil a tin.... but they are heavy....
FFS, every supermarket sells them. Even your bike can carry 200g for a few miles.
I don't want to go sodding shopping while on the trip, I hate going in Tesco when I bloody need to! These packets are light and small, I can carry two weeks supply in one go.
I fail to understand you sometimes - you dont want to carry weight, but want to carry a shitload of tasteless, overpriced boil-in-bag shite :-/
I don't recall Ewan McGregor doing that, maybe I missed that episode...
Ones I just made, tasted good.
You've admitted you don't watch it, just shows, as they lived off boil in bag food for about 2 months ;) - So you missed about 7 episodes :P
-
Tunnie's Roadkill Dinner.
Starter
Numberplate Soup
Main Course
Casserole of Michelin with indicator lens garnish
Sweet
Mudflap and custard.

Actually, I did watch the first series, and I don't recall that. In reality, I suspect they lived quite well out of the back of the support trucks most of the time.
But it does confirm what I thought, what with the silly cameras and whatnot :-X

If you want boil in the bag, drop Guffer a PM and see what he can 'discover' regarding RatPacks. Could save you a fortune..... ;)
RatPacks (http://shop.ebay.co.uk/items/__british+army+ration+pack_W0QQ_dmdZ2?rvr_id=224466382662&crlp=627191437_284591_284611&UA=WVI8&GUID=4652bc0b12f0a47a2660bb60fe54485a&agid=302805457&tm_kw=british+army+ration+pack&siteid=3&MT_ID=11&tt_encode=raw&keyword=british+army+ration+pack&geo_id=21&ff4=284591_284611)

Also, dunno what your itinary includes, but can recommend the Cairn O Mount road. Cracking views, uphill and downhill twisties, but does need care.
Read the blurb in the link to see why...

Yeah saw those, looked mighty expensive for what they were, never tried them though....

Yeah, and?
If I can do a fraction of the trip's he's done i'd be happy, watching that series made me want to get a GS, and one day go to Russia & Mongolia.

Thats why I'm going up Norf, sooo many great looking roads. I'd like to experience them, on my 'silly' bike, with 'silly' camera capturing it for the memories.

Used ratpacks many a time whilst walking/hiking/shooting/Queens Duties. Full days food requirements in a box. (including tissues for those 'essential' moments....)
Some very tasty menus now available. Allegedly, only at their best when in excess of 10 years of their packing date. ;)
-
PM your address and I can send an assortment of the bits and bobs from the packs I have knocking about. Would cost you postage only as they are heavy. Can throw in a couple of the American MRE water powered individual pouch heaters as well..... ;)
-
Tunnie .. have a look on fleabay under ration packs ... loads of them there...
And contrary to popular belief .. the "quality" is extremely high .. as (1) they are designed with a very long shelf life, and (2) they have to give the energy a soldier requires in order to fight.. not just survive ....
Correctly prepared some of them actualy taste reasonably decent as well.
If memory serves me .. the 24 hour packs come in about 10 or 12 "menus"
HTH :)

I used to quite enjoy the 1 man 24 hr ratpack. Been many a year since I last opened one though. ;D ;D ;D
-
I like the dried packs - Artic use? You can get a tasty starter/main/sweet in the one boilup!
Biscuits Brown and Biscuits Fruit. Who needs Immodium or Syrup of Figs! ;D

The water heater is shown bottom left in the exploded contents part way down.

Remember, this is one meal and not 24 hours as per the UK ratpacks.

I did see ration packs on eBay, but felt they were quite a lot of money, almost much as a nice pub meal :-/ They are popular on GS forum too. Looks like they are worth a go!

As said, it is 24 hours worth of food, not just one nice meal at dinnertime....
I'll send the few samples I have left. Caveat Emptor, or whatever the cullinary equivelant is, 'cos they have been in my possession for a couple of years and goodness knows how long on the shelf in QM stores before that. :-X

cream of tomato soup,
chocolate pudding in chocolate sauce,
tuna in light mayo,

This thread reminds me of the second week after I left home. I think week 1 was pot noodle, as they were on special offer in the student's union shop. Never again. Week 2 was boil in the bag stuff like this. Never again. Week 3 I figured out how to cook and lo and behold! flavour. As an added bonus "normal movements" were resumed too. ;D I've never looked back. :y
There are so many nice little places to pick up food north of the border. Little village stores with nice deli counters, touristy tea shops with very nice cake, pubs, restaurants... I wouldn't be burdening myself with any survival food and all the related paraphernalia if I were heading North for a holiday. ;)

I don't understand the fuss, £0.70p for an evening meal? I'm not going to beat that with local forage!
I don't have the skills, to trap animals and do a proper survival trip.
Another reason for these ideas, is wild camping. Apparently in Scouser land, you can camp almost where ever you want (at least its 100m away from a public road)
-
Ohh and another reason for these cheapo meals is a trip to Norway is planned at some point, have you see the cost of living over there? :o
Beer is £9 a pint! :o

So don't drink beer ;) Used to be able to get a really decent meal in a little kebab shop (they served more than just kebabs ;D) just off Karl Johans Gate (the main street up to the palace) for about that price, including a glass of red..
'course if you wanted to eat in The Grand it was a tad more expensive ;D but I highly recommend visiting Norway.
