Title: Big Beautiful Doll - P51
Post by: Lizzie_Zoom on 07 April 2011, 18:36:41
Hurrah!!  It is coming up to summer again, and I, along with anyone else interested around Ashford, are being treated to a wonderful sight, along with sounds, of "our" own Mustang P51!!

With the good weather over a number of days now it has been flying around.  Yesterday it was up and about.  Today I have just been treated to a full barrel roll and dive outside of my lounge window!! :-* :-* :-* 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-)

This is the plane I am talking about, based at Headcorn as I understand it:

Just listen to that sound that I hear from my home, and will do throughout the Summer

Nice plane Lizzie  :y

Think the Hollywood star Mr Cruise cruises in one in his spare time and they're not a cheap plane to buy and own, think a cool million (& more) to own a good one  ::).

The yanks love these as much as we love our Merlin Spitfire's  ;) .

Yes Goose, and note the Merlin is the engine in "our" P51, which is typical of the best of that type.  It made all the difference with those daylight escort runs with B17s over Germany 8-) 8-) 8-)

Something very evocative about the sounds of the old war planes.
Not sure but there used to be the last surviving Lancaster bomber that was up till awhile back still doing 'fly over’s' on certain military anniversary days.  Now that's a plane I would love to fly in.
Would be pretty emotional as well I would imagine, as thinking about those that made it and those that didn't.  Also when they were flying the scary thing knowing if you would make it back - I'll always salute the old boys for that  :y

Ahh I do love a nice old aircraft :) I spent quite a while going 'round the Shuttleworth Collection (well worth a visit!) taking 500 photographs.. should probably make a visit to Duxford again at some point.

There was a similar vintage US aircraft I preferred to the P-51, though - twin fuselage.. I want to say the P-61, but that looks somehow uglier than the aircraft I have in my memory.. :-/

When it comes to US warbirds it's the Corsair that does it for me. Those gourgeous gullwings remind me of a vintage glider - and the sound of the R-2800 double wasp doesn't remotely. :-*

I think I built a Corsair once .. sadly I mean an Airfix one, rather than one that flies..

I never did finish my flying model aircraft :(

If we are talking ww2 classics, the Bristol Beaufighter and the deHavilland Mosquito do it for me...............................the pure manoeverability and grace of those two planes, and the mastery of the skies they both had was just superb. The Beaufighter with 4 cannon, 16 rockets, and bombs too was the ultimate "all rounder" with the Mossie very close behind. and the 'Beau with radar and nightfighter kit was unbeatable, the FW110s couldn't compete.

Sorry to go on, but I'm a real ww2 plane nut, and just love the "gentlemanly" pilot code between the two sides of fighter pilots in both ww1 and ww2, there was real respect.

And the sound of the twin merlins from the mossie in a dive...............................oooh-eeeerrrr!!

Wasn't that the one where the front looked like it had been in a bump, (cone looking thing set slightly back in the nose cone) ?

Yes beautiful planes that had a great reputation especially during the Italian campaign up from the Sicily landings. 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-)

As a side fact, the American Officer, played by Steve McQueen in The Great Escape flew one of them until being shot down :D :D :D ;)

The ME262 would though have been a very serious challenge to those, as it was to the P51 Mustang.  But fortunately, due mainly to the mass bombing by British Bomber Command and the American Eighth Army Air Force, they ran out of fuel and basically became grounded, as was the unfortunate ME163 Komet which was lethal to its pilots! :D :D :D ;)

One of my favourite planes !
As a kid I was always building Airfix model plane kits. Real dust magnets in the end. I know Im getting old now as I get quite nostalgic for all the interests I had way back then and Ive a whole caddy full of downloaded photos of my favourite warplanes classic cars etc. Always had a thing for US Navy aircraft in particular for some reason, just liked the designs. (BTW my mum worked at Farnborough on the Fairy Delta for those who recall that oldie)

It was definitely the P38 I was thinking of - though the F82 is particularly pretty, too.

The story goes that when Goering saw a P51 escorting B17's over Berlin he said, "For us zee var iss over", or words to that effect.

.........I never saw any Classic Warbirds kept at Headcorn - too easy to nick from there, I'd have thought!

That sort of plane used to fly over and occasionally stop there for a while. I've certainly seen an earlier version in drab green there(the one before the tear drop canopy 51-C? 51-B?)

Gary Numan and his Harvard 'squadron' certainly used to  fly a lot from/where based there. We used to have to stand down from Jumping while they did their practice formations (still happens apparently).

Always lovely to listen to as they went thundering overhead! :y

Big Beautiful Doll is based at Woodchurch which was a temporary USAAF airfield (field being the operative word!) and is now a private airfield now owned I believe by the owner of the P51. I installed Broadband for his best mate who lives down the road, he was telling me when he went for a flight in the back seat (it's been converted into a two seater by taking out one of the fuel tanks!) which he said was "unforgetable!!"

He flies his P51 at the Headcorn Combined Ops military show in August and gives a smashing display. Just found this link,

And here's a link for the Combined Ops show with one of our radio controlled tanks in the first pic  :)
