ITunes wont allow me to get the data off an old 3rd gen iPod as it's registered with another iTunes library which killed our old pc and no longer exists.
It's a 3rd generation which is also a pita as nout works with it, justifiably gay device if ever there was one. TB is absolutely right in this case. But there's a lot of music on it we would like to use on newer devices plus it needs an update.
So I guess I need another piece of software that won't crash/kill the lap top to retrieve the tracks back to the pc. It's music only as the poxy thing can't handle anything else. Any recommendations? seem to remember iPod agent was ok but that was years ago and things have no doubt moved on since...?

iPod as in classic iPod rather than touch/nano/etc?
Force it into disk mode: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363?viewlocale=en_US
Connect to the PC, navigate to the file structure of the iPod and copy everything from (I think) the 'Music' directory off - the filenames & directory names will be meaningless but the meta data in the files is intact.
Import the files into iTunes making sure you've got the 'Keep iTunes Media folder organized' and 'Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library' options turned on et voila, everything will be reorganised into Artist/Album/TrackName.ext files that are human readable.

Other problem is the battery is barely holding charge. :(

Why is that a problem when it's connected via the USB anyway?

You should be able to put that one into disk mode with the instructions in that link (at the bottom it has a section for 'pre click-wheel iPods')

Lappy not charging it via USB. It prefers fire wire iirc?

Yeah just looking at that. :y
I fear the battery may be the final nail.

As a last resort you could always pop over and we'll attach some "jump leads". [smiley=evil.gif]

If we can get the music off it it's yours.... Although I quite like it actually, can hear the disc spin up. :). Little things.
Although it's caused enough agro >:(, nah 'dangle berries', send to the chair. ;D. :y

You could always take the drive out and connect it to a PC.
Failing that, I have 6TB of music here so I'm sure I could replace pretty much all your music for you.
