Title: Best single malt?
Post by: Field Marshal Dr. Opti on 21 April 2011, 11:56:11
I have a friend who claims he can correctly identify the taste of more than twenty single malts in a blind test.

In his subjective opinion Laphroaig is the best single malt available.

He describes Glenfiddich as "commercial crap"......that  sells well because of  excellent advertising.

Personally I drink very little whisky/whiskey :-/ :-/.......I much prefer a drop of rum and vodka. :y :y :y

The best malt for me has to be Lagavulin, but it is very pricey nowadays. Glenfiddich is the only malt that I have to take a dash of water with to make it bearable, lol. Glenmorangie is good but I find the Glenmorangie Port Wood to be their best. If looking  for the best kept secret, and at a reasonable price, look out  for Old Pulteney, you will not be disappointed! Usually to be found in Morrisons, Co-op or Spar on a special for around £20 to£23 at most

i have half a bottle of Balvenie double wood to get through then onto a rare 30 year old glenffiddich solera that was a gift from a very respected celebrity who will remain nameless

as to which is the best i say one that you like and would drink in company and alone

everyone has there own ideas that makes the world a little more intresting

Bushmills used to be my preference - the 16 year old 3 wood is about £50 now - have not bought for some time but was nice

Jura, in particular 'Superstition' but I like many of the isle Malts as well as laphroaig, just about anything really I tend to get a range of them on my Birthday or Christmas, day to day stuff I choose by what is on offer..... :D :D :D

I have noticed though that the bottles all seem to leak these days, sadly..... ::) ::) ::)

It depends on what you like in your taste of Whiskey...

I personally like Glen Morangie and Glen Livet, I personally find that Bowmore has a very strong perfumed flavour which is very powerful and unpleasant...

Your best bet is to pay the Clachaig Inn a visit in Glencoe, with there awesome range of Whiskey's available to find the one best suited to you (would take a few days to get through their selection too)...

It always amazes me when we're at a meet and H21 and Countess Dundee appear with some of Scotland's finest brews.
I've never really liked whisky before till I sampled some of the real stuff.
Faves are Jura, A'bunadh and Laphroaig.
Not forgetting the £100 a bottle rocket fuel Broocie was letting us sample last year.
Who says Scotsmen are "careful" with their money? ;D ;D

I urge ANY of you Whisky drinkers to grab a bottle of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dalwhinnie_Single_Malt.  It's only £30-£40 a bottle (depending on where you get it from) but it's a simple 15yr smoked malt, smooth but plenty of flavour.

Incidently, it is from the highest altitude distilary in the UK, or so it says on the bottle.  :y

Interesting reading , confirms one thing though and that is there is no definitive "best " Malt ,and long may that be  .
As someone who didn't discover the pleasures of Single Malt whiskey until my thirties I have since  quietly pursued that pleasure whenever and wherever I could.  ::)
I cannot say that there has ever been one that I would avoid after sampling for first time and I have found that many influences of the day will determine the level of enjoyment given by each Malt some I considered mediocre initially have later surprised and enchanted me .
I've even been fortunate since moving over here to Ireland to have tried some rare and very enjoyable Irish Single Malts .
Thats the wonderful thing about enjoying Malt Whiskies, they're all great ............ :)

Like said a Best whisky is rather a difficult one. There are literally hundreds of types.
Again, like Zok said it is down to Hotel21 and Mike Dundee why I myself have acquired a taste for it.
My favourites are
The Balvenie (double wood)
Dalwhinnie
Aberlour A'bunadh
Jura.

My choice is Edradour from Pitlochry, the smallest distillery. :y
Masters of malt http://www.masterofmalt.com/ do a fantastic range at reasonable prices. They also do taster samples, some costing more than a good bottle in some cases, but a way to sample many different malts.

Can't bear Laphroig, tastes like battery acid but then I don't like any peaty whisky. Much prefer Irish for some reason in particular Powers gold label, hard to find here but lovely and smooth.

Your mate is correct laphroaig is the best in my opinion, but there are many people with different tastes.

must say that many of those mentioned would make my list! My lad always gets me a small bottle from the "whisky shop" at christmas and they seem to have quite a choice .There are times when I fancy a "peatier" dram and others something a bit smoother/sweeter. Just because I like marmite doesnt mean I dont like honey if you know what I mean. Doesnt necessarily mean that one is " better" than the other. Cheaper end of the market, though Im partial to Jamesons, I think Grouse is the best blended brand. Really do not like the likes of Bells/White Horse. But what do I know, Ive also been known to slug back pocheen.... ;D
