Title: My 2.0 Carlton
Post by: Martian on 25 April 2011, 20:43:58
Been out all day at my mates workplace where we are building our latest design.
Enter our idea of a 2.0 carlton that I reckon could take an Omega in a straight line if the pilot has the nads for it   :D

Build cost has been minimal thanks to the British Army (thanks for the workshop space & materials boys), and we had it running properly for the first time today (that's how we know how quick it is).
Still quite a few things to tidy up before it goes for it's SVA and all the other rubbish inflicted upon us these days, but we're confident it will be a pass in time for the summer.

A couple of pics to whet your appetite's (if this floats your boat to start with that is), and more to follow as we progress (if anyone is interested).

Steering angle looks steep, will that work on a trike? :-/

The acceleration is quite an eye opener.

The handlebars pivot on their centre, so nowhere near as steep as it looks.

It's not overly sensitive TBH, and it wouldn't matter if it was because a trike is hardly designed for fast cornering/maneuvering anyway.

...maybe that's why I don't get it, generally. Best of luck with it anyway, interesting.  :y

In the same way a car driver will never quite understand a biker you mean?

I do bike, trike, and car Albs. The best of all worlds, and the time needed to finish it is now at my disposal for the next year at the very least (energy levels permitting).

In a way that's neither one nor the other....  As a biker and a car driver. Trikes never appealed to me personally, as I'm sure can tell. And it's interesting which part of the post you choose to pick up on.  ;D

So, as said, an interesting project, non the less.  :y

I'm a bit like chrisgixer on this, I drive cars and ride bikes, never quite understood trikes - but then I've never really ridden one, beyond the electric ones at seaside funfairs ;D. Like you say, a car driver wouldn't see the appeal of a bike, and I'm guessing many bikers wouldn't see the appeal of a trike?

But I agree it looks like an interesting project, and looks like a whole heap of fun designing and fabricating it.  Good luck with the project :y

The temptation for me would be to put another front wheel on and turn it into a locost but then I've only ever got into cars without roofs and planes without engines. ;)

Should get plenty of wind in your hair, though, and that's what matters. :y

Any reason for going with that power train in particular? Guessing something pre-August 1995 is important at SVA? Or is emissions not such a PITA for a trike?

Good to see the workshops are being utilised. Almost expected to see the HMS Guffer lurking in the background. ;)

Good luck with the project and keep us updated on progress. :y On the road in time for the tail-end of the summer perhaps?

Kevin

Talking of steering lock... do you have to dismount to get full turn?  I can imagine you won't be looking to do J-turns in/on it but parallel parking could be a pain surely?

As a biker/car driver I have to agree that trikes don't excite me.  They seem to combine the worst of both worlds in a way.  Apart from bikers with a disability that prevents them biking, the only thing going for them is it must be possible to create a feeling of rebellion what with not wearing all the protective gear and yet open to the elements.

That said I do have a fascination for them and admire the ability to chop vast swathes of structure from a car or build frames from scratch.

Please keep the reports coming. :y

I've never really been in to the idea of a trike myself either, but after a weekend of American Chopper and god knows how many litres of homebrew cider it seemed like a good idea at the time.

The power train was chosen because the doner car was free, and emissions aren't a problem.

I've been saving my steroids up so I can use them at weekends for just such an event as this, so if all goes to plan then there is no reason it shouldn't be out there this summer.

Good question.
We haven't got a final weight yet, but it's going to be under the 450KG so it remains in trike class for crap like road tax, etc.
However if we assume 400KG and we assume the 2.0 makes 120BHP (I don't know what it makes), that should give me around 350BHP per tonne or thereabouts (which is acceptable enough for now  :) )

No Chris, although my (short) arms are outsretched pretty much to the limit for a full lock. Nothng major mind, just a slight inconvenience when reversing possibly.

Based on your suggestion, it is now known as Triketon  :y
