today.
Big Pharma must be rubbing its hands in joy.
Professor George Lewith, professor of health research at Southampton University, said: ‘Evidence for the efficacy of herbal medicines is growing; they may offer cheap, safe and effective approaches for many common complaints.’
Well, I'll guess we'll never benefit, even if they do. >:(

Then again, if you're ill, the last thing you need is someone selling you snake oil instead of proper medicine, which has certainly been the case in some instances. :-/
-
The herbal medicines that some people at St Luke's are using have been banned for years, doesn't stop them smoking it or the nursing staff actively encouraging them to smoke as much as possible though.

Not all herbal remedies are snake oil, Kevin. Remember that there are many common medicines that are based on natural ingredients - aspirin for one.
Also, there are many industrial remedies that are known to have rather horrid side-effects.
That said, my problem is haveing a ban. Why is it necessary to ban these things? Do we have an epidemic of people dying from eating dandelions and such? No. I believe people should have a choice.
EU says "No"
....as always. >:(

I believe people should have a choice.
Our right to make our own decisions went out of the door ages ago, and if you have the audacity to ignore nanny then that will be an on the spot fine of £80.

does homeopathy come under this? i know health shops have been adapting, but how far does it go.

Nick this is a genuine question, where do you get your info? do you read alot of newspapers?
Although not interested in some of the topics I stand in awe at the information you seem to find.

Daz,
Essentially, I get the news from blogs. The mainstream media (BBC, ITV, etc) are simply not up to the job these days. Partly that's due to broadcasting time constraints, it is also partly due to the fact that some news stories are deemed too complex for a TV bulletin and, I believe, it is also down to editorial bias.
Blogs have no controls over them. There are institutional blogs, MP's blogs and individual's blogs. At the end of the day, the vast majority of them will link to the orginal source...it may be an obscure EU PDF press release or something, but blogs soon lose their credibility if they cannot back up their statements. It seems to be the case that, increasingly, the manistream media are turning to blogs for hot news stories. :y :y

Daz, the World needs lots more Nickbats! We are otherwise sleepwalking into oblivion neither knowing nor caring who runs our lives behind closed doors with relative impunity! As for 'Snakeoil Remedies', my nervous system has been irreversibly damaged by 'modern', laboratory engineered medicine that has been legally licenced for use on Prescription, each packet complete with a sheet of 'get out of jail free' adverse symptoms encountered by those 'testing' the drugs! We need informed choice, not unilateral bans by faceless bureaucrats :y

Phyliss ;D
My Mum has owned her Alternative Medicine Book for as long as I can remember. I always thought it was because she was tight not wanting to fork out on perscriptions..... but she hates having tablets as "You never know whats in them!" so I know where your coming from.
My Nanna was really ill and was having tablets to counteract tablets. She was almost like a Zombie when my Mum looked up these tablets that apparently had caused several people simular side effects. Within a few days of not taking them Nanna was back to her oldself thankfully...
I aren't saying we should not take our perscribed tablets by the way :-?

i could be wrong.. blogs are are an info stream which are not mediated. if the story follows a theme and culminates in a story with history, it is made more creditable if the mainstream decide to backup a story with footage.

Blogs are "weblogs", Daz, nothing special. They are websites run by people that usually allow comments and feedback. Nothing magical, though, they are just websites.
For example:
Here is Norman Tebbit's blog:
http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/author/normantebbit/
Here is the now very famous Guido Fawkes blog:
http://order-order.com/
OK, that's politics, but there are also blogs and forums for professions:
Here's the Professional Pilots Rumour Network, a great forum to find out what real airline staff talk about:
http://www.pprune.org/
..and if you're interested in the police, try this blog:

I won't do the weather blogs, I have loads bookmarked! ;) ;)

I forgot one of my favourites, EU Referendum or more correctly the blog of Dr Richard North. I don't always agree with him (he can be the Victor Meldrew of the blogosphere), but generally I think along the same lines. Currently, he is running the story about Vicky Haigh, a truly disturbing story of Britain's official child-snatching culture, told in print tomorrow morning by Christopher Booker in the Telegraph. A must read! :y

this link intersted me. people need to be controlled in large numbers for there own safety. those present acknowledge this and are happy to oblige.
seeing the partitions of the crowd as they went down the mall compared with tragic circumstances such as the hillsborough disaster proves so.

Yes, and strange you should ask that for, of all the blogs I read, Norman alone often reponds to the comments in his follow-up blog, something no other politician does - to the best of my knowledge. :y
