Something has gone seriously wrong here (leaving aside Cameron's orginal daft decision to intervene). Nato effectively assasinates one of Gaddafi's sons, who apparently is not involved militarily, and then Hague gets all uptight when our Embassy gets burned out by a spontaneous and angry reaction from the Libyan people.
Thanks to Cameron & Hague, we now witness a competely unmanageable mess, in a country where we should never have been from the start.

I suppose WW1 and 2 were the Conservatives fault as well. ::)

I think the black gold has something to do with it or we or the yanks would not be there, as was the case in other parts of Africa. That does not make it correct for any leader to kill his own kind.

Can't see the point of your sarcasm.
I think Cameron was grandstanding rather when he pushed for intervention in Libya. It certainly wasn't the prevailing desire in Washington or, indeed, within Europe (with the exception of France). The original no-fly zone policy has transformed into a regime-change game, something which is fraught with difficulty. I had reservations then..and I am dead set against our involvement now. >:(
Incidentally, until relatively recently, I was a staunch supporter of the Conservative Party. Unfortunately it seems to have gone missing... ;)

Quite right Nick.
The mission is indeed creeping.
You know, many elements within the 'West' must have a death wish, too much time on their hands, a warped desire to build empires or do something – anything - but govern effectively within their own countries such is their propensity to stick the oar into waters so treacherous that all previous attempts to intervene in that region in the hope of producing satisfactory results for the effort expended, have come to naught.
Once again this country has been placed in a situation that may well have serious consequences for not only those who will be expected to enforce the political will of our government, but also for those of us who will be expected to pay for it in taxes yet to be raised in a world made even more unstable by this ill-advised regional intervention.
It would be laughable were it not so serious.

The "World Police" responds with the modern equivalent of gun-boat diplomacy.......will we ever learn?!?! :'(

Nope, we're just hairless apes with bigger weapons. It'll be hundreds if not thousands of years - assuming we don't destroy ourselves in the mean time - before we evolve past that.
But y'know, I'm not known for my optimism.
Must admit I thought much the same thing as Nick when I saw the news, though.

Yeah if the death of his son and grandsons are confirmed, is that not a war crime? There is a hell of alot of mission creep. Makes me ashamed tbh. I have a conservative outlook, but Cameron has lost the plot. We need a proper Tory government

So the Arab league didn't ask for NATO intervention, and nor did the Rebel forces? And NATO didn't hesitate for good reason to get involved because of exactly this sort of issue? Have I misunderstood?
The main reason for delay in enforcing the no fly zone and the rest, was because of inevitable civilian/innocent casualties as I understood it?
...and so here we are. Any surprise?

At least that wedding gave us a break from this. Not having a pop at you Nick, your posts attract responses from many others on what is an important subject that i'm in no way trying to detract from....but....
I know full well when i return to work on wednesday every radio news will be banging on about it including r2 & r4 at lunchtime simultaneously sometimes & every paper from tabloid to broadsheet will be peppered with it...no escape!!!

No problemo, Amigo.
In all seriousness, I often deliberately avoid the news. That's one reason I listen to Classic FM...and turn it off for 5 minutes on the hour! I take my news from the web...when I feel sufficiently spiritually strong enough to absorb it, that is. ;)
Funnily enough, though, I am actually an optimist! ;) ;D

You're profound of thought Nick. I especially love the Marx quote, ultimate irony! :y

who are you, and what have you done with Nickbat? :o ;D

Yep
Two things.
1. I believe we( Britain) are only Libya to promote our military. We make a LOT of money from weapons sales to other countries. (I think the Spanish made the cluster bombs that Gadafi has alledgedly been using ). There is also an element of we know what is best for everyone else. What was our exit strategy again? It must have been solely the death of Gadafi and his eldest son.
2. The irony of the oil being the issue is that it would have flowed and been eagerly consumed by the "world" regardless of whether Gadafi or someone else is in power. It is in everyones interests to keep it flowing. Actually having and prolonging a "war" is hurting the oil supply!
