Well Jaimie wanted something else on the news, this will run for a long time no doubt. It appears he was killed by US forces working in Pakistan and his body has been recovered. It has only taken 9 years.......
I wonder if this was the reason the Royal honeymoon was postponed? If they were going to a Muslim country when this was kicking off you could imagine how nervous the Royal Protection Squad would have been.

Stay alert peeps, I get the feeling we have just kicked the wasps nest :-/

Yep just come across that too?

Oops, just started another thread on this subject. Perhaps Jimbob could merge them when hes had his cornflakes. :-[ :D

I certainly agree with you G. :y

Only question is why did it take so long? Were any officials or military in Pakistan in any way shielding his location? Obviously so otherwise this would probably have happened sooner.
Good riddance though to that terrorist coward! Hope all his followers receive their just rewards and meet the same end.
If anyone is seeking sympathy; It can be found in the Oxford English dictionary between Sh*t and Syphilis.
;D :y

The yanks have killed him, took them long enough, but alls well that ends well I suppose. :)
Hopefully it will have the effect of cutting the head off a snake.

One would hope the 'Lernaean Hydra' that is terrorism; doesn`t sprout a new head (or two). :-/

We can hope. Time will tell I suppose. :-/

thats a forlorn hope Albs, it may have cut the head off a snake but theres hundreds of vipers in the nest, plus any new "leader" if Al Queda has a leader, is going to look at making a name for himself quickly :o
-
It will give some kind of closure to all the families of the 9/11 and 7/7 victims at least, but there'll be other people to take his place :(
-
Lived in a mansion in a built-up area apparently, not exactly 'hiding out in a cave in a remote, mountainous area' eh? ::)

Unfortunately Banjax, you are probably right. :(
-
Being cynical for a moment - Obama might have just helped himself win the next election. ;)
-
It will at least help families who lost loved ones during the 9/11 and 7/7 attacks come to terms with their losses, but as you say…who comes next? I think the Americans should now be extremely vigilant against retaliation attacks. :exclamation
-
Such a shame they couldn't have taken him alive.
-
Alive? All that would achieve would be to encourage his followers to escalate their actions and take hostages to effect his release!
Best method was DEAD!
It saves a lot of aggravation and EXPENSE

That's the thing twisting my teats at the moment.
At the very least he can expect some recovery in the abysmally low poll/popularity ratings presently of concern to his Administration - that is until the 5 Dollar (+) a gallon gas price becomes more prevalent across the country.
I’m no lover of Obama: It was obvious to me, from the get-go, that he was too slick to have real substance. He has, in my view, been a bad CIC for the United States and has presided over some of the most draconian legislation ever to be introduced there in a bid to (apparently) ‘protect’ its citizenry.
Aside from the opportunistic capital his Administration will try to make from this news, it was by all accounts a well executed operation by US forces and therefore all the teams responsible for it should be congratulated.
I suggested before that, rather than getting stuck into Afghanistan, Pakistan and the Tora Bora region on the border between the two countries were the places to concentrate on as there has been no doubt that certain elements within Pakistan provided real succour for the Al Qaeda movement.

Not so sure, Den. Most organisations like this require charismatic leadership and when that is eliminated, the structure falls apart. Much like the Bader-Meinhof gang, methinks. Hope I'm right, anyway! ;) ;D

Sadly Albs I doubt it.
It will have no detremental effect on Al Qaeda operations, in all probability only further galvanize them and potential supporters .
After being targeted as Americas no 1 enemy Bin Laden would have long since set up a devolved command structure to deliberatly thwart any effect his demise would have on Al Qaeda .
In a decade this will have rendered him a " brand name only " and all power from tactical to finance will be in the hands of a myriad of very capable successors .
It's a tremendous coup for Obama from a PR point of view but I suspect that the vast majority will see it as that and that alone .
I have to say though that I do feel a sense of justice and even satisfaction re his death for the deeds he initially masterminded.
This and will remain a growing problem for the West irrespective of what the political leaders of the day and the media will proudly tell us .
Be vigilant...................

It would be good if it were to have that effect Nick but I don't think it will - sadly.
There seems to me to be a particular tendency within certain elements of the Middle Eastern region to believe that violence towards outsiders is the only means open to them to ensure the sanctity and promotion of their way of life and the ‘truth’ that is Islam.
Whilst Bin Laden was the public face of this extremism there are others just as ‘visionary’ and charismatic to carry this fight forward, and although this successful military mission may well create a pause in Al Qaeda’s overall aim to rid the world on the Infidel, the lust for this desire is too ingrained, too well established and capitalised to be truncated by his death.

But this way none of the conspiracy theorists will believe he's actually dead.. or that he even existed (see Cem's links)..
Like others, I certainly don't think this is going to stop terrorism, or achieve anything other than rattling their cage and making things worse - and since we're lumped in with America on this, they aren't the only ones who should be vigilant against retaliatory attacks - look out for them coming to a city near you soon, I imagine.
-
Amongst all the reactions of world leaders to Bin Laden's demise, this one sticks out like a sore thumb:
Ismail Haniyeh, head of Hamas administration in Gaza Strip:
We condemn the assassination and the killing of an Arab holy warrior. We regard this as a continuation of the American policy based on oppression and the shedding of Muslim and Arab blood.
No wonder there is little likelihood of a settlement to the hostilities in that region. ::) ::)

Was watching on the BBC news this morning. The film of americans gathering at ground zero (the site of the two towers) and shouting an screamng like maniacs. They actually looked like people demonstrating in the middle east, short of firing off AK47s.
I actually found it somewhat disturbing how the americans are "celebrating" his death. I am no fan of his or terrorism in general, but what seperates us from the terrorists when people celebrate the death of someone ? :( :) :-[ :-/
-
just think of a scenario.. a terrorist living very close to a city in a luxury house with high walls.. :-?
and all the west searching for him ;D ;D ;D ;D
and obama come into the tv and said "we killed him" ;D ;D ;D ;D
really funny story.. and no way on earth I would believe that.. he was a muppet.. job finished .. and dead , may be earlier may be now.. but doesnt matter.. and by the way you can find thousands of similiar faces in arabia..
at least one thing is good, I was fed up with this story and its finally over.. I do never believe those people have the ability to do 9/11..

must admit, watching footage of this tall, gentle looking cleric with kind eyes and then cutting to baying mobs of americans dancing and celebrating his death - an alien looking on would think we were the bad guys :o
wonder if George Bush will say a few words at his funeral - both families are very close ;)

Give the Americans a break.....
They've put up with TV footage of wide eyed middle eastern pistol wavers dancing with utter glee at every opportunity they could at America's expense .
I too was initially unsure of the young inebriated revellers dancing in the street but what the hell if we had suffered nigh on 3000 dead on 7/7 I think we'd have had a little cheer too......

there is a rule for govts (and also in politics) you want to survive , create an enemy!!
last 20 years has passed with the tales from presidents starting with Saddam :P
now Obama trying to guarantee the elections, according to news (which I dobelieve is longer) they knew the place from the last summer.. but waited for elections to be close and the event to be "fresh"..

Very true Cem. Bin laden was actually a very very nice man. Those evil yanks just tried to convince us all that he was rather unpleasant so they could take over the world. ::) ;D ;D

Albs, I'm afraid, middle east is full of people who hate yanks and have the potential to be a terrorist when they find a chance.. so burning a single straw do not solve the problem where there is a barn full of ;D
if you dont "dry the swamp" things will never change!! ;)

and if you want to "dry the swamp", first change how you think and second your behaviours , which is impossible for yanks ;D

Yes, I'm inclined to agree cem - there is no doubt in my mind that the Obama administration will attempt to make political capital from this, it's the name of the game after all although I doubt that it was totally engineered for naked political purposes.
I also agree that most political systems seem to need a bogey-man help maintain and justify their time in office.
Insofar as Bin Laden is concerned he was created by default (as far as I can see) as a result of the foreign policy of the United States and by the domestic actions of those countries in the region which courted Western interests to help maintain their own powerbases.

I make Cem right, we in the west need to look ourselves in the mirror and ask if we brought this on ourselves in part? Dont fund terrorism when it suits and condemn it when it doesnt. Dont retaliate for the murder of 3000 innocents with the murder of 100000 innocents - we make ourselves very easy to hate - democracy for all, unless you have oil and the brutish dictatorship we're propping up feeds our habit. Very easy to hate. Dont make it a war of good vs bad, christian vs muslim as the ludicrous retarded cowboy tried to. Killing Bin Laden will do nothing to alter the situation. Dancing in the streets over it is fairly repellant and if it were the other way around it'd be rightly condemned.

in the debate as Albs mentioned the term "yanks" is used.. I must note that I hate generalisations.. An ordinary American people is same like you and me.. Not willing to die in a battle which doesnt interest him.. but the decisions of the country are taken by the upper class and they had to obey to "survive" in the system including presidents (which are only the showman on the front ).. :-/ :(
and the power of media must never be neglected on ordinary people.. :(

Yes, they will no doubt point to extremists rejoicing over the deaths at 9/11 and other atrocities.
This was their chance to prove that they are better than that.

alive means a court , a jurry and he could tell how cia trained him and give many names.. which could start another international disaster..
-
Although it isnt an edifying sight, I dont blame the Americans for their response. This guy organised the worst terrorist atrocities the world has seen - on U.S. soil. Just think for a minute of the sheer horror and evil which we witnessed on 9/11 and that might put it into perspective from their point of view.
As for the "we have brought this on ourselves nonsense" why oh why are the left always finding reasons to try to justify the evil of terrorism. I heard it for years over Northern Ireland, and they are at it again with the jihadists. It makes my blood boil.
-
Just been told that the price of oil fell today on the back of this.
Brucie bonus. :)

not directly related to the subject.. but I wanted to share some of my thoughts about events happening in middle east.. imo us intelligency see the future danger that all those countries in the region have some "common feelings"..
and mostly those countries have dictators in management .. and people suffer.. and us decided to change this fact.. decided to bring more democratic and friendly managements for their opinion and also for the love of black gold .. ::) ;D
we will see..but I'm sure future will be full of surprises :-X :-X
