Even though she does not read the forum, for letting me borrow her Estate.
For some time had a weeks camping planned with some mates in Cornwall, could not believe our luck at the weather reports.
I drove back from London with a mate, to get all the gear from my parents, pick up another mate and drive down. Stopped for gas, thought as I pulled out it sounded a bit throaty, looked down and found this:

Back box pipe had come clean off - Whats more annoying is this was a propper old skool GM zorst, double walled, last of the good ones :'(
Luckily I had a spare exhaust in the garage, destined for father T's 2.2, he would not mind ::)
So I set to work....

Gets to 10pm at night, could i get the exhaust bolts out? could i !£^&%&%
So last minute decision i'd take mother T's Estate :)
So off to my mates, and we loaded up the bus:

I treated it to a wash as I was borrowing it....

Arrived at the Campsite:

and cracked open some local brew:

Now we had good reports for the weather for weeks, so i was concerned about getting a pitch, I even rang up the day before, asking do you have space? "we can fit you in was the reply"
This was our field ::)

Burger Van field was empty too:

Went for a wonder around, rubbish weather!

Testing out my new camera, which was my Crimbo pressie from Sky :D

It was all going well...

Until....

Managed to change it, even though I forgot to check the kit, i brought zero tools >:( Usually with mine i load it up with breaker bars ect, but as it was last minute thing to take the estate I did not bring tools :(
Luckilly a nice bloke in a Merc lent me his breaker bar from his kit, which is much better than the shyte Vauxhall one, so got the wheel off:

Found a place near by for new tyre, thanks to father T for the quick googling :y
Got back to the camp site, cracked open more beers and got the camp fire going

All in all best camping trip ever done, perfect weather, no crowds, loads of great BBQ food and great views :D

How many spacers have you got on the towbar? Looks to be ....... towbar/spacer/drop plate/spacer/towball :-/ Those bolts must be working overtime! :-? :-? :-? :-?

That is a seriously nasty split in what looks like an otherwise very sound tyre. Wonder what caused it? :o
Good pics, by the way. :y

You need to treat yourself to one one of these. Cheap but quite effective. :y :y

Lovely weather.
Was it a good break?

No idea, it was on it when we bought it. The electrical hook up is not even wired in ;D
Its good for taking out front bumpers though ;D

Is that a can of WD40 in the second pic down? If it is no wonder you couldn't get the nuts undone ::)
WD40 is a water dispersant not a lubricant or derusting agent - you need Plusgas or Loctite do a good one now that really works well ;)
-
Guessing that tyre has been on the front with a camber problem at some point for the shoulder wear it's showing.
As an aside, when we first started towing the caravan with the estate I was surprised how much higher the pressure needs to be for fully laden - something like 46PSI from 34PSI on the rears (16 Inch wheels).

This was the campsite:
http://www.chycarne.co.uk/aboutus.html
Can highly recommend it, cost us £35 each for a 5 nights :o
Brand new toilet block, free hot showers, and bog roll!
I picked it as its one of the few sites which allows open fires at night, which is a big part of camping for me. (have to use firepit, can be rented for £2.50 a night)
This was the view in the morning, we borrowed a bench from the other end of the site:

That table view was stunning tunnie.
What a lovely place to relax and have a few cold one's.
Glad you enjoyed yourself mate :y :y

It was passenger near side, to my knowledge its never been on the front.
I was running it at 38PSI, no van, but it was fully loaded. That tyre did actually have an issue keeping pressure, it would drop 5 psi or so over course of about 2 weeks, can't see that slash being the cause :-/
There was as second slash bit futher on!

Scary, good job you weren't on the motorway when it decided to split.

I know know, I don't have any proper tools ::)
that said, it worked a charm on father T's zorst, got home, took that off on my own no probs, fitted new one as well.
I had to set mr angry, the fat man a respectable admin who lives up the road to force off the offending bolt. ;D

Yup, no more than 30mph trundling along the Cornwall lanes!

Cheers, it was our best trip yet. We've been going on holidays (3 of us) since we were at college, gone all over USA, Europe, Japan ect, but this was our best camping trip by far.
We had all the right gear and tools (apart from the puncture) and it was just a really nice chilled week :)

I used to up the tyre pressure to the higher pressures shown in the handbook, but then thought that the weight on the back/tow ball wasn't much different from having one extra passenger in the back of the car. So I just leave them as is now. I've towed thousands of miles now with 32 lbs in my tyres no adverse affect on ride or tyre wear. :-/ :-/
-
nice pictures Tunnie..and some of them were really prof style.. thanks for sharing :y :y :y
-
Incidently, I presume one of the new exhausts was an Eternal one? If so is it as good as the V6 ones? I may need to think about getting a new one on Janes DTi estate.
-
Handy for a lot of places there.
Where was the table sea view - just can't place it ::) ::)
So what drinks did you try - like to see what was nice.
Nice view from site but we stay in a back garden.

I notice your vehicle runs on 17's like my two Elites, I would be tempted to do the same on those (No hitch on them though ::)) but I think the 16's on Janes estate have a fair bit more sidewall to flex in 225/55/16 profile.

Yup its Eternal, cost just £72 cat back :o
Its actually gone on father T's, I've not driven it much, but must say fairly impressed, its nice and silent. For the money you can't go wrong! :y

looks a nice trip :y
-
Looks like a good trip.
That eternal seemed to be a better fit than the (new style) GM one ;D ;D

As to your dad's one being more spritely.... ....when you floored it, I was expecting something to happen ;D

I shouldn't jest - it was that powerful, it wiped out the brakes ;D
I'm guessing he got a lift this week? I saw the gold one on the drive earlier today?

Aye, got a lift and getting the train back from the Airport on Friday.
Already rang in, set of rear pads was in stock :o
I'm collecting pads Friday morning to fit, going to stop off and screwfix and get some man sized tools for that rear caliper. Thinking getting two, so i press the caliper in evenly this time. :-/

On a kind of related matter, thanks to tunnie for taking Mrs TB and I out for a meal after doing his exhaust. A very pleasant evening - a couple of Cobras washing down a rather tasty Chicken Naga, and an evening of good company :y
Boy, did I pay for it the following morning though ;D

No problemo, I owed you a Curry, especially for your help that afternoon :y

Its hungry work, squeezing my bulk under your car ;D

I had no such problem. When you said you would have trouble, thought you were joking, that was until your stomach started to clean doors as you tried to squeeze under ;D ;D

Great pics of what appears to have been a very enjoyable time - well done. 8-) :y
