Title: OUT AND ABOUT...........
Post by: Sixstring on 05 May 2011, 09:10:47
Most of you know that I'm all around the country with my job, so if I said I saw loads of miggy's through the course of my week, you would'nt be surprised.

 BUT.............

Just for fun, I started counting them, and putting a tick on a bit of paper every time I saw one, and in a whole week in London central I saw...........................

THREE.

Bloody hell, there getting a bit thin on the ground now.

Can anybody actually put a figure on how many of each there is left? My Elite 3.0 PFL estate appears to be the only one around my parts, and didn't even see one in three weeks away in London, only a 2.5 CDX estate, and that was F/L.

Loads of 2.2 saloons though..................

I see the occasional one but spotted this armoured vehicle a couple of weeks ago.

One of the few remaining DTI's I would imagine - the 3.2's being largely phased out.

In March this year,  I did a week long trip to the UK and drove around quite a bit. Despite looking hard for Omegas I saw very few- certainly less than six. Just as well as I carried out my pre trip threat of hooting and waving at everyone.

Predictably no one responded but probably later considered ringing the police  ;D ;D

Omegas weren't exactly numerous when in production either.

Plan to keep mine for a good while yet.

Could you tell it was armoured as it went past (and if so, how?)
or is it a vehicle you are familiar with from your (previous?) life?

They're quite obvious Egg - the windows always give it away.

Although I haven't driven that particular vehicle (I'm familiar with the unit it's attached to) I've driven enough of them over the years to be thankful that I don't have to do so any longer. ;D ;D

i think its more why you'd need to be bulletproof rather than the car itself   :o

Depending on the application and duty type they can be pigs to drive.

On general duties most vehicles will have at least an observer in addition to the driver, however most police drivers will also be observant for things of police interest other than whatever is required for simply driving the vehicle.

In an un-armoured vehicle this doesn’t pose much of a problem, however there are difficulties intrinsically involved when driving armoured vehicles which make this a more arduous task as they’re heavier and dynamically less agile than soft-skinned vehicles.

Couple these facts with dividing one’s concentration between driving the vehicle safely and observing, the fatigue factor begins to become evident at a much earlier time than otherwise.

If external body armour is worn (depending on the theatre of operations) and long weapons are carried (in addition to pistols) the slight reduction in interior space – in older vehicles the considerable reduction in space - begins to grate after a while.

In other duties such as CPU work the concentration levels need to be much higher especially when other factors such as the status of the passenger/s, their comfort and the inevitable conversations between them can cut across the driver’s concentration quite readily.

Generally speaking, driving these vehicles carries increased responsibility which is Ok for a time, but gets old very quickly when it needs to be done day in and day out - having said that, were it not for these vehicles many of us would not be present to bitch about them today.

There's my two and two 2.2s within 400 metres apart from that I don't see many. I've seen a weird one with tribal type stickers clagged all over it, and some idiot who bombed out the petrol station as I drove past as if to say 'look at me I've got an Omega too and it's better than yours' even though it was a chavved up shed. Apart from that I don't really take notice of anything less than MV6 spec as I float along in the comfort of my Elite looking down on all the minions! Mwahahahahaha

When I was in NI you could spot them miles off, the Omegas and the older shape vectras. As DD said it was all in the windows, especially the rear quarters. There was loads of them cruising the streets, mainly Omegas, red, white and blue of course! Seriously! Although I've never seen another Omega the same shade red as the ones the PSNI had. I used to go in PSNI Maydown (traffic HQ) and saw loads of them parked up. Then my eyes fell upon one of the scariest cars I'd ever seen, it was 2003 at the time. If Darth Vader drove a car this would be it. A black Mitsubishi Legnum bodykitted up. It looked mean. There was a few of them actually. That was a sight to behold.
