I'm sure someone will know the answer...
Mate of mine gave me a BB 8520 to get it work with a giffgaff sim....
Tried a sim to start with.....came up with X next to signal strength.....i suspected it was locked to vodoo .....so payed an unlocking comp on the net to send me an unlock code for it. They sent me two codes....so i tried the first one.....and it seemed to unlock it....it got signal strength....gprs...and now say giffgaff as the network.
But it refuses to make and accept calls....
Service status says voice calls - not avaiable
Connection - not connected
Tried my giffgaff sim and another o2 sim in it.....but still the same.....
Then i thought it might be imei barred.....so i payed another comp on the net to check it.....came back imei ok.....
Now im lost as to whats wrong with it :-/
Could it be the unlock code hasnt properly unlocked it :-/
Tho if i type in the code to see whats locked.....it says everything is disabled.....which i think means everything is unlocked :-/
Any ideas??

How did you manage to do that, if phone is barred then no sort of fix or information is available for it. i would advise put the original sim your mate was using (OR Tmob-Voda)and see if you can make calls, if not then i assume it is blocked. :y

I paid a website £1.99 to check the imei number and it came back as not barred.
Problem is i carnt put the original voda sim in it, as i dont have it.....i was assuming it was locked to voda, coz the background screen is the voda symbol/colours.

Take it into a vodafone shop and ask them to try it they have spare sims, Nothing to lose my son has the 8520 great phone tho Good luck, I think giffgaff is o2 so if the phone is showing vodafone then i would say it is still locked,

Vodafone have all their phones with their own theme/background, as im sure you might have seen. some even have a vodafone sticker on the front/back of the phone.

try pushing the button next to the centre scroll button to bring the menu up and go to manage connections,in there you can check and uncheck mobile connections also yer could have a look in options and then mobile network,i could be wrong but ive just looked at mine and i think its worth a try

Do you have to do a software update (via pc cable) after unlocking on these? (I know you do on other phones) in order to get the generic software installed (and overwrite the Voda stuff)
-
i didnt think you could unlock a blackberry with just a code :-/
i thought it had to be linked to a comp with unlocking software, i.e any mobile phone market stall which is approx £7.50, at least that way you can try your new sim in it straight away to see whether it is working :y

I think a different rom might be an idea to remove the voda branding but would have expected it to make calls if it wasn't network locked.
Surely any voda sim should pick up signal and let you know if it's working or not.

Correct, phone needs to be connected to a PC, and done that way. inputting just a code will not work
Had a 8310 on 'Vodamoan', and got it unlocked for £10 at the local phone shop, he had to do it via PC, and let me try my Virgin sim in it to make sure it was unlocked before paying for it. :y

Thanks for the replies guys.....i did try wiping it clean....with a tool i downloaded from the net....seemed to work coz the phone refuse to start up after that.
Then i let it have a chat with BB desktop manager...which decided it need its os reinstalling......so i downloaded version 5 for the 8520 (o2 version) and let it install that......phone boots again but still shows the vodo background on the screen!! work that one out!
So think im of to a phone shoppy tomorrow and let them have a go at it :y

Phone shop sorted it :y
Apparently I had unlocked it, but somehow the 'radio' on it had got upset....phone shop properly wiped and started again with it.....cost £20 but at least it was wiped properly as it hasnt got the vodoo background on the screen now :y
