Title: Greece to leave the euro?
Post by: Nickbat on 06 May 2011, 23:24:41
Maybe it's a case of smoke without fire ( ;)), but with Greece looking ever more likely by the day to default on its debts, could this be the first domino to fall?

Should there be any substance to this it would certainly create after shocks across the Euro Zone.

I suppose it was bound to happen: After all, for how long can money be thrown at a fundamentally intractable problem without things spinning out of control?

Indeed, Den, it may be a story without substance but, what is interesting, is the fact that it is not being laughed out of court. A few years ago a country leaving the Eurozone would have been unthinkable, but now the prospect, albeit strenuously denied, is given some legitimacy by the seriousness attached to both rumour and denial. In other words, it could happen.  :o

Lets hope so. If it is going to happen it will be strenuously denied right up until the point of it happening. :y

Oh, yes, Albs. The markets have sniffed something...the politicians will deny it until their denials become untenable then....... ;)

Reminds me of Yes Minister - "Only when something is officially denied, that we know it to be true"
(Or something like that - From Sir Humph)

As you suggest, the first domino? I imagine that the European Bank will be heavily encouraged to make financial intervention to prevent this.......

Oh well, here's to the thought of 10 Francs to the £ again.............. ::)

Aah but there's nothing like a bit of cowardice, avarice and greed to keen the senses sufficiently to spot potential problems on the horizon.

Markets, and how they're driven by this desire to accumulate wealth, impinge on every aspect of our everyday lives from the cost of the fuel we use to the price of a chocolate bar, so it would be inadvisable to ignore these rumours.

That said, there's little that realistically can be done should we wish action taken to deal with it as, not only have we (the ordinary Joe) been done up like kippers in relation to the effects of those individuals manipulating the markets for their own gain, but also by those In the EU who continually believe that such problems can be dealt with by the liberal application of large amounts of money.

Yes, I think so Nick.

It also highlights the precarious underpinnings that the EU rests upon.

Despite all the talk, the trappings of empire and the seemingly endless availability of money, one or two defaulters could indeed knock the whole idea of a single currency (and more) into a cocked hat.

That is just an emotive, not factual, comment. Everything has a market and the possibility of future events always affects current price.

Besides which, don't you buy and sell comics for a living? Are you not running a market? Do you not buy as cheaply as possible and sell at the highest price you think the market will bear?

I suppose if you were offered a first edition Beano, you'd do the right socialist thing and sell it on at zero profit. No? ....I didn't think you would.

Something hyprocritical about your comments, methinks.  ;)

Who said anything about ripping off customers? Recheck my post. As always, you put words in the mouths of others.  ::) ::)

You run your business by buying goods and selling them at a higher price, yet you constantly rant against the market economy.

Interesting.

At work we get involved with EU funded projects and at the moment. all research teams in Greece are having to inform the government of thier work, which is being 'evaluated'

Fantastic stuff.

If I was Greek and had loads of money, right now I would be buying as much gold as I could.

IF it happens it will be a major boost for tourism. Don't book your holiday to the sun just yet!

Greece will almost certainly default on its debt. If Portugal and Ireland do the same we can kiss our loans goodbye.  :o
