Post by: Lazydocker on 27 April 2011, 22:08:30

I've been on a morphine substitute for the last 3 weeks (along side the other pain killers as well!), although I try not to take it during the day if I can help it ::)

Shake me at the moment and I rattle ;D ;D

At the risk of sounding quite unkind, have your teeth started to rot yet?

Watch out for the meth and its substitutes.  It really does a number on teeth.  One of the easy ways to spot a user/ex-user, IMHO.

ps - hope you get the back sorted soon.  You have an as yet unknown appointment with a 3.2 estate....   ;)  best buddy, best mate, in the making....   :P   ;D

Not completely unknown ::) ;) I'm just waiting for final feedback from Cliffob about tank fitting (he's doing an estate at the moment) and a short, fat, shouty bloke as to whether we have completely cured the lag issue ;) (so far, so good on that subject :y)

As for teeth... Not yet! But mine aren't in the best condition TBH :-[ I'm totally and utterly scared of dentists and haven't been for much longer than I care to admit ::)

3 screws into the spine (3 different vertebra) to then stop the problem one from moving out of position :o :o

Sounds similar to what my mother had done a few years back.  It was experimental back then and she can no longer touch her toes but the pain and the temper that went with it have all but gone  :y

Good luck with that..... by coincidence I am also having an MRI on Wednesday next week also.  Looking to confirm a diagnosis of crohn's

I can't touch my toes anyway! ;D ;D ;D He said he'd rather not do surgery but it may well be required... L1 Vertebra is well and truely out of alignment, forward by about 1/4 from where it should be :o :o

Good luck on Wednesday Guffer... But you're not sharing the bed with me! ::) :P ;D

Hopefully be done at the local Private Hospital. The Spinal Team at Ipswich (both NHS and Private) is one of the best in the country (after Stoke Mandeville of course) so feel pretty safe in their hands :y :y

No clue to underlieing cause yet then? Injury or condition? Hence the scan ?
Title: Re: Tomorrow may be the Day of Reckoning.
Post by: feeutfo on 29 April 2011, 10:12:02
L1 is higher up than I thought.

With mine, if laid flat on back, prolonged tensing of stomach muscles helps, sometimes there's a click if tensed hard enough. Which helps. But mine is lower down than yours.

1/4" is a lot.  :o

I think it's probably years of abuse :-[ :-[

The scan is for confirmation that the problem is the "slipped" vertebra and not a prolapsed disc further up the spine. Hopefully he'll just get on with it afterwards... Was talking about (perhaps) trying spinal injections first, although they're only about 60% effective and will probably only delay the surgery :-/ :-/

My mistake... L5! Problem is between L4, L5 and S1 ::) ::) Right at the base.

Not 1/4", although (thinking about it that's about right!) but 1/4 of the spine! It does explain why it's so bloody painful ::) ::)

Old lady over the road had an injection for long running sciatica. She's bombing around now.

Plus another mate had one for an injury, which worked once they got the right vertebrae, the muppets.

Yep... But even the consultant said, looking at the x-ray, that it may not be worth trying because of the vertebra that is out of position :-/ :-/

Once he's got the scan results we'll have a better idea what course of action to take. I have made it clear that I am on a restricted time scale and that I would rather go for the most likely fix than try things first

Already got the X-Rays (privately at the Chiropractors) which is where the evidence of the "slip" can be seen. I'm paying for the MRI scan because I may be able to apply to a charity for payment of treatment costs... It's in my interest to speed this along, especially as there is a very real danger that my employer will give me Medical Severance if things don't progress more rapidly :(

good luck

I'm off to docs for some more happy pain pills in a bit
feel like iv been hit with a sledge hammer between my shoulder blades

my upper back has kicked off this week

re MRI scans

thing is m8 there not as conclusive as they make out
or people assume

every one over a certain age will have disk abnormality's on a MRI some will hurt some wont

if you MRI 100 people only ten of em had pain others were fine

Ill guarantee you that if you gave a consultant the 100 MRI scans

they couldn't pick out witch ones had pain with out seeing them and seeing when they go ouch

Well... That wasn't an experience I'd like to repeat any time soon :o Especially paying the bill afterwards! Was a bit annoyed that they demanded I had X-rays of my eyes (due to previous metal fragments which I assured them was removed OK) and then charged me £104 for the privilege!  >:( >:( On top of the £420 they charged for the scan :o :o

I'm not claustrophobic, but it was a little unpleasant. I hope they had a bigger tunnel for Guffer though or he might get stuck :-X ::) :P ;D

Got an appointment with the consultant tomorrow to discuss the results, although I know that they aren't exactly perfect, and get some idea what can be done to put it right :y

I know why they were so cautious about the metal fragment, but wish I'd just ticked "no" as I know it was completely removed at the time... The bloke picked it out with a pin and a cotton bud!

TBH, I was more annoyed that I was billed so much for it.. They didn't even mention an extra charge >:( >:(

Mine went well.  I didn't realise that I was having both intravenous and gastric contrasts, apparently the daddy of mri scans.  The biggest surprise was the buscopan of which I had 4 viles!  It was intended to relax the gut (still not farting with confidence) but the side effects were horrific. My vision was so blurred I could not read a clock or a huge banner outside the hospital front door. Also I was so hungry due to the fasting prior to the procedure so I went to the cafe for brunch. I couldn't read the menu and had to get an old man to read it for me!

Oh and lazytinker I fit in mine no problems and no claustraphobia yer cheek get!

I couldn't read the menu and had to get an old man to read it for me!

Oh and lazytinker I fit in mine no problems and no claustraphobia yer cheek get!
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Sounds like my experience was more pleasant than yours! But it should, hopefully, be worth it for you and give a confirmed diagnosis.

I'm off to the hospital in about an hour for the results and to discuss the way forwards

Well, good news is he doesn't think that a double fusion (which is what he was thinking of) will be hugely beneficial  :y Recommends spinal injections (cortisone and aesthetic) in 2/3 places to "reset" the nerves and should be up and about within a week of having them done :y

A huge relief felt here and the knowledge that I should be fully on my feet within 10 weeks or so :y :y

Of course, there is the chance that it won't fix it but more likely to be the result we're after than surgery. He basically thinks I've got a Nerve that has "Crashed" and wants to do a "Hard Reset" :y :y

Might even be able to make the Lakes meet yet :y :y

Can't they bank the injections in now then? Or am I being naive again?

As you can tell, I'm not gay enough to do doctors and nurses...  ...OK, I'll give you the nurses :P

Not quite a simple injection... Done under full sedation as it's directly into the nerve root ;)

Seriously, LD, I hope this marks the beginning of the end of this painful episode. :y

m8 dont work your self up on the injections
i hope they work, but they dont work for everyone
its not always a magic cure

but it is for many

backs are funny things
before you consider a fusion there other options

like killing the nerve or there having success with implanted simulators now

what have they said was the original cause of the pressure on the nerve

I had a poped disk at L4-L5 it took a year to shrink back
Title: Re: Tomorrow may be the Day of Reckoning.
Post by: Lazydocker on 06 May 2011, 12:43:39
There is some disc degeneration and L1 is slightly displaced, but the MRI shows plenty of space for the nerve roots to pass through. He thinks I trapped the nerve when my spine twisted (which is what originally happened) and it's "faulty".

I know the injections aren't a guarantee but he's pretty confident and doesn't think a double fusion will be as effective. I'm keeping a positive attitude over it :y He's also said that it doesn't look like I will do myself any mischief so, if I can stand the pain, I can be a little more active :y Obviously I'm not going to start doing too much but I can, at least, get on with my life a little more :y :y

So... PMA and injections will hopefully see me back on my feet and fully fit within 10 weeks or so, possibly quicker if the price is right! ;D ;D

Spoilt for choice! Thinking it'll need 2 weekends being a new one to us, although it does mean that we'll know what we're doing when the bonny gold one appears ::)

Might see about coming over your way at the end of the month, depending on whether I've managed to get the other general stuff done/organised.

that's better news then mu

looks like you pinched the nerve a bit and it need time to setel down a bit and the injections may well do that well

mine is different i have scoliosis a curvature of spine
and a rotation of the spine

so you get press all over the place and bits poping now im older

If i start looking at futions its like having T3 to L4 or longer fused solid

like i said too doc Fook that Till i run out opiates to try  :y ;D

That was my thinking... I wonder if KW and Gixerboy have any plans? ::) ::)

I'll be preparing the loom, the way we did yours, in advance (that reminds me, I'll need the injector wire colours from you ::)) so there'll be no piggybacks to go in and I'll have a manifold pre-prepared with nozzles (oh yeah... Best speak to KW too ::)) that I'll just throw my injectors onto. That should make the front end doable in a day really, although I might need to do some other engine stuff at the same time ::)

Oh... Just remembered that I need to get a bit of pipework from Albs too as I'll be binning the Aux Coolant circuit like we did on TBE :y

I have his pictures (some are in the Tank Options Thread) and a lot of info from him on what he had to do, hence the thinking that it may be better to go with a slightly smaller tank for ease of fitting) which I will be making into a "How To" in the future, but not until after I've done an estate myself so I actually know what I'm talking about ::) ::)
