Title: 'Tyre Bomb' (Pyrolosis)
Post by: Debs. on 20 May 2011, 22:14:10
......a sobering video to watch and even the heat from a dragging-brake disc/drum can be enough to begin the thermo-chemical cascade ("runaway-polymerisation"). :o

You might remember this incident: `
"A women was killed last year by a car tyre. Apparently they had a slow flat, that had been driven on for some time before deciding to change it, the boot was full so she, put it on her lap, while her bloke drove to get it repaired, IIRC they were off on holiday. Anyway the tyre exploded killing her in front of him. Tragic!" :'(

:o :o Sobering indeed Debs, I remember that incident.  :(

Something similar may have happened to me, on a smaller scale - I had a mountain bike on the back of my car and one of the wheels was rather carelessly placed in line with the hot exhaust gases. Heard a big bang from the back of the car and the tyre and wheel were both completely shredded  :(

Glad he said removing the valve won't help...

Had an experience with this a few years ago with a Blue Circle cement trailer. It was the old style tanker with tandem axles running the first generation, huge(!) super singles (425s iirc). Had come out of Weardale loaded using the Alston road and got to the Moss just above Carlisle for my break. No sign of any problems even though I'd just come over the Alston road (Veeery hilly, lol) and was reversing into (Reversing!) the only available space when the N/S/R  tyre blew! Ah nearly spilt ma tea, lol! The brake had been dragging which obviously generated the heat, but the brakes werent smoking, even though they had a good workout over the road I'd just come. The heat in the tyre carcass was unbelievable although the brake drum was relatively cool. I've only ever had three blowouts in 25 years of driving but by god that was the loudest I'd had lol!

On another note, can any of the Larry drivers on here remember the old split rim wheels of old and how many people had been killed or injured by them? Thank god for modern technology with the perfect example of how easy it is nowadays for the tyre fitters to change the tyre without having to take the wheel off. Wasnt like that in Hector Brocklebanks day, lol!       Fash!

Split rim wheels are a nightmare!

Most of our military vehicles were of this style, our mechanics hated them... that was in the late 80's though ::)

So what's the minimum temp that sets this off. Must be 3-400 degrees or so...?
