Title: Caravan fridge
Post by: geoffr70 on 20 May 2011, 21:47:24
Hi peeps, got my electrics sorted in Kevin the Caravan today, but my fridge isn't working. I've only tried it on 240v. It's getting power to the 12/240/off switch. Do they have some sort of pressure switch that prevents it from coming on if refrigerant is low or non existant?

Anyone got any ideas on problem or common faults? Or is it just old and bust?

Thanks peeps

How have you tested it for not working?  :-/
Leave it powered up over night & see if it's chilled before you condemn  it.
You know it doesn't have a compressor?  :-/ It's an absorption fridge & uses heat to circulate the refrigerant.  :y

Also, your fridge/caravan needs to be quite level for it work. They say that leaving absorption fridges upside down fro a few hours can revive them. ;)

Ah that's very interesting. Thanks Andy!

There's still hope yet. I condemned it after not hearing the compressor. I know now and will leave it overnight!

Thanks

Well it was in 1980 ish..... :D :D :D

You can't re-gas the refrigerant in any fridge whether it's gas or electric that's moving it round the system. The pipe work is for the calor/butane/propane gas that you use to heat the refrigerant.............. completely separate from the fridge's refrigerant.   :y :y

Thanks Henry, is it worthwhile fitting a CO detector?
Title: Re: Caravan fridge
Post by: henryd on 21 May 2011, 00:15:25
our van is about 7 years old and has a detector fitted from new (I think as van was a year old when purchased),not a bad idea to have one in such a confined space

I wouldn't like to think how old my caravan is! I fitted a new carpet today, got the eletrics working (well - apart from the fridge!!) then gave it a thorough clean, and fixed the storage box door. It's alright for £150 :y

Bloody pikeys, you should only be allowed on the roads between 2am and 5am.  Grrrr.

Can't you do camping properly, and get a tent?

I haven't tried it yet! :-/ my garden is separate from the house and sometimes it awkward having a power lead across. It's my land but I have to provide access for other people, even though they constantly static steer and ruin my Tarmac! Will try it soon as and report back, thanks Andy!

Also make sure if after you've moved it, that the flue lines up again, they can move & direct those lovely fumes into your van for that long, long, long sleep...

slow down with the removal of fridge, first thing to check before you ever do that is to turn fridge on and then go outside and remove the bottom grill to gain access to back of fridge,on the right hand side there is the gas burner and a silver tube going upto the flue,a few inch up there is two wires attached to the elements which are pushed into the tube(one is 240v the other 12v)in a short period you should be able to feel heat if you touch the tube(the 240v gets bloody hot).if you have the old type covers you can leave the fridge on for an hour or two and you should be able to feel heat around the flue without removing anything.most common fault on fridge is failed element so check that before removing fridge and breaking any seals :y
