Are they any good :-?
I have had BT Infinity installed, and according to BT tests they reckon on 34.7 mbps. I have tried anumber of the different sites doing tests and some confirm 35mbps but one came up with 15mbps, and two with 27mbps. :(
Have tried all these sites repeatedly with the same results. :y
We are fibred to the cabinet here, and its situated at the end of the road. The exchange is only two streets away also.
The engineer who fitted it said my connections and setup were top notch and I had the full 40mbps coming in, but would get a bit less than that due to something techinal :y
-
www.speedtest.net is one of the better ones :y
-
Ill be doing the same next week. :D
given the speeds to your house, there are a lot of slowing factors between you and the speed testers, so wouldnt put too much faith in them.
id probably be using www.speedtest.net or www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html
-
Just tried both your links, Jimbob...Speedtest...35mbps
ThinkBroadband..........17mbps :o :o :o
-
If you can't actually tell, in normal usage, whether you've got the speed you require (or not), then what rather difference does it make?
-
Speeds I can dream of! Sometimes I even get a full 1 MBPS from my BT broadband :-[ You tube and the like are out of bounds to me!
-
Mine runs at mid 30s down and 7 up but then drops to 3 down and I have to reset the router & modem

Aye, with the speeds you now have, you are probably no longer the weakest link in the chain, so accurate speed tests are hard.
If you have newsgroup, or similar service that you know you can max out, that will be your true test of actual throughput.

thats the sloweest ive had normally bang on 50 meg

Mines 12.7 down and 0.95 up which is a lot better than it was (2 down and 0.2 up)

Speed testers are pretty pointless. Virtually every ISP that fettles traffic (virtually all of them), will artificially make themselves look good on popular ones like speedtest.net
-
I would add, you know if its running sluggish ;D

Yup, it's a very easy trick to pull.

Virgin media recently had (ahem!) "network difficulties" which caused national access/latency problems for it`s cable-BB customers; in some areas for a week or so!.......V.M appeared to tackle the situation, by simply denying access to all the usual speed-testing `sites.......
"Problem: what problem!" ;)

Sadly, thats been a recurring tactic of VM, and NTL before... ...and a reason I won't use them

You're not wrong there, I only suffered for a few hours so that didn't really bother me as things do go wrong from time to time.
They also refuse to accept there are a few issues with their "superhub", even though Google brings up tens of thousands of hits for god knows how many customers suffering from the same issues.

Indeed, but I think denial that anything had gone wrong is a poor response. I'd much rather see a honest response, whatever the cause was.

Do CS use phrases like 'isolated incidents' and 'the vast majority are fine' :P ;D

You have obviously worked in first line ;D ;D
I did end up talking to one level 2 tech who openly admitted the superhub was "a piece of crap" (his words) and that VM were moving away from Netgear because of all the issues that were arising, but my money is still on the problems being caused because VM can't rebrand/customise the Netgear firmware properly.

Nope, only ever had to clear up the mess that 1st and 2nd line cause ;D
In fairness to VM, the base NG firmwares are a bit buggy, probably why slowly going over to OpenRouter firmware :-/

I'm very annoyed with NetGear, once one of the best! Now terrible. >:(
