Title: Online Backups
Post by: tunnie on 12 June 2011, 12:17:11
Anyone had any experience of:

http://www.livedrive.com/ForHome

They appear to have gained a lot of customers now Mozy stopped their unlimited service, although willing to pay for a decent service. It is owned by EMC Corp.

http://mozy.co.uk/home/

I've got backups in place at home, but thinking if there is a fire/burglary, I need external backups. As all my photos from all my trips and things are store here.

Any recommend an online backup they use?

You have 2 homes, offsite backup is easy and free ;D

Not sure if i'm being 'Anal' Mark, but there is something about handing all your 'Personal' stuff over to an anonymous third party ont tinternet which doesn't appeal to me tbh :-/
Any stuff I have that is irreplaceable is copied to various different storage media & stored in a fireproof safe at home alongside Birth Certs; Passports etc with backup copies at my Sons home which just about covers most eventualities short of a Nuclear incident! ;D

I will just be photos.... just a last resort if something happens here.

Guess a 1TB drive at home is a very valid point!

ISP webspace?  OK, not guaranteed, but the chances of your house burning down the same day your ISP loses data.... ??

Good point, as I have two ISP's. Think both offer solutions, not sure on data limits though.

I'm pretty sure I lost more than that when creating an 8TB RAID array (level 5).
I'm not "au fait" with your financial situation, but if your daily catchphrase is "would you like a large fries with that sir", then I'd put one backup on HDD and another copy on optical media.

If you happen to earn more because you didn't bunk off school, then keep one copy on a RAID 5 minimum backup media, and another on tape that is kept off site.

Disclaimer: Other fault tolerant RAIDs available ;D :P

Joking aside, I would imagine that as he only needs data protection, not data availability, I would suggest a single backup on a seperate drive in his other home should suffice.  Be unfortuante to lose both disks at same time - less likely than losing 2 disks in a disk array (as no similar environmental issues like knackered fans).  3rd disk if they are *really* important.

cheers all. i think a 1 or 2TB drive i keep at my parents would do the trick. as TB mentions i dont need to access it. Just a backup if the something happens to my flat.

But surely they'll let you take the hard drive when they repossess the flat & contents Mark? ;D ;D ;D ;)

Considering my income has increased by 35% in recent months that's unlikey. ;)

But part of my reasons for buying flat I did, I'd rent it out before repossession.  10 mins walk to 5 different stations, some of which are in zone 2 make it an easy option to rent out :)

I would go and buy a NAS box, plug it in at your "remote location" and rsync to it every so often, personally. :y

Does that mean you can afford the missing two cylinders now?

Yes, but perhaps not the increase in the laundry bill. ;D

I have always considered an upgrade to a V6 Elite, one with all the toys. But my 2.2 has in 6 years, never let me down, now with gas its uber cheap to run, it cruises at 80 just as well as the V6 (just takes a little longer to get there)

But what it comes down to is selling my 2.2, its worthless, but its had fresh oil every 3k since about 90k (now on 155k) I know its history and runs well, it also owes me nothing.

It also tows a dead V6, very nicely  :-X

Fair point. A car that's been looked after is worth more to you than anyone else is going to pay for it.

Very true indeed.

Though I did laugh at the laundry comment ;D

rsync probably isn't that ideal at that amount of data, esp over ADSL.

More importantly, can you see a point and click useless student being able to modify those rsync configs ;D

Thats why you should keep it going until its not worth fixing.  Apart from wear, particularly pot 1 (and I'd hope yours should be good from that respect with sensible oil changes, and not much thrashing), those things will go on for a while yet.

That said, yours is approaching the dead cert HG change...
