Sorry to be negative but how much energy/resources, was/is being used to produce these millions of monitors.

Just my useless opinion.

I hate those energy monitors.. all they seem to be good for is scaring the elderly into refusing to switch on any appliance or use the heating.

The 90-something year old neighbour of my mother is like that, and I notice my mother is starting to do the same thing..

Damn things should be banned.  >:(

no your right, ive always thought instead of spending on these monitors they could give you cheaper gas/leccy and same with halifax bank, they must of spent millions on advertising when they could give better rates on there products instead

I suspect the taxpayer cops the cost of these monitors - there must be a grant or something.

The monitor uses power - my psu gets quite warm ;D

Agreed, if the type that only use a current transformer on the meter tail, so can't measure real power. They over-read horrendously on devices (such as TVs on standby, as it happens) that have a poor power factor.

We need to be building nuclear reactors, not navel gazing about TVs on standby. ;)

Nevertheless, if you do want to know what an appliance is doing, I can recommend one of these:

They do a decent job of reporting the true consumption of a device, and are sensitive enough to accurately measure an appliance on standby.

Yes, we need a coherent, realistic national plan for assured generation in the future.

This dalliance with green issues not only has disadvantaged this country but has also, quite perversely, succeeded in in generating wealth for those foreign energy providers who now control one of our most basic needs, those in government and their lackeys who have promoted this outrageous policy and has, most frustratingly, led to this sage advice from the present Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change;

"If any energy company hits you with a price increase, you can hit them back where it hurts – by shopping around and voting with your feet." (1)

One thing sure, Mr. Paul-Huhne will have no difficulty in meeting these looming increases in energy costs given his wealth and the generous pension from that discredited behemoth of the self-interested, presently masquerading as a parliament to the people of this nation.

A word of warning about these - and the BG one in particular.

They OVEREAD on low energy lighting - try doing a test and you will see.

There is a valid reason for it to do with the power factor of the load - but basically they cant be trusted with LE lighting.

"normal" items are ok though.
