Just went for a short walk to do a couple of tasks, and, following a discussion with a member on Saturday evening, it struck me how lucky I am to live where I do, on the edge of a quiet small market town.
Apart from the birds singing away, it was silent. No car noise, no voices, nothing. Just the birds.
I accept many will prefer the hustle bustle of city life, but the tranquility here suits me perfectly (thats not to say I wouldn't emigrate tomorrow if circumstances worked).
So, are you a townie/city dweller, longing for a quieter life? Or a country person missing the buzz of city life? Or are you content with exactly where you live?

Lincolnshire is very quiet too TB. Add to that we have a low crime rate and (almost) affordable property prices.
The only place I would prefer to live is Wakefield. STMO is soooooo lucky.. :)

For me, Lincolnshire is a bit too far removed from civilisation, though can understand the attraction, even if its not quite for me.
Goldie, my short lived 2.5 Elite came from just the other side of Spalding. Took hours to get there and back, and its not really that far.
I have the benefits of the M1 being 15 miles, the M40 being 6m, and the A43 dual carriageway linking the 2 being 1m ;D

All three.. Or was, there is defo a transition going on. I think it's an age thing. Yoof cope with the bustle of towns better i think. I'm growing to hate it tbh. I haven't been into Reading town centre shopping for years.
Where we are it's necessary to have easy m4 access any further away/nearer town and local traffic adds to the journey considerably. It's purely a practical location. Which means road noise. M4, local by pass, yoof doing donuts at the roundabouts at midnight. Plus there's Heathrow flight path, the red baron, light aircraft, plod chopper on occasion what a nuisance that is. Although I miss Concorde. It was always a pleasure to have that rattle the door knocker twice a day.
Don't get me wrong, non of it's intrusive noise wise. Your just aware of it. Like the London rumble. It's always there. Constant. Never goes away. Unless the m4 is shut, then there's no point going anywhere.
It makes it all the more silent when visiting rural areas.
We visited Swanage(?) once. On the way we took in some sights, one of which was a very large hill, which we walked up and sat at the top. Watched the view, and the people, tourists come and go(noticed that we where the only British people around for a good half hour :-? ) then noticed they had all gone. Silence. H didn't notice at first and suggested we go too. I said your joking, listen it's silent. Nout but the wind, such as it was, the sun and the birds. Warblers mostly. :). I fell asleep contented. :)

I'm originally from a far more sophisticated part of the country..... ;D ;D
I've encouraged the locals to speak without chewing a piece of straw and holding a pig .... ;) ;D

I would like to live in a village in later life as I very much grew up in a rural location.
At the moment, being in a very good area on the very edge of a major city works well for us as its not noisy, low crime and a 10 minute walk and you are in the open country side. On the flip side, a 10 minute journey and you are in the city centre!
-
Countryside for me.
Busy as hell here yesterday. heard
Two vehicles all day. One was a fellow forum member.
Crested skylarks, bee eaters, eagles, choughs, a Montague Harrier most days.
Wouldn't want to live in "civilisation" again ;D ;D We know we are lucky.

You mean Wakefield is lucky to have me living here........don't you? :-?

I grew up on the edge of Belfast and as a yoof I loved the busy/hustle bustle etc. Now I live in a little quiet village and it suits me fine. Apart from the tw*t who regularily uses a large petrol strimmer to trim the weeds etc. around the edge of the allotments at the end of my garden. I get to bed at 9am after a nightshift and he fires up the strimmer around 930am.
One day, I will shoot him. ::)
Still have the occasional trip to Londinium for a bit of hustle/bustle. ;)

Although from Scotland my wife's a London lass and we lived in Herts,Beds for many years before comming overe here where her parents are from.
I miss London sometimes esp. the West End Theatres so much so we're over for a top up probably in August , but not the South of England where I felt almost suffocated by people.
But now , I live half way up a mountain away from all the madness of the past ,I can easily go a week without seeing another person if I choose or pop into the town and enjoy the company of many friendly people who have welcomed me into their community .
In seven years I have never heard of any break ins or cars being stolen and the only pests I have now are the bloody deer .
I never lose sight of how fortunate I am and hope you all find the same peace someday.

If I win £89million tomorrow (;D) then I'd be buying a nice sized house in many acres of land, just so there's nobody around me for miles..
Having said that, I love being in the middle of some cities - not London, I hate the place, but Tokyo or Taipei? I'd happily live there, smack in the middle of the city.
-
I love where we live. Just on the edge of a tiny city and 15 mins from the mountains. I've never lived more than about 5 miles from here and that's just fine.
Our boys school, though in a rough area, is nice with a total pupil count of 120 which is tiny in comparison to others.
Though I could quite happily shoot our adjoining neighbours and their dogs! >:( Or at the very least fill their car exhaust with expanding foam! ;D
Once the boys are through their education I would love to move further out into the mountains.
I'm not into big cities and get a bit agoraphobic when there are no mountains about, I'm uncomfortable in a flat landscape.
One thing we do lack here is a nice family pub with beer garden that we could walk to. We only have several very dodgy pubs to choose from. :(
It's generally quiet, only real noise coming from the aircraft factory up the road and that's not constant.
-
My next property will be a house in country with a garage, as per other thread. Need to wait a few years yet though :(

I dont think I have ever been anywhere, quite as beautiful, peaceful and tranquil as county Kerry. I found the place to have an almost spiritual atmosphere about it, despite the fact that I am not a particularily spiritual person.Your a very lucky man to have made your life there. :y

Explains the in-breeding though................

Like Varche and Omegatoy, we opted for a life outside the UK and boy did we strike lucky.
I grew up in a small village that has now become part of greater London, well it seems like it, Crowthorne, home of Broadmoor hospital!! After that, joined up and was in Plymouth for a good few years, enjoyed that at the time. Posted up to Scotland, Arbroath, smallish town but very busy. Fell in love with the Angus Glens, used to escape there as much as possible with the boys when they were little.
Moved further out into Angus farming country, small village called Letham, 1 hotel, 1 pub, 1 Spar shop, nice quiet-ish life.
Now, it couldn't be more tranquil. On the eastern edge of the end of the Sierra Nevada on a south facing mountainside called the Alpujarras.... back garden faces south as well, occasional dog barking, the moorish built church bells ring only during daylight hours apart from midnight, eagles/falcons and lower down, bee eaters, larks and on a sunday plenty of cars as all the relatives of the old uns that live here appear for a knees up. Loving it

Whats wrong with the Pin, you snob, you could always stand on the footpath outside with the rest of the regulars ;D ;D
I miss my home town which is where Ljay and Jimbob live now and the City just down the road is brilliant. I detest Northwich where I live at the moment :'(

Small world... I lived in Crowthorne for several years as a young adult and my grandparents (and a lot of aunties) still do!
TB, you've been to mine... I find it very nice and love the peace and quiet. I reckon your place is just as quiet, although you have houses around you that are visible (which we don't really!).
Me... I love the countryside and have no intentions of ever moving closer to "civilisation"! :y :y

answer:
a place on earth where no human being exists >:( >:( >:( >:(

I had exactly the same thought yesterday morning when I took the dog for a walk in the sand dunes. I was stood on the top of a sixty foot dune, the sun was shining the tide was in and the only person for miles around was another dog walker down on the beach.

I struggled when we had to move away from Aylesbury, due to Mrs TB's job. Although I had been lucky enough to travel the world when I was little due to Dad's job, I grew up in Aylesbury, and will always class that as 'home'.
It was only revisiting after we moved - we have many friends still there - we realised what a pit the place had turned in to :'(. At the time, I alwasy envisaged moving back at some point, but I wouldn't want to now.
My best mate decided to up sticks from Aylesbury about a year ago, now lives about a mile from me. He too has settled very well, and very happily here. I think he chose Brackley because his parents and sister have all moved here in the last 5yrs.
Being a previously confirmed townie, I struggled initially by not having everything on my doorstep - everything is a trip into a town. But that minor inconvenience of having to be organised, for me, is worth it.
I fully accept and understand its not everyone's cup of tea, but I couldn't be more content with where I live - quiet, trouble free, peaceful, unbelievably good neighbours, community atmosphere. The only problem is Donnington lost the Britisg GP >:(

well as TB knows i lived in a very quiet village before i moved out here, until the wind was from the north that is, then you could hear the motorway and TB leaving rubber at the BP services quite regularly!!
However as i sat here listening outside for noise and apart from the birds, the noisiest thing here is my own dogs and me quad bile when im tearing around on it!!
we get up in the morning and watch the eagles flying up the theremas from the mountains, listen for the lizards scrabbling through the undergrowth, but the most important thing for me is Ze has no stress for her heart and she loves it here, and is far healthier than when in uk!!
born in london and wouldnt live there now if you paid me a million!! would consider moving back to a quiet little village, but it would have to have good access as our other one did :y
-
Interesting, I know exactly where Brackley is as i pass it often. I can't afford to live in a village although i'd love too as i was bought up in West Chiltington, W.Sussex, parents still there. Did'nt appreciate it then & moved to Worthing @ 16 just to live in a town.
Many years later i'm here in Immingham N.E Lincs & i love it. Got the best of both worlds, big rough towns & gorgeous countryside minutes away. 3 bed semi cost £39k 9 years ago, markets & local smallholding give fresh produce all year round, folk are friendly. living is cheap & no one's ever given me any bother.
I love it here. :y
-
I have lived in Maidenhead all my life (other than some uni time in london) i have always preferred the semi rural / quieter areas. It is more busy now but overall still peaceful and with good neighbours where we are.
M4 / M40 / M25 access is good so most places are easily accessible should we want to go further afield.
When i go out and visit customers sometimes i come back thinking it is still a nice place to live.
-
Living happily in a village called Catshill, Bromsgrove.
I've got the M5 & M42 either side of me but you can hardly hear them, but do hear the birds tweeting nicely most nights - very relaxing whilst sitting in the graden!
It's out in the countryside, but right next to town and 15mins from centre of Birmingham, although I don't go there unless I have too!!
-
I'm right on the edge of what they class as Solihull but Warwickshire and Worcestershire borders are only a stones throw from here.
Used to be a village but it's built up a bit more now. Given more money i'd like to have a prperty with land attached to keep horses. Not overly bothered about large houses, prefer to have a double garage and a couple of stables for my hobbies!!
-
I would love to move further out into the mountains.
I'm not into big cities and get a bit agoraphobic when there are no mountains about, I'm uncomfortable in a flat landscape.
:P `Want to buy an isolated hill-farm? ;D

I'd love to Debs, but it's a bit too far for me to commute ::) ::)

Where I live is a bit of a shithole of a town although my street is fairly quiet, but the Brecon Beacons ( a national park) is only 10 minutes away on the mountain bike.
I never get tired of being out on my own on the mountains, would love to be able to afford to live in a big farmhouse with loads of land :)
Also feel very jealous of the lucky people who have commented about their life in Spain, I'd give my right arm for that :y
-
I live in a small village set between two small market towns, it's a friendly place with few problems but we do get a lot of 'Rat Run' traffic through the top of the village, my road.. ::) but generally no real problems.... :y
Access to A1m is 5 mins and the A19 10 mins, so secluded but easy access to anywhere..... :y
-
Live on the edge of town but would rather be in the countryside
