Title: Can't believe that
Post by: Del Boy on 22 June 2011, 13:29:05
Government are giving the BBC an extra £2,000,000 in funding for the Asain & Hindu network, I thought we were skint? So as they're trying to reduce the debt in the country and keeping the fuel prices high etc, they've got money for that  >:(

ive no problem with the bbc spending a proportion of its money on ethnic programmes -afterall, ethnic minorities pay a licence fee too (no option for anyone not to if you buy a TV -which is another issue altogether!)and so the bbc should represent their interests as much as anyone elses. But youre quite right to question where the government can dig up this sort of money from given the current economic climate. Besides, in the interests of integration, shouldnt ethnic programming be more a part of the existing channels first? Surely creating a seperate network only encourages seperatism. Fine, you can still have your (non bbc)specialist channels whether it be for sport/history/natural world or "ethnic" but why should the bbc fund a seperate ethnic network, it doesnt have a seperate sports channel or a dedicated history one does it. Surely theyve enough existing channels to incorporate more ethnic programming into them without the additional expense of a new network?

My understanding is that this is to support world service broadcasts. Given the turmoil in the arab world this year has seen, broadcasting some common sense in that direction can only help matters IMHO.

Now, whether the BBC transmit common sense is another argument. :-X

While we're on the subject, you've all heard of MOBO awards! Imagine if there was MOWO, there'd be hell on about it. Not that I'm against anyone or any group, but minorities seem to get pandered too at the expense of the majority.

Perhaps the BBC know something about increasing minorities that we don't! Hence pandering to their future majority audience???
