Just another "excuse" to say we need upgrades, then shaft us with even higher fares for an already awful service! >:(

So now they are adding heat to the other fails, leaves, snow and water (dawlish warren stops the virgin trains when the track floods with tide) >:( :(

Not uncommon on the older OLE setups.
The result is reduced tension in the cables when they expand a lot in the hotter weather (remember also that the older cables will already have stretched quite a bit once they are end of life) meaning the tension weights may be at their max limit (i.e. full drop).
So, you just slow the trains down a bit to avoid the risk of pulling down the HT wires.
I notice this section is currently having the cables replaced as part of a periodic maintenance program (as they dont last forever!).
So, a no news story really.

Diesels are fine, couple of years ago in the 'big' snow, all other operators had issues, but Chilterns slow little diesels chugged through :y

Lol, yes, seen that before!
Major risk of de-railment, traction motor flash overs and resultant main gen failure!
Not a good idea on 2 million quid plus locos!

Dawlish has been closed during heavy seas since the day it was built due to the high risk of the line being washed out.
Leaves can be an issues, in bygine years track sides were cleared to avoid fires and heavy locos with high axle loads squishe the pukp out the way.
Modern lighter trains and lack of tree removal means they are a big and very real issue.

and to that newer disc brake systems, even worse. Older style systems would clean the wheel as it braked.
