Title: (Camping) Gas
Post by: Jimbob on 25 June 2011, 17:50:12
Looking to 'upgrade' from disposable gas canisters, and start using bottled stuff instead for camping (we have a bit more to run now)

Not sure whats the best way of doing it though

'calor' 4.5kg Butane bottle
campingaz R907 cylinder
other?

Anyone with much experience?

How much / easier are the options to refil?

purely for camping in this country.
Mainly to power a fridge, but also for cooking, and maybe a heater on a cold evening (occasional)

With your reputation for home produced methane it makes me wonder why you are concidering purchasing gas. If you can find a way to utilise the vapours you produce surely you would save a fortune ;)

Use it to cook sprouts and it could be self perpetuating. ;D ;D

I'd go for the calor bottles, personally - more universally available.

Check what you can get locally - it usually works out MUCH cheaper to buy at home than buy gas from the campsite.
If you can transport it, the 47kg (5ft high red bottles) are also cheaper to refill than the equivalent in smaller bottles,
and they last for ages.

Most decent plumbing centres will have connectors for any bottle you get - it's just a matter of connecting it up to the pipework.

cheers, had a feeling calor might be the best for availability (unless you go abroad?)

no- in uk.

campinggaz is usually only available at campsites.
calor gas is available at gardening centres, diy places, builders merchants, petrol stations (morrisons), etc..

aye, most the sites we use are unlikely to do gas anyway, small ones, often no shop.

always a supermarket or garage etc around.

Calor it is  :y

Plus been offered a choice of bottles off the local freegle group, so even better  :y

I use both - though the 907 type just for the gas fire.  I use 4.5kg calor for fridge and cooking, and I would recomend this :y

I use propane the 7kg bottle to run my fridge and cooking, it doesn't tend to freeze and its cheaper.
Find your nearest flo-gas supplier the 7kg is £9.60 to re-fill :y

Just been given 2 calor gas small propane bottles off freegle / freecycle.

I gather you hand these in and swap for whatever size you want.

For me, guess its the small butane bottles, dont need longevity as much as space in the car.

Just need to swap em for full ones now.

Job done, cheers all  :y

calor are a strange company, one minute they will swap any calor bottle for any size and next they will only do like for like unless theres a shortage of bottles or at the outlets discretion :y

Butane is fine for summer use, more likely to be available at camp sites and you actually get more heat per kg from butane IIRC. It doesn't work in the cold as the boiling point is much higher than propane. A couple of 4.5 kg calor butane bottles and a regulator to suit will be fine.

Having said that, if you have propane cylinders and can't swap them, they will work just as well, with an appropriate regulator (it's a different fitting on the cylinder).

Camping Gaz is available on the continent but I'm guessing if you did go abroad you'd be unlikely to need a refill unless it's a long holiday anyway, and camping Gaz is much more expensive. I find camping gaz bottles more convenient to pack, though.

For Jimbob's needs, the 4.5kg should be enough. Mine will run my fridge and the cooker for a few trips.  Can't remember the last time I changed it, gotta be 3 or 4 years back - not been camping much recently, except OOF meets (although the cooker gets well used at those!)
