Ran the run to the lakes through google maps, fine, showed a shortcut that I had wondered about..... :y
Got myself an up to date OS Map today and on closer inspection some of that shortcut may require the use of a 4x4 so will stick the the A road.....Maps rule OK... ;D ;D ;D

Yeah, if you're happy to join in the fun remotely from about half a mile away with a pair of binoculars and a megaphone that short cut will do you fine. ;D

I know I am old skool, but I can not see me ever using sat nav, that said we bought Master Vamps one for his birthday, but that may because he never joined the Scouts...... ::) ::) ::)

I'm not a lover of Sat Nav's generally, but do find them useful "in town".
Generally when planning a route, I prefer to use a map as I can "picture" the roads and markers in my head as to roughly where I am at any given time.
-
Last year, Chopsdad did make it down (and back again iirc) using that shortcut, not in an omega though, passat iirc.
I wouldnt fancy my chances thats for sure!

Been a few times to the Lake District, so the route in my head is:-
Start
Go North
When big hills appear on left turn off motorway
Drive past lots of people wearing overpriced fleeces and walking boots
When you think you have gone far enough turn a hairpin right into a field
Stop
Well it worked last year!
-
I remember the first lakes OOF meet, allthough experience of visiting the lakes many times told me to go one way the sat nav told me to go another way and I very nievely believed it :-?. It took me miles out of my way, and on the last leg tried to take me right across the middle of a farmers field :o
-
know how you feel vamps! The art of mapreading seems to be dying doesnt it? Despite my inherent "luditeness" I admit that satnavs are pretty useful for finding your way to particular places in town but personally I prefer the old fashioned way of navigating by roundabouts, garages, stores, bridges and pubs!(though,of course, this only works if someone can give you directions first ;D)I remember following one of the kids once and their satnav took us down all these one way lanes and down to a single track railway with no way to turn around. Took us twice as long to get there.

Only if you drive a "standard" car :D

Is this the a66 avoiding short cut just south of scotch corner?
Sat nags are fine, just don't expect it to drive the car for you. :)

No, it's over at the Lakes end, suggested a short cut from the A66 via country lanes to the site, I shall now keep going and follow the main road turning left onto the A591 before turning left into Dale Bottom Farm :y
Not sure which route you are talking about, but massive Roadworks from South of Ripon North, with 50mph average speed cameras in operation, will be worth it in the end though... :) :)

Good plan V, that road is only fit for 4x4s and mountain goats.

Cheers, realised that as soon as I got an OS map... :y

Same route I'm intending to take as I plan to be at my mum's in Richmond for a couple of nights before hand ;) :y

Where are you planning to come off the A1 at? Because of roadworks if you are thinking of coming off towards Bedale and on through Leyburn, and in for a leisurely drive, you may be better off coming of at Ripon and going up through Leyburn that way.....

To get to mum's I normally just come off at Skeeby as it's generally quicker :-/ :-/
Mind you, we should be getting up there late Tuesday night so should only have the Average Speed to deal with ;) ;) :y :y

Well that is at Scotch Corner, so hardly a shortcut to the A66, going north to come south ::) ::) ::) but would be the fastest route if that is what you are looking for.... :y

I'm confused... Are you talking about my route to mum's or from there to the Lakes on Thursday? :-? :-? Remember, I don't really know the area that well ;) ;)
Going up to mum's I'll nip through Skeeby, when I come out on Thursday I don't know what route I'll take to the A66 yet ::)

Yes..... :y
Your run from your Mums to the A66, you have two choices, either the way you came or a nice country run up to the the A66 on the B6274..... :y

Right, with you now :-[ ::)
I just go that way out of habit now as turning into her road if you come in from Catterick can be a little awkward, especially in a lorry or with a car on a trailer (as I was the first and third times I visited ;)) :y
Now I just go that way for ease because I know it ;) ;)

I plan to be there ;)
