Security Update for Microsoft Silverlight (KB2512827)
I have been trying to download this update for weeks but it keeps failing >:(
Anybody come across this one ?
-
Can you download manually and install, rather than rely on Windows Update.
Although, IME, once Vista/Win7 start screwing up updates, its time to rebuild....
-
Tried downloading from the windows website
No joy :(
Any idea what this update is about ?
Then again, I haven't got a bloody clue what silverlight is anyway :-[ ;D ;D

Likely to be a security patch for Silverlight. Silverlight is not dissimilar to Adobe's Flash. Some sites need Silverlight to work (not many though)
-
Click Start, type cmd in to the search box, then press Ctrl + Shift + Enter (this will give you an elevated command prompt).
At the command prompt, type net stop wuauserv, then press Enter
Type rmdir /s %windir%\softwaredistribution\wuredir, then press Enter.
Type Y to acknowledge the command.
Type net start wuauserv, then press Enter
Restart your machine, then go back to Windows Update.

If the OP has downloaded manually, would that help with this specific problem? Though I agree that WUAU does seem to screw itself up frequently on Vista+ systems.

Re started the computer with no problems.
Went back online only to find the update symbol in the taskbar.
Clicked it, only to find it asking me to download the update again.
I did as I was told only for it to fail and im back to square one :'( :'(

Any more idea's on this ?
Is silverlight somthing I can delete then totaly re instal or is it a part of vista ?
-
I would have expected the instructions I posted earlier to have rectified it for you (they obviously didn't though).
Silverlight is a browser plugin (same as Adobe Flash), so you can quite safely uninstall it and not worry about it unless you use websites that actually need it installed (the site will tell you if it does).

Throw that piece of cack known as Vista away and install Win 7 instead.
Feel free to PM me if you wish to discuss the various options of obtaining Win 7 at the right price.

Try downloading manually.
Go to http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=26488 and download runtime\Silverlight.exe and run it.
Though I suspect you will still get in trouble when the next set of updates come along.
(I should add, if you haven't been through Genuine Advantage you may be prompted to jump through that hoop).
