As above - major contract awarded to Siemens Germany by the govt. So Bombardier says it has no choice but to shed 1400 jobs. I dont know much about the situation but would be interested in the opinions of those who do. :-/
-
I have.
Very sad. Cameron's minister was on TV this morning saying that under EU rules there was nothing that could have been done to stop the contract going to the German firm. i.e. tendering has to be fair and above board to allow any EU company to bid. You can bet that foreign countries wouldn't have let it happen. Hasn't he heard of the telephone or business lunch "to let the CEO know how much Johnny Foreigner are bidding "
It isn't just 1400 odd jobs either as there are all the support jobs too - maybe another 6000 when you factor in right down to the burger van. :'( :'(

If our own government don't support our private sector I hope they get what they deserve. >:(

Everyone, and I mean everyone was saying after the banks crashed that we need to rebuild our manufacturing industry. At face value this looks like a big opportunity to do just that has been missed/ignored.
If its true that we cant avoid this due to EU rules, can someone please give me a good reason why we shouldnt withdraw from the EU at the earliest opportunity ??? :-/

Didn't Brussels always used to blather on about there not being a reverse gear? ;D
Frankly, in a vehicle with no reverse gear, I'd have been more careful where I drove forwards.

Spot the hypocrisy...

Meet the new boss, the same as the old boss. The only difference between the old lot and the new lot is an occasional empty right wing rhetorical rant, to keep the old faithfuls on side and making their £££ contributions. >:(

Theresa Villiers must be moonlighting as the MP for Dusseldorf.... :(

Been following this, they lost the Thamelink to Siemens. In my opinion his has little to do with EU, its just being used as an excuse.
Fact is Bombardier make unreliable trains, they won the Victoria Line contract for new trains. This had the best punctuality and reliability for the whole of the underground, with its 1973 stock.
Its now the most unreliable! The trains have been delivered very late and plagued with technical issues, reliability has also been worse than 1973 stock.
So when choosing contractor this must have been put against them. Do you A) give contract to someone who makes good trains, reliable & will be delivered on time, and to budget.
Or B) give it to a company which has a history of delivering late, over budget, unreliable units?
Hummmm!
Whats the point giving it to UK builder when they make a crap product?
I'd rather have Siemens trains!

Using EU rules , the contract could have been awarded to Bombardier by taking into account the location where the work was to be completed, and not just the cost factor. So the government is talking out of it's arse, because this is how Germany, and France give contacts to their own country.
We need to leave the EU ASAP, and stop the gravy train, stupid rules, immigation, and all the other crap we have to put up with.
A very good friend of mine works for Bombardier, and has done since it was British Rail Technical Services, and is hoping for his 40 year redundancy deal, he is also close to his pension. He thinks because of the cost the axe will fall on the younger employees, and his son in law has only got 2 years service.
It is a sad day for Derby, and all the peopled involved in the railway industry. Some government spokesman on Radio 4 this morning had the temerity to say that the companies supplying Bombardier would have to up their game and get work supplying other railway companies... PR**K
I despair :( :( :( >:(

Where were the protests when GEC Althom shut down UK operations?

"However, in a letter written to the government before it chose its preferred bidder, Bombardier had said that even if it had won the Thameslink work, it would still have had to lay off 1,200 workers in Derby as it adjusted to finishing other major contracts."

We carry out a lot of work on site at most of the Bombardier Sites in the UK and I can tell that they have spent a fortune updating the Derby Plant and putting in new processes ready for this contract after being assured there was no way it was going to Siemens.
All the staff have been officially given 90 days pending notice this morning and most staff are in disbelief!
I just cant believe that once again we give our work to overseas companies instead of supporting our own!! >:( >:( :'(

I'd rather have Siemens trains!
I'd rather live in a country that has late trains than one that doesn't even have the capability to build them. ;)

Only someone who does not use trains could say that ;D ;D
We have the capability to build them, but no very well it apparently. (well not any more!)

I think that Laying Off refers to contactors who would be re-employed when the Thameslink contract ramped up.

Reliability is not a build issue.....its a design issue, you design reliability in....
So clearly its design issues.
It has to be said though that the thames link specs were a little 'weird' so I suspect Bombardier would not have met the technical needs.
-
Siemens...... hand in hand with first group!!!! Thames link again i believe is a first group company.
class 185 dmu(i drive them) built and maintained by Siemens on behalf of First transpennine, i smell a rat dont you???
-
Now what you really want is a nice two car 108 set with (a DMCL + DMBS)....interestingly, they were built are Derby (1959)

You can have a play with mine once I have finished the body work.... a 108 though....

that would be great, will dig out my fg key lol

I've heard this today & once again UK's industry takes yet another hit. I don't have the knowledge of rolling stock that some of you do but this seems to be yet another example of our failing manufacture/export industry. In my job i see manufacturing firms go down when i meet a packing crew to export the now redundant machinery to South Africa only to see more & more industrial estates levelled & re emerging as yet another Retail park. Sickening.
How did it get like this in the first place? Where did we go wrong? :(

Simplified, but sounds about right to me, missing is the kick up the ar** to get young people into the few jobs there are.... :-X
I, indirectly, could find work for many young men, albeit part time, but could build up the hours to just about full time, experience can be developed in work, just need to be caring, crime / drug / serious alcohol / criminal record free, and a willingness to be flexible.......dream jobs for University students. Where are they, pay rates over minimum.....
I am talking about jobs that pay you to go and play.....
