Thinking of going this way as I want to get shot of Sky and save myself 52 quid a month. Just wandering what other peps veiws of the free sat tv are cpmpaired to the freeview box. :-/
-
I have freesat with the Humax FOXSAT HDR reciever/recorder and we are very pleased with it. Way better than freeview ever was. never had Sky so can't compare .. but there is plenty of rubbish for SWTSMBO to watch .. :)
-
We have free view at the caravan (Static) and free sat at home, much better quality signal and no pixelation, have noticed a couple of channel differences but nothing that bothers us.... :y
-
Cheers Entwood :y I have seen the package that Freesat offer but to me didnt look much different to the freeview package..... OR am I having a grey haired moment ;) ;D
To be honest Sky is a waste of money and I object to paying an extra £10:25 per month per bedroom plus 60 quid per box...... so its not going to happen through sky for sure ;) :)
-
The only thing that I miss is channel 301. All the motoGP qualifying and 125 and Moto2 racing goes out on 301.
If it is available on freesat I haven't found it yet :-/
-
recently got rid of Sky and went to Freesat with Humax PVR and 500gb disc. Saving huge amount - we were not watching the Sky stuff.
Reinvested a bit of savings in BT Infinity as opposed to Sky Broadband which has been great so far and 20 times the speed of Sky.

This is something I also wanted to do, so I rang up Sky to cancel... but a couple of days later they offered any package we wanted at half price for a year, so I grudgingly took it. I may still cancel yet though, I hate having to pay extra on top of my licence fee for mostly a load of shite :(
-
Whats the cost of this humax box then chaps :-? I have read that you can use your sky dish to run the freesat box off. Just wandering if sky and freesat signal are in tha same sort of direction. As Im stuffed if I need to move the dish as its shared with the neighbours and Im sure they wont be too happy if they lose their sky channels cus Ive moved the dish. ;) ;D

Correct.... :y I kicked out sky and went out and bought a free sat box, I think from Asda, was very little money and simply plugged it into my sky sat dish, tune in and he presto lots of shite..... :D :D :D

Spot on JC...I only keep it for the football but the amount of times Cov are on the telly I might aswell just go up there and watch it like it should be watched ;) ;D ;D Hence the thinking of telling em to poke it where the sun dont shine

Ah mate, the number of times I've sat in front of the telly scrolling through the channels to find something decent to watch and coming up with nothing, is nobody's business. Got to find a hobby.... :)

Anyone had any pitfalls in installing this system and what connectors did you use ( twist on or crimped)

We have a sat dish with the ability to provide 4 feeds, the Humax takes 2 so you can record channels whilst watching others, 1 feed goes to a very cheap sat reciever in the kitchen for SWTSMBO when she's being a domestic goddess :) and 1 feed is "spare" for when/if we decide to put a cheap box in the bedroom
-
Cheeap boxes all round here as Im suer they wont want to record too much or will they ::) :-? ::) ;D

You can get a Freesat box non record version for £50 or so. I paid £230 for the Humax 500gb.
Where you have existing internal cabling - the LNB out on the Humax (you have 2 LNB in as said by Entwood) can be used to take the Freesat signal to another location via decent coax type cable. This is an alternative to running separate feeds from the dish but is less flexible. You still need a Freesat box in each room but if the master unit is switched on the you are limited to channels with the same polarity (Horizontal or Vertical )as that to which the master Freesat box is tuned. When master box is off you have full range on slave box.
This works fine for us as the 2 boxes are never on at same time.
Best solution is as said by Entwood to cable other rooms direct from dish - I have probably suceeded in making this seem over complicated - I was just making the point that there is a work around of sorts which I am using as I had the pre exsiting internal wires..

Thank you all ........... Once payday is here I will be attempting to install the two bedroom ones and a 3rd one in the front room with Sky being told to sling ya hook ..... now what to do with that extra money we have every month spare ;) :)

I would have agreed with you E, back before analogue was switched off. Now it is off, the power transmitted on Freeview seems to have increased and now i get perfect picture , with 4 HD channels on the tv with a Freeview HD tuner built in :)

One of the easiest ways to get freesat is if you've had Sky installed in your home.
Because freesat uses the same dish and fleet of satellites, all you need to do is plug in one of our approved partner set-top boxes, and away you go, with over 150 TV and radio subscription-free channels.
freesat SD digital boxes start from £49, freesat HD digital boxes from £68 and freesat+ (allowing you to record, pause and rewind live TV) from £200. Click here to see the latest offers from our approved retailers.
freesat, a joint venture of the BBC and ITV plc, is now the fastest growing digital TV service in the UK, with 1.8 million customers who love free digital TV, free HD programming, with no contract and no subscription.
We do warn, though, that if you have a warranty agreement for your Sky dish (typically 12 months), then check the terms before you install any other equipment. Also remember that if you have any remaining contractual obligations with Sky, you'll still be bound fulfill them.
With freesat, there is no catch.

Just a thought...If you are losing channels by switching from freeview to freesat, then most tv's have a digital tuner anyway. So you could still use the freeview installed on your tv as well as your freesat box.
