I've just bought 2 x brand new Avon ZZ3 tyres for the back of my Elite - 225/55/R16 W
The fitter told me that they will only last between 7-11,000 miles at most, because they are low profile. That means I will have to replace them in 7 months!!!
I can't believe this, somehow.
In your experience, what life should I get out of these tyres, driving normally with correct alignment?
-
225/55/16 are not low profile! These idiots get worse. Driving normally I woulld expect anything from 15 to 18 thousand miles, maybe more.
-
Hi james, i run the same tyres as you elite, and it does depend on your style of driving. I have a set on the back and have done28000 miles and have 2.5mm left so expect to see 32.000miles.front tyres about 15-20,000 if your geomatory is bang on.I have pilot primacys all round and have a set of pirelli p7's to go on when needed. :) :y
-
although it was a lighter car with front wheel drive, i got 18,000 miles out of my nankangs on my corsa, and they were 17" low profiles
-
Just a quick one on tyres.
The first measurement, in your case James, 225, is the distance across the tread in mm.
The second measurement, 55, is the distance from the wheel rim to the tread expressed as a percentage of the tread width. So, 55% of 225 is 124mm.
The third measurement is, obviously, the diameter of the road wheel. (In inches, for some reason)
The lower the second measurement, the lower the profile.

Tyre life is also dependent on the quality of the tyre that you buy, with avon you should get resonable life from those.Buy budget= poor tyre life and grip in the wet stuff.

To a certain extent. Some of the Korean budget tyres are quite good. ;)

You wont see me risking my motor on budget rubber in the rain or any kind of weather , that our wonderfull land throws at us. :o

I've been really pleased with some budget tyres in the past :)
-
I've been through quite a few sets of Avons in the past (but not on an Omega) and they seem to be a good compromise. Reasonable grip and good lifetime. I think you'd have to be going some to kill a set in 7,000 miles :o
Was checking my tyres today and the Dunlop Sp2000 235/45/17s that I put on the front 7,000 miles ago are down to at least 6 mm all over. Tyres are about 8mm when new so there's a reasonable amount of life left in them yet :y
I know a few of the budget brands are good tyres but when they reel off the names of the tyres at the counter I can never remember what I've heard about them.. so I go for a brand I have heard of. Must do my research next time.

Got Goodyear Eagle Ventura's on the 2.2, where on it when i bought it 2 years ago.
Done 20k on them, and the fronts still have 8mm on them, rears have 6mm. Don't care what people say about the grip, i have taken the turn from the M40 to the M25 Clockwise at 90 in them, as far as i am concerned thats enough for me :y
Dad has Dunlop SP sports of some sort on his, they have lasted 50k, and 4 years.... and are still going!
Btw just had 2 x Dunlop SP300's fitted on the Senny, 205/65/15 @ £61 fitted a corner :y
-
Same size as mine - just replaced the rears today at around 15000 since buying and no idea how long they were on before I bought the car
-
40K+ Mitchelins.
-
40K+ Mitchelins.
I am on target for 40+K out of the Goodyears, thats if i do not sell the 2.2 ::)
-
i have been using Khomos on my miggy, people will run them down for being buget, but they are good value and offer excellent grip in the wet or dry, they don't make a lot of noise.........
I get about 15,000 miles out of mine, i have got through 2 sets in the last year, most of the 30,000 has been A roads or motorways....
i can get a complete set for £280 which i don't think is too bad
-
I drive mine on roads, unlike Tunnie's dad who only drives on carpet, and expect to see 20k+ from my 225/55/16 Pirelli P7's. ;)
I thinks they would only run out in 7k if you drove everywhere with the hand brake on :o

You know that the grip level on your 2.2 is not as good as it should be - you were in the car at the time ::)
Also, that corner can be taken much, much, much faster with decent rubber ::)
-
My Dunlop SP9000s were on for about 20k Fronts, 17k rears before something went horribly wrong with the geometry :'(
This mileage, obviously, was not pussy footing around.
Harder types may last longer, but I prefer the grip on the MV6...

Apart from that one time (the only time you drove it ;) ;D) i found the grip fine.... then again i do drive like someone twice my age, unless i am in the Senny ;)
Chopsdad... my dad only does motorway runs these days. He has been going to Birmingham airport every week for the last few years, there is only 3 roundabouts on the whole journey.... the tyres don't get used much ;)
I would take the 2.2 to the lakes too, but can't drive both :(

I have a set of Budget Ceat Tornado tyres, came on the alloys when I purchased them, well wearing but a load of shite as they are full of flat spots, had them checked out.
Over 70 mph its like being in a bone shaker. They now need changing, All four, looking to spend in excess of £700 for a good set of Michelins.

£700 on tyres is all well and good, but not when the car is only worth half of that to begin with ;)

Make that four times your age - I go fast and I am twice your age ;D

I now have a total aversion to cheap tyres, as they let go with no warning then do not grip again until it is time to go upside down :( :'(

:o£700 for a set of Michelins? search the web mate and you will get a set sent to you for about 120 each, add the cost of getting them fitted , less than 700. :o

That's still £500 for a set of rubber.... not feasable on say a £300 car.... ;D ;D

I have come unstuck before getting tyres off the web, not anymore, I will go to tyre dealers, any probs with them I can take them back to get sorted, any probs with ones off the web then its hassel.
Cheers for the note anyway.

Bearing in mind they are Michelin Pilot sport, 235 x 40 x 18, The exact price was £645 fitted, balanced etc, which I thought was good.

My Sunbeam cost me £100 so I suppose the £220 engine overhaul (engine cost me £40 but had lowish compression) was a waste as was the £100 rally cam, and tyres were £200 a set.
It is not the cost of the car, it is what the car is worth to you

Agreed for the most Martin,
I've spent more on the Elite than I did buying it, and you're right about what the car's worth to you...
My only real point was, it's necessary to be realistic on how much you spend on cars that don't have a lot of value...
-
A good set of tyres will see me right, I do a lot of towing and when the family are in the car I like to think we are safe in all weathers, so £700 to me is well worth it, even on a 52 facelift.
Happy caravanning

Cant argue with that my man! :y :y :y

I run mich pilot prem HP's and the last 3 sets of normal pilots last me in excess of 30k, and i love to hang the arse out. Size is 235/45/17's and paid 95 per corner, screwed em right down on the price. ;D

Have a look on here for tyre prices and makes :y

I had the ZV3 on mine on elit ewheels and they looked the same after 13K as when i bought them. But the car had full geometry setup and was running yellow bilsteins all around which meant perfect conditions for the tyres. Tyre life is dependant also on your driving style.

True when it comes to fixing, but I disagree when it comes to normal running/service costs, which I include tyres in....

Which is why Avon's were a good compromise ;)

Yup, Avons are still a premium tyre, though at the bottom end...

Cant fault Nankangs....great price, grip in the wet and last longer than most of my cars.
One set of nankangs out lasted four 2.0 Sierra"s. ;D
Had them on both the 3.0 and the 2.5 without any problems...most certainly my tyre of choice. :y
