Title: just had a right do with the wife
Post by: hercules on 15 July 2011, 18:20:03
a friend of hers has just got back from holiday in scotland and they hired a car for it,on the day of return the office had shut half hour early so they posted keys through letterbox and left, now theyre home and £830 has been taken out of theyre account for damages to the car.i tried to tell her that she should never have returned the car withiout dealing with a person to hand it back to and agreeing on the condition being the same as when they picked it up and signed copy of such to which she said but if they had gone back morning after they would of charged another days rent(no they wouldnt its not her fault they closed early)by now shes shouting at me saying you think you know everything and all im doing is giving my oppinion which having the fact i hire a van every year for work i know the procedure.
am i right or wrong guys cos from experiance you collect the vehicle and sign to agree on any damage and when you return it they check for any new damage and if non they sign again accepting the vehicle back :question

Could they go back and ask the company to detail exactly what damage occurred? £830 seems very steep  :o

im not sure what damage was as im not talking to the bitch anymore about it but yes £830 :o i would want to know what it was but i dont think shes a leg to stand on as she didnt hand the car back to anyone and anything could of happened between her posting the keys and the office opening again day after

Exactly so. I rented a car last week and did just that.

You can pay extra and take it back in any condition - its about £7 a day extra.

Some companies are worse than others - with Easy Car rental being really picky.

your right, should never of handed it back without being signed back in, condition wise. no legs to stand on, other then asking for a copy of the estimate for repair and pics of the damage.
they should of rang to say there was a problem 1st aswell, and have proof of the problem.

i used to drop vans back and post the key, but it was a company i used a lot

i think you are right BUT at work we use enterprise when ever our cars break down (being peugeot thats more often than not)they drop a car off for us at the main dealer and most of the time we are there to look arround the car..when our cars are ready to be picked up we load our cars up and ring our transport dept and they off hire the car...now enterprise have been know to leave the car for upto a week before collection..now i never have had a problem but we  do leave ourselves wide open as no one checks the car back in and in a car park who knows what damage can be caused???? :y

I would ask for a statement of damage and proof of repair. If they don't supply this, dispute the payment with CC company and report them to trading standards.

If a CC payment is disputed the payment is reclaimed from the company until it is resolved. The onus is on the company to resolve the issue, if they don't respond within (I think it is 3 months), the case is closed and you get your money back.

They do exploit anything they can - I hired a car through work and done less than 70 miles - I was too busy to re-fuel it back to full when I got back and estimated it would take about £15 to re-fill - the hire company charged me £114 to refill it  !!!

Darren.

Can i Ask what company this is? I have worked in several different companies in the past. you got a case in your hands! firstly they closed early (there fault) hence the car was left outside! secondly any damage noticed on the vehicle should be confirmed with the hirer (in there absence) before checking in. also would there be cctv where the vehicle was parked if so you can use that on your defence.  :y

also to belldarr: £115 that is disgusting, if anything should've been around £35-40 as they charge double, for someone going out and filling it up.

Also you mentioned there was a letterbox provided which shows they have out of hour returns policy, if they did go back the following morning would've been charged for another day.

I'm so pleased I have a good hire place nearby... Never get charged for extra days as they know I don't like returning out of hours and will frequently get a call to pick up the vehicle coming on hire up to 24 hours earlier than it's booked :o :o

Mind you, I only really use them for vans and mini-buses :y :y Although their rates are very reasonable for all vehicles :y :y

If it's a friend of your wife's then I suggest you back off and let it be.  Not your money.

Some people will never listen and there's absolutely no point in trying to change their minds.  Your wife's only getting angry on someone else's behalf, she won't live any longer taking on stress-by-proxy either.

I agree with you over the issue but would throw it overboard to have a quiet(er) life.

I'm with Chris, surely the answer here is .. the only answer to your wife is "Yes dear. You're right. That's terrible. Of course dear. No I agree dear." repeat until placated ;)

And everone should realise that if you accept a car from someone, or hand it back, then you MUST have their paperwork with a condition report.

And keep the copy.

No paperwork; no car. In either direction.
